Coming in for dinner on the second night in Asheville, NC, I saw this was rated high on BeerAdvocate, so thought we would check it out! Must have passed it twice before seeing it on the left hand side of the road, a couple blocks South from downtown. Great music coming from the street, there was no need to look at a menu.

We first started out at the bar, ordering a few beers but then the "Jazz Trio" (more like a Jazz Jam session) made us want a seat closer to the entertainment. Closed out at the bar and then sat closer to the front door and stage. Fun, music enthused crowd, we fit right in. The place was decorated with trophies (must have teams they sponsor) and tons of beer, obscure signs. Really felt inviting and cozy in here.

Quality was good. Could be cleaned up a bit but nothing wrong. The menu was a bit hard to read but the server was able to throw me in the right direction.

Both the bartender and the server were both great! Recommended their best in both the pizza and beer department. Always nice to be able to trust your server.

Had an extremely impressive tap line up. Enjoyed MANY of their beers and found myself tipsy. Good job Barley's! Luckily, everything is close in Asheville, so I didn't have to drive very far.

Enjoyed both the Garlic Knots and "Make-Your-Own" Calzone. The Garlic Knots could have been taken out of the oven a bit sooner (a bit burned) but the Calzone made up for it! Unreal. We added Pepperoni and Andouille Sausage to the already garlic, herbed, and multi cheesed Calzone.

With all of the pizza offered in Asheville, we took a break from the pie and the calzone made up for it! Try to come on a night they have music because the jazz was awesome the night we came. Another easy spot to get to from downtown, don't be afraid to explore!

Just north of Wicked Weed on the opposite side of Biltmore Ave a very old building with Hardwood floors thru-out a beautiful ceiling and staircase that leads to another level pizza by the slice or pie with whatever toppings you want and loads of pub fare food, they have around 40 taps with emphasis on local brews they offer flights and have a great regional tap list this is a must stop both for food and brew if you are downtown nice service with tasty foods and tap list

We tried to get into Wicked Weed but the line running outside put us off so went back up the hill and street to Barley's. Admittedly, it was Saturday night on Memorial Day. The first floor of Barley's was packed and we were directed to the bar upstairs which was great because there was just a few people there playing pool. The beer selection was good and the bartender knew his stuff

This was a pretty decent place, even if my impression of it was pretty mixed. There's a lot of space to work with here, with a good-sized bar and lots of table space downstairs for a more family-restaurant-with-a-bar feel, and a more game-room atmosphere and secondary bar upstairs. Seems like it could get rowdy during events, but I visited during a decent down-time hour, albeit unknowingly during Asheville Beer Week.

The beer selection was great, with a wide variety on tap, including many local options that you can't get outside the region. There was also a decent bottle selection, if the draught lineup isn't good enough for you for whatever reason.

The bartenders were a pretty on the ball for the most part. One that served us was pretty knowledgeable in the local beer scene, while another was a bit standoffish, and acted like she hated her job. Oh well, anyone can have a bad day I suppose.

My biggest gripe here was my food debacle. I figured I'd get something simple to go with my last beer, and though they seem to specialize in pizza, that was a little too big at the time. So I went with wings. Seemed simple enough. The bartender then told me they cook their wings a "special way" or something like that. Fair enough, I'll try some "special" wings. Well, apparently the definition of "special wings" in this case was "45 minutes to cook 'em wings." Seriously...it took 45 minutes at least for these wings to get made. They weren't that busy or anything, it really took this long. So as I finished my last beer and kept looking at my watch, the bartender came by every 5 minutes or so to tell me that they were "comin' right up." doo doo doo .... Ok, well, anyway, they finally came, and expecting the best darn 45-minutes wings in the world, I was instead greeted with the sorriest excuse for wings I've ever had in my life. So after one or two, I got the rest boxed up, and honestly I don't even remember if I finished them later. Anyway, that's the wing story.

The take-home message here is: this is a really great place to go if you want to sample a good number of local beers in one place. And it seems like they get some good events during Beer Week. Service may be hit or miss, though I can't make a full judgement on that, not being a regular. And if you're going for food, I'd just say, don't get the wings. x_x
