Poured from a 750 into a snifter, the beer is a very dark brown, almost black, opaque and deep, with legs of small carbonation streams on the glass feeding a low profile, cream colored head. Aromas of rich maple syrup, heavily roasted hazelnut, subtle cream, and boozy notes. Very rich aromas. Flavors are heavily roasted and richly sweet forward, with a subtle char lead into the richly sweet and sugary maple candy profile, with solid boozy overtones, rich vanilla highlights, and solid hazelnut sweetness. Very balanced, with a solid blend of rich, sweet characteristics. The roast and char notes do a good job to rough up all of the smooth and sweet characteristics. The body is bold, big, and chewy, with a smooth, slick overall coating, softening the underlying boozy kick. The aftertaste is like maple candy, with a solid dose of bourbon, of course. Some of the charred barrel still lingers on in the aftertaste, as well. The finish is smooth, slow, layered, and creamy. Very good beer.

I don't see any bottle date on the label.
Appearance: The body is black; completely opaque. The head is short with tight large bubbles and it is a light khaki color. It doesn't retain a full head but it maintains a good sized ring with an island. There are some small spots of lacing.
Aroma: It has a big woody aroma. It smells just like a barrel. There isn't any alcohol aroma which is really good for a 10% ABV beer. The label says this is made with maple syrup but there is no aroma of this in the beer.
Taste: It has a very mellow and well blended flavor profile. There is a bitter chocolate flavor with a hint of wood character and watered down bourbon. There is a bit of a nutty character to the beer which is also nice. Again there is no maple flavor in this but the beer is still outstanding.
Mouthfeel: It is fantastically smooth and easy to drink. The carbonation is perfect. It is full bodied and finishes off without any heat and just a touch of bitterness.
Overall: Down to the brass tacks; the beer didn't smell or taste like maple and I am pretty disappointed at that. It would be like eating pancakes and pouring invisible syrup over the top. For this reason I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for maple syrup flavors. This beer does have a wonderful bitter chocolate, light bourbon, and wood character that is blended together and mellowed out enough to drink without any impediment. If I could get this as a bourbon chocolate brown ale I might buy it again but I won't be upsold on a beer that touts maple syrup and doesn't deliver.

Had higher expectations for this one. Prefer the base bourbon barrel brown, Fearnought. Fingers crossed a dash of cinnamon in the French toast variant comes through
