We went to Barley's Taproom after reading a couple of reviews on BA. They have a nice environment that is basically a big downstairs section and an upstairs section with pool, games, and smoking.
We never tried the food although it looked reasonable priced. They had a nice beer selection that included most of the standards as well as *several* of the local brews including beers from the Highlands brewery and Pisgah beers.
Unfortunately for us, wee arrived about 10 minuets before the live music set started. The music was not bad (basically a three man band with mostly amplified acoustic instruments) but we were really more interested in talking and the music made that very difficult. Again, its not that the music was bad, and it was at a normal time (maybe 8:00 pm), but we just weren't in the mood that night.
All in all, Barley's is a good place to go if you are looking for some reasonable food and a long beer list in the middle of downtown Asheville.

Just north of Wicked Weed on the opposite side of Biltmore Ave a very old building with Hardwood floors thru-out a beautiful ceiling and staircase that leads to another level pizza by the slice or pie with whatever toppings you want and loads of pub fare food, they have around 40 taps with emphasis on local brews they offer flights and have a great regional tap list this is a must stop both for food and brew if you are downtown nice service with tasty foods and tap list

We tried to get into Wicked Weed but the line running outside put us off so went back up the hill and street to Barley's. Admittedly, it was Saturday night on Memorial Day. The first floor of Barley's was packed and we were directed to the bar upstairs which was great because there was just a few people there playing pool. The beer selection was good and the bartender knew his stuff
