Aged for over 12 weeks in the choicest 15 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon Barrels you can find. Bourbon Barrel Three Chopt Tripel is not overpowering. It’s sophisticated. Notes of citrus, lemon-lime, honey and coconut are rounded out with the smooth flavor of Kentucky Bourbon. Surprisingly easy to drink at 11.3% ABV and does not have a “hot” flavor.

A strong emphasis on citrus notes in a tripel, in the vein of Orval and other brighter Belgians. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but well executed and balanced.

L: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had an amber color and a hazy consistency. There was a thin amount of foamy head that lasted an average amount of time. Below average lacing.

S: A fair aroma of bourbon, Belgian style yeast, light fruit, and some honey.

T: Tasted of a little bit of Belgian yeast (not as much as expected), a tinge of honey, some citrus fruit (lemon), a bit of bourbon (again, not as much as expected), and coconut. An uneven flavor for the most part, in that it doesn't seem to push its ingredients far enough. Not bad, but needs a push.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This beer has its good qualities, but it's not entirely successful. Worth a try, though.

An excellent version of the style. I think this compares very favorably with Curieux. The bourbon barrel is evident, but not overpowering. Wil definitely seek out again.

Another stellar VA Craft brew. Pours a hazy burnt orange color with a slight white head that quickly goes away but leaves lacing on the sides of the glass. Notes of vanilla, caramel and citrus on the nose. Upon tasting, you get the caramel, vanilla, toffee and the glorious bourbon. Goes down real smooth.

Look: Hazy burnt orange with an average white head. Moderate activity.
Smell: Sticky sweet malt, honey, toffee, light floral, mild bourbon, oaky, with a sweet vanilla. Finish os notes of hay and big fruity Belgian yeast.
Taste: Toffee, figs, dates, caramelized raisins, fruity Belgian yeast, lemon zest, bright citrus cuts into the sweet malt, honey, huge vanilla, bourbon, and a spot on oak. Mild booze with a surprisingly spicy hop finish.
Feel: Amazingly light given the ABV. Drinks sweet but medium bodied. Booze is apparent on the back of the throat with a pleasant warmth. Mild carbonation fitting the style.
Overall: A wild ride of complex flavors. It doesn't quite come together cohesively as the Tripel and bourbon don't meld seamlessly but it's tasty and quite a fun puzzle to crack

Shared 750 ml bottle. Revisited in December 2016.
A slightly funky tripel with enough barrel aging to have about as much impact as the base beer. Lots of yeast and bourbon notes. Very sweet aroma.

Recommended.

Pours a nice rust with a frothy tan head. Decent lacing.

Nose is big on vanilla and oak - the bourbon isn't so much forward.

Flavor profile is solid - vanilla, oak, molasses, hops and toffee. Really nice.

Feel is a bit more brash/bitter/biting than I'd expect with the barrel hopefully mellowing that out a touch more but not in any way bad or off. Just not quite as much to my liking.

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

Honey colored pour, cloudy, with a one finger head and some soapy cling. Smell brings Belgian yeast, light malt, some bourbon and oak, caramel, a little apple. Taste gives up more malt and bourbon than the nose, yeast, vanilla, caramel, some oak. Light hop bitterness throughout. Very smooth for the ABV, well carbonated, maybe a bit too light bodied.

Solid effort, the bourbon integrates well with the style and doesn't overwhelm. The lighter body makes it seem a little thin, but this is certainly worth a purchase.

750mL bottle from ThatCracker (thanks!). Bottle #1003, no bottling date. Served in a Wicked Weed snifter.

Pours a bright, opaque, golden orange with a finger and a half white head. A surface haze remains behind, along with a healthy halo. A single broad curtain and ancillary dashes of lace decorate the glass.

Aromas of limey citrus, honey, banana, bourbon and a little caramel. Nice.

Flavors of honey, oak, key lime, bourbon, toffee, pear, vague soft spice and a little subtle alcohol. The play between yeast, hops and barrel works much better than I expected. This is delicious.

Creamy, medium full feel with gentle carbonation. Aftertaste combines honey, soft oaky bourbon and vague semitropical fruit.

Lickinghole Creek has masterfully blended styles to create a unique and worthy beer. We can call Three Chopt Tripel a barrel aged, hopped up American tripel and would even while correct we'd be missing the point that this defies succinct description. Whatever you choose to call it this is one you should check out if you can.
