By combining the rustic, peppery flavors of our farmhouse yeast strain with the complex dark fruit notes of roasted wheat and dark Belgian candi syrups, we’ve created an intricately delicate “Black Saison” that contains ornate notes of raisins, dark grape, and peppercorns.

Look: It pours amber with an off white head. There is plenty of head and some belgian lace.
Smell: It has earthy aromas with pepper. There are some vinous qualities in the nose with some grape and dark fruits.
Taste: The flavors has a strong plum element with some raisins and wine elements. There is also a moderate pepper and spicy note. There are background notes of grape and some tartness.
Feel: It has a moderate body that is slightly syrupy. It has a tart and long lasting aftertaste with wine throughout the palate.
Overall, this is a flavorful saison with dark fruits and earthy flavors leading the way and plenty of over flavors mixed in.

500ml bottle. No apparent dating on the bottle. Appearance: Hazy brownish copper, with a nice thick, fluff off white head that lingers. Aroma: Spicy, peppery, earthy saison yeast notes. A touch of raisin, but has a nice typical saison aroma. Taste: Surprisingly light maltiness with only a touch of dark fruit. Strong spiciness with some black pepper and a slight toasted oak. Very dry. Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a moderately high carbonation. Finish: Very dry with a strong saison yeast spice that bites long after the swallow. Overall: Very light and highly spicy and peppery saison. Maltiness a bit light which accentuates the spicy and peppery yeast. Could be a little more balanced, but a nice rustic saison

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is hazy chestnut brown that's more orangey-amber when backlit, with a big (3-finger) foamy ecru-colored head. Head lingers quite awhile.
S: First impression: root beer or cream soda. Definitely on the sweet side, with some brown sugar noted, over cinnamon and overripe apples. Molasses too.
T: First impression is more about the overly-fizzy feel than the taste. As for the taste, well, I'm not impressed. A bit tart, though not sour, with some spice (definitely peppery - too much so) and a touch of bread or toast. Finishes with a drying woody-ness and some minerality. After the palate adjusts, I bump the score up a notch.
M: Way too fizzy, and a bit thin in heft.
O: Doesn't drink like a Saison, really. More like some sort of dark Belgian Ale, I suppose.

500ml pours to a tulip glass dark brownish-red, off-white head. A big plum/date/red grape presence, vinous for sure. Definitely on the sweeter side overall with candi sugar and molasses notes, starts to approximate Welch's grape juice as it warms a bit. A bit earthy with touches of tobacco, apple, toasted bread. A tiny bit of spice. Decent amount of complexity but really lacking when it comes to Belgian yeast/spice/saison+oak barrel qualities. Pretty hefty mouthfeel that feels bigger than 6%, quite smooth with understated carbonation for the style. Pretty tasty but comes across as a 8% dubbel or BSDA rather than a 6% saison. Would've been nice to see more of a balance between the noir and the saison, and more earthy+yeasty qualities to help balance out the dark fruit sweetness.

Pours a clear darker orange almost coppery color with off-white head. Oak, dark fruits, little funk, and some tartness on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with oak and dark fruits, little tartness sneaks in.

Flight sized pour at the tap room
Light reddish-brown color. Beige head that lasts all day.
Smells yeasty and like sour dark fruit.
Tastes about the same. A little bit of black pepper like spice. Tart, but not overly sour. Red grapes and candied sugar with a funky/eartht yeast base.
Not as carbonated as some of the others.
I liked this one more than the Vert myself.

.5 L bottle poured into a tulip.
A- Dark reddish-brown with some ruby highlight. Head is tan and towering/rocky. Retention is great.
S- Belgian yeast is up front. Dark fruit, and vinous, and oaky.
T- Very oaky/woody, vinous and some dark fruit notes.
M- Body is surprisingly light, and despite the beautiful towering head, carbonation is lacking. Dry finish is really woody, sawdusty.
O- There is too much presence of wood in this one, or there isn't enough depth in the beer to hold up to the wood-aging.
