draft at the brewpub

Served in a standard shaker pint, Thunder is an attractive deep orange-copper in color, capped with a thin head and low retention. First impressions are steeped unsweetened tea - presumably from the combination of leafy, earthy hops and ale yeast on a crisp, toasty malt base. Clean pale malts on the palate with a toasty grain depth and just a touch of caramel sweetness. A decent Cascade character of dried citrus rind and earthy spice. The body is a light-medium with a low-moderate carbonation. The best I had of the lineup so far - pleasant and easy drinking.

Thunder is very nice pale ale that is more like a session IPA. It's brewed with Galaxy hops and as a result has a nice piney and citrusy taste up front with a mild bitter finish. My pint(s) had a golden hue with a thin head and traces of lacing around the top of the glass. The smell was piney. The taste was very good. The mouth feel was good and well suited as a session beer.

On a side note this is a really fun nano to visit. The tap room and brewery are all in one space and they are actively brewing while you're grabbing a pint. They focus on producing only three or four beers at a time and produce beers brewed with fruit, herbs, or vegetables (hot peppers, cucumbers, etc...). At the time of my visit they were sold out of a peach and habanero ale. I would have been interested to try it.

I asked what hops were in this beer and the server directed me to Lee Rogan, one of the owners/brewers. He was very approachable and answered all my beer nerd questions. This is a worthwhile stop if you're road biking on the W&OD trail, or in the area.

On tap at the brewery; served in mini-mug as part of a flight. Clear copper-orange with a thin white head and some lacing. Aroma is toasted bread, fruity yeast esters, piney hops. Taste is caramel and toast sweetness followed by pine and vaguely citrus peel bitterness. Light body, thin texture, soft to average carbonation, slightly bitter finish.
