Bottle:
Pours essentially black with a foamy mocha head. Gossamer surface head and medium ring sustain, and there is spotty lacing.

Initial smells were actually of light roasted malt and lemon, oddly, but the beer was also too cold. Warmth does being an odd and seemingly off scent incorporated into a chocolatey malt predominant smell. Maybe that's the "lemon" I got initially, but it turns into a little tangy funk. Other notes include fresh cut wood, and eventually a little coffee. Perhaps it's a more perfume-aroma coffee that I'm not used to that might explain my impressions.

Taste doesn't have the oddness of the nose. It's a more straightforward char-leaning stout. It could be a very bitter coffee that I am getting, which is yet another piece of the puzzle to this enigma (to me) of a beer. Bitter chocolate is also noted, along with woody notes and a light citrus-like tang to accent.

A little oily, even though the tastes have me expecting a more ashy feel. Carbonation is medium prickly and mildly lively on the tongue.

Not a bad overall bitter stout, but with a citrus-like or green wood bitterness that I'm not used to in my coffee stouts. Just missing my preferred profile in this one, though with decent warming time, this is a fairly nice regular stout.

Appearance: Black bodied beer with a very thick fluffy khaki head. Great retention and lacing. It looks absolutely perfect.

Aroma: The bottle says it contains both coffee and chocolate but I'm not picking up any of that. It has a bit of an acrid burnt aroma along with what smells like linen. There is an incense-like smell to it as well that I can't quite place.

Taste: A bitter alcoholic punch to the face. There is a bit of cocoa in the aftertaste but not much chocolate character overall. It does remind me a bit of very dark chocolate but it doesn't taste any more like chocolate than a regular imperial stout. I don't pick up any coffee at all. There is quite a bit of charcoal flavor to this beer.

Mouthfeel: The beer has a lot of charcoal-like bitterness and married with the alcohol it makes it an awkward beer to drink. The mouthfeel is very smooth which is nice. The carbonation is just right.

Overall: This is nowhere near a beer I would recommend as a coffee chocolate imperial stout. The flavor and aromas are just not there. For an imperial stout I would say it is average. Nothing in this beer elevates it and quite frankly I am disappointed in it.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass:

A: Pours dark with a medium head of latte cream color and spotty lacing.

S: Dark chocolate aromas accompanied by a faint smell of fruity coffee.

T: Heavy Bitter chocolate, bitterness intensified by the strong hop profile of the stout. Coffee comes in late and strong. Sweet creamy alcohol flavors throughout.

M: Medium carbonation. A bit thin for the the size of the beer (13.5% abv) for my taste.

Overall, this is a very solid stout. I wish it had a bit more body to it to carry the alcohol, but the flavors are nice and complimentary throughout. I also thoroughly enjoy hoppier stouts, which Lickinghole tends to make and at 60 IBU I think the hops go well with the bitter coffee and chocolate flavors of the beer.

750ml bottle poured into an Adroit Theory tulip. Labeled as 13.5%, 60 IBUs, 1.101 OG. Popped the top on the bottle and let it rest while I fixed a drink for the lady. About a minute later I noticed that it was slowly foaming over. Put it in the sink to do its thing, and it foamed for several minutes, however the volume loss was minimal. Finally poured into the glass as a midnight black, mocha headed delight. Smell was light on coffee and heavy on chocolate. Taste was the same: bitter dark chocolate, light coffee, residual bitterness. Mouthfeel was light for an imperial stout of that strength, I would like a bit more viscosity (the lady agreed). Overall it was a nice treat, save for the foam over I had to clean.
