Their selection is good and they keep about 90% of their beer refrigerated which helps prevent stale beer. They also have a wonderful little cheese shop where you can get a baguette and some epoisses to go with your beer.

Ive ordered from France 44 numerous times over the years and have had a great experience every time. Their beers are fresh, priced well, and they have a great selection.

What finally prompted me to post a review though is the customer service. My GF got me a gift card for Xmas as she knew I ordered several times a year. After getting the card, I came to realize they can only be used in person. I live in Indiana and unfortunately dont plan on getting up to MN anytime soon, so I emailed Carin and she said I could call in my order anytime using the gift card. I greatly appreciated that. She was great with communication and I had fresh Abrasive two days after ordering.

This place has my highest recommendation and I will continue to order as often as my wallet allows.

This an online review only. Carin and the online sales people are really first rate, great customer service, sane pricing, shipping is reasonable with no hidden markups and such, handling fees etc. I buy from them a few times a year and will continue to do so, they show what a caring business who has quality products can do. I highly recommend them.

ABSOLUTELY HANDS DOWN OF THE BEST BEER STORES THERE ARE! WILL HELP YOU WITH ANY QUESTION AND NOT ACT LIKE THEY KNOW SO MUCH MORE THAN YOU (EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW MORE THAN MOST OF US BEER LOVERES) Karen is extremely helpful and is great with any thing to do with the shipping. I would recommend them to anyone who is wanting to order beer online and receive it without a single problem, there charge for wrapping is minimal, compared to how much they use so that is a huge plus! Go with France44 you will not be upset or disappointed one bit.

I ordered a 4-pack of Abrasive and Furious online late Thursday. I live in California, so I was okay with shipping rates to try these two high quality beers. What I didn't expect was service that went beyond my expectations. Based on my experience with other online beer purchases, I expected my package to be shipped sometime the following week. No, it was shipped the very next day on
Friday!! And, I received the beers four business days later.

I received my shipment today, and I am thrilled. Both Abrasive and Furious are really fresh.

I will not hesitate to order from France 44 again, if they carry beers that I can't easily get my hands on in California.

Very happy customer.

First off - this place is in Edina not Minneapolis so whoever created this place at first is wrong.

I love this place. One of the best bottle shops in the Twin Cities for beer. The staff is extremely friendly, like crazy nice and spend time with you and are completely unpretentious, and they have a nice selection. They get all of the rare releases and are always in the rare group of stores in the Twin Cities to get the really amazing beers first before anyone else. You can order beer and liquor and they will call you when it's in. This is a great place. I know Edina typically has a fairly stuck-up reputation but this is a very good store and I highly recommend stopping in.

If the score drops low on this one its only because I rated the appearance average, since this was an online purchase.

I put in an order on Saturday for a six pack of Two Hearted, 4 pack of Surly Furious and a bottle of Collage.

Order came Thursday, shipping was fair and probably only slightly more than it actually cost them to ship this.

Box was packed very well, my six pack of Two Hearted turned into a six pack of Deschute's Inversion. I am now elated that this happened because I would've never tried Inversion otherwise living in Maryland. It was excellent but either way, I messaged Carin who handles their online orders and she told me to enjoy the Inversion and shipped me out a six pack of Two Hearted free of charge that'll be here Tuesday. Great service.

I'm incredibly happy to have found this store because I can now get myself Bells/Founders/Deschutes AND SURLY beers whenever I want from the comfort of my home.

Bonus points? Yes. The Surly 4 pack I got was canned on 5/29/2012

A clean, spacious store with an ajoining cheese shop/deli that may be worth checking out in forthcoming visits. All the beer is kept in the cooler and most of the domestic craft located in a walk-in cooler. Not exactly the best enviroment to look around but you know the beer has been stored correctly. Not the most extensive selection as it is surpassed by many stores in the metro. Did not see any employees helping customers but they were friendly and helpful at checkout. Prices are at or just barely above the cities prices. Good store for the neighborhood, but not really a destination store.

I just ordered 2 Mikkeller Weasel Calvados and 1 Mikkeller Black Buffalo from France 44's online shop. I had an easy time navigating through the site. Once I placed the order they were very good about emailing me progress and it arrived in 3 days, which is pretty fast since I live in Maryland. The shipping was pretty reasonable and the prices of the beers were the cheapest for any online sourrce I could find. Overall my experience was excellent and I will definately be shopping at France 44 online again!

I've only had experience with France 44 by placing orders online on their website. This is a fantastic online shop for getting brands I can't get in my area, like Bell's, Surly and Deschutes. I placed an order and everything got here a week later, beautifully packaged to make sure that everything gets here safely and intact. Everything's very fresh, too.

The price is perhaps a bit high with shipping, but that's to be expected, and in fact they're much more reasonable with shipping costs than most other online shops I've seen.

Online ordering isn't something I'll do too often, but now I've found a great shop for when I want these brands that don't normally get distributed to my area.

This review is based on my experiences ordering beer from France 44's website.

