Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: MikalMick on 02-01-2014

By combining the rustic, peppery flavors of our farmhouse yeast strain with the complex dark fruit notes of roasted wheat and dark Belgian candi syrups, we’ve created an intricately delicate “Black Saison” that contains ornate notes of raisins, dark grape, and peppercorns.

From a growler I had filled today at the brewery.

A deep ruby/amber in color with a short light brown head.

Banana and spicy aroma. Very nice.

Classic Belgian flavor: Complex and earthy and spicy, with bread flavors to boot. Excellent.

Hefty body.

Overall a very nice Belgian-style ale from St. Petersburg. Green Bench is new, but they can brew.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big red grape, plum, fig, pear, apple, pepper, brown sugar, toasted bread, light roast/nuttiness, herbal, grass, light oak, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and compelxity of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big red grape, plum, fig, pear, apple, pepper, brown sugar, toasted bread, light roast/nuttiness, herbal, grass, light oak, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Moderate amount of peppery yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of red grape, plum, fig, pear, apple, brown sugar, toasted bread, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice dark saison style. All around great compelxity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

On tap at Green Bench for Foeder for Thought. Foeder #3. Pours a copper color with great lacing, thin light tan head, thin collar. Aroma is funky red wine, grassy-earthy. Taste is much like the nose but with some caramel sweetness too. Fuller body than the Saison de Banc Vert, and some more carbonation as well.

Green Bench "St. Peter's Saison De Banc Noir"
16.9 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating
$7.95 @ Outlet Liquors, Rehoboth Beach, DE

Appearance: Clearly filtered, there's no sediment, but it has a haze to it. Dark mahogany body beneath a short head of creamy off-white/very light tan.

Aroma: Spicy over fruity and lightly sweetish caramel malt with a hint of oak.

Flavor: Wider, but no bolder than the aroma suggest. Black pepper. Red and dark fruits. Oak. Generally dry, but even more so given the woody dryness and spice... perhaps a bit too much so in the overall picture as there's not enough going on around it, but also never out of balance.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a dexrinous edge and a very fine bubbled, bristling carbonation. The carbonation could be slightly higher, but is certainly within specifications, and probably best suited to the peppery spiciness and oaky dryness present.

Overall: Techically proficient, but but somehow lacking a certain something that would brighten it and round it out - most likely more yeasty fruitiness. Still, quite an enjoyable sipper.

Malty spice, some bananas and really dry, almost tastes oxidized.

A: The beer is clear dark reddish brown in color (dark brown when viewed from afar) and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down, leaving lots of specks of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Belgian yeast are present in the nose along with hints of peppercorns.
T: The taste has flavors of Belgian yeast and green peppercorns (not that spicy) along with notes of dark fruits such as Concord grapes. The grapes become stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting black saison that has quite an amount of complexity in the taste.
