Finally made a stop by Barley's after a wonderful day knocking about Asheville. For a description of the place, Slander's review is pretty spot on. The short version is: this place won't blow your socks off but is solid in every respect.
We arrived on a Thursday night to a packed house around 7, and immediately went upstairs with our beer to get out of the noise. 3 beers and a mead later, the crowd had thinned out and a band started covering Bob Marley. (Note: If you don't like Bob Marley, Asheville is not the town for you.)
Upstairs boasted some 20 beers on draft, darts, pool tables, and a horde of (I assume) retired taps along the ceiling. The local beer selection was good, with multiple offerings from Highland, Foothills, Pisgah, Duck Rabbit and Catawba being featured prominently. Some other notable draft beers were Weihenstephaner Hefe, Bigfoot, and Redstone Black Raspberry mead (delectable.) Nary a Bud or Coors in sight! I would venture a guess that some 50 beers were on tap total and another 60 or so in bottles. I spotted Delirium Tremens, Lindemans, Sam Smith, Chimay, and some Victory in bottles. A well-written beer menu gives the price per pint / bottle / pitcher for the beers along with a good description and alcohol content. The beers were reasonably priced; most were $3.50 a pint.
The service was reasonably fast and friendly. I had a pint from the bottom of the keg and brought it to my servers attention, and it was promptly substituted. My friends and I shared an "All American" pizza, which was hot, fresh, and quite ample. Overall the food seemed to be a notch above your usual pub fare.
I quite enjoyed Barley's and will return next time I'm in town. This is a great place to take your family if you happen to be passing through; but for a more pub-like atmosphere, try Jack of the Wood.

Just north of Wicked Weed on the opposite side of Biltmore Ave a very old building with Hardwood floors thru-out a beautiful ceiling and staircase that leads to another level pizza by the slice or pie with whatever toppings you want and loads of pub fare food, they have around 40 taps with emphasis on local brews they offer flights and have a great regional tap list this is a must stop both for food and brew if you are downtown nice service with tasty foods and tap list

We tried to get into Wicked Weed but the line running outside put us off so went back up the hill and street to Barley's. Admittedly, it was Saturday night on Memorial Day. The first floor of Barley's was packed and we were directed to the bar upstairs which was great because there was just a few people there playing pool. The beer selection was good and the bartender knew his stuff
