A dark wheat beer that tastes like a chocolate covered cherry…only better!

O'Fallon's Cherry Chocolate Ale was an interesting idea, but the follow through comes across kind of candyish and fake. Not that it doesn't work as a kind of dessert beer, but there are so many other beers in that vein that can work on their own as well, and this one just doesn't. The cocoa leaps out at you in the nose but it seems kind of false, or at the very least, like cheap chocolate. Or is that just because the cherry is right behind it, giving it the aroma of a half-bitten chocolate covered cherry. Well, if that's the intent, they've nailed it. But it's sugary and candyish. There's no richness to it. But maybe I was just hoping for more. How? I don't know. Perhaps a touch of vinous dark fruit might have helped... some subtle lactobacillus or Brettanomyces? Maybe some more dark malt from a bit of English brown malt. Maybe less cherry and cocoa flavoring. But I digress, as that train of thought is moot. The beer itself has a very good appearance, a rich and full aroma, and an interesting flavor. It's well-balanced and rounded beyond the stiff caricature of chocolate and cherry it presents. It's a decent niche beer. 'Nuff said. Probably still worth at least trying to see if you like it.

A really good beer that actually tastes as advertised. I wanted it to be thicker and darker but as Porter fan I had to remind myself this a wheat so I needed to rate it accordingly. Almost watery at first but then both the cherry and chocolate come in great at the end and linger afterwards...but not overly sweet at all. Definitely goes down easy. Think I drank about 6 ozs on my first swallow. As I finish this review I do kind of notice a lingering chemical-ish taste but I'll just take another sip (gulp) and wash that away for a few more moments

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This decent little brew pours a
medium brown color with a light head of white foam that settles to
a thick ring and light clumping pool. Nose of dark sweet chocolate
and cherries with cola notes. Flavors follow the nose with dark
chocolate and cherries with some subtle cream notes. Mouth
feel is a touch thin, light carbonation, medium light body, and a
lightly dry finish that is a hint tart from the cherries.
A decent desert brew for the style.
Cheers

Darker brown with this head that left practically nothing within a minute. Looks almost like cola. Strong maraschino cherry smell with chocolate-ish or Tootsie roll undertone. The flavor is similar. It's unusual to experience this kind of chocolate flavor in a beer that isn't actually a "dark" beer. It's not a complex flavor, but it's not bad. Really a lot like soda. Pretty sweet. The body is light and carbonation fairly high. It leaves a bit of a synthetic aftertaste.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a Coke soda fountain glass. Pours the color of dark caramel sauce, with a decent three-finger off-white head. The color belies the light body and mouthfeel of this wheat-based beer. The aromas and flavors are exactly as advertised on the label, and you can't fault it for that. Who doesn't like cherry Tootsie-Roll Pops? Quite tasty and drinkable, and a very good beer overall.
