Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: PorterLambic on 03-09-2014

Peter Demens, a noble Russian aristocrat, brought the first train to St. Petersburg via the Orange Belt Railway on June 8, 1888 carrying eight empty freight cars and one passenger. Naming our city after his beloved birthplace, St. Petersburg, Russia, Demens is remembered through our daring and aggressive IPA that is dark, yet assertively hoppy.

Poured on draft into an Irish pint glass.

A: Pours a dark amber to brown. Not even dark brown. Black IPA? Tan head that settles and thins but maintains and laces well.

S: Piney hops with some resin and the barest hint of citrusy hoppiness.

T: Alternate notes of malty, toasted bread crust bitterness and hop notes battle it out awkwardly while some malty bitterness settle on the palate. After drinking the entire beer I couldn't quite get the flavors to settle down and work together. The result was an unbalanced beer.

M: The body is a little thin, the battle for bitterness lends a little astringency as you drink. The carbs are there but do little to improve the overall mouthfeel.

O: Pretty underwhelming, unfortunately. Thin body, odd bitterness, not an attractive beer. I've had much better from Green Bench.

On tap at the brewery. Part of a flight. Taste and looks like an amber or red ale. Not what I was expecting for a Black Ipa. Great brewery fun place to visit.