This was my first time ordering anything from the internet. It was their selection that made me finally bite. To my knowledge this is the only place you can order Surly online. I personally ordered a 4-pack each of Wet, Furious and Cynic Ale. They basically carry every Surly selection that's available. In addition to that they have Odell, Deschutes, Boulevard and few others that I can't get in Michigan.

I'll tie the service and quality into one here. I placed my order on Halloween which was a Monday. The promptly had my order shipped the next day and I received it on Friday, November 4th. You can't really ask for any better than that with ground shipping. Here's what secured me as a repeat customer. As I said I received the package on 11/4. My 4-pack of Surly Wet was canned the day I placed the order. I can't even get Bell's that fresh! In addition to this the Furious and Cynic Ale were less than a month old.

Their prices seemed to be very reasonable to me. A couple things here and there were maybe a dollar or two more expensive then I would expect but this is balanced out by their shipping costs. There is basically no mark up on the shipping, no packaging/handling costs either. I would not hesitate to place another order with France 44.

A- A big, fairly spacious place. Coolers of beer in back right, with a fairly large portion of the beer in a walk in cooler.
Q- All the beer except the mix a six beers are in coolers. This is a bit more of a wine store than a beer one, but there seems to be a good amount of care dedicate to beer.
Ser- Friendly, quick, knowledgable.
Sel- Selection is a step behind Four Firkins or Zipp's but still pretty solid. American bomber selection is strong. A pretty strong quantity of regional beers.
Prices on bombers are quite reasonable. The rest of their selection is average or a dollar above.

Online only review. I have placed several online orders and have never had an issue. Great selection - most often I'm ordering some combination of Surly, Deschutes, and Odell, but they also have a lot of other midwest brewers. Offerings aren't just the standards either - they had Surly 5 available for a while, Surly Wet, Deschutes Stoic, etc...

Customer service is the real standout though. On my last order they mistakenly had a 12-pack listed online that wasn't in stock. Instead of just removing this from my order as I've had other stores do, they agreed to send it to me with free shipping when it actually came in.

Prices and shipping costs are both very reasonable.

I've ordered just off of their online store, so this is going to reflect that. The site is organized very well, and they have a ton of beer I cannot get in PA (Surly, Goose Island, Deschutes, etc). Prices are about standard for the product...paid 8.49 for a sixer of Black Butte, 16.99 for Surly Wet, 8.99 for Surly Cynic, 19.99 for Surly Five...nothing egregious. Customer service is great, with multiple emails sent on the status of my order from both France44 and UPS. On my most recent order, I actually got an extra bottle with a sticker that said "this one's on us" on it....really cool. Shipping costs are very reasonable....22 bucks for eight cans and ten bottles seems fine, with everything enclosed in a bottle shipper with brown paper in abundance in the box. Another order I got from them featured my order wrapped in a ton of bubble wrap with packing peanuts in the box. Excellent web shop, would recommend.

I've only used their online website and haven't been to the actual store....yet.

The way the web store is laid out, it is really easy to use and nothing is really hidden or hard to find. The search options and other navigation is right there in plain site.

I really like how you can request products and they actually do work to try to find said products. It's nice when a bottle shop cares for it's customers enough to stock or get in what they want.

The customer service is A+ all the way. They are helpful, understanding, honest and actually serve the purpose. Especially when dealing with people over the internet or web stores, or even on the phone, it almost seems like you're bothering them. At France 44 it's not the case. They really take care of you.

The priciness comes in mainly with the shipping. Most of the stuff I get from F44 is stuff that I can't get here in Chicago and I understand beer prices, but enough of it stacked up can help dilute shipping, but it's kind of a killer when only ordering one thing (especially when there is 1 pack limit per customer and that's all you're there for.) Nonetheless it's shipping, and flat rates are going to be killers regardless.

I've used France 44's online site twice now and will definitely be returning many times in the future.

Living in Delaware, my experience with France 44 has been solely on their online site over the last few months.

I have placed 3 orders with them, and all have gone smoothly. Great communication with Bill and Carin in the orders/shipment department with quick follow ups via email about my packages.

IPAs ordered late in the week were held to avoided "warehousing" in the summer months over the weekend at UPS (their shipper), which I greatly apprciated. Tracking information was sent once the packages were on their way.

Plus, I got an update about new releases that I had requested which was very helpful.

Two thumbs up! Cheers!

A= A very impressive look to this store. Clean and well organized but really focussed on wine.

Q= If you love wine, this is a meca. Beer category is improving but still not at the level of some of the more well known beer stores.

S= A nice fellow named Bill helped me to find several new beers to try. He was most helpful.

S= An increased selection of specialty beer over the past two years that I’ve shopped there. Nice improvement.

F= N/A

V= A little higher on some things but overall not too bad.

I had my experience with France 44 through their online ordering system and had 6 bottles of Sheaf Stout sent to me.

First off, the transaction went very smoothly and I'm now chilling one of the bottles to enjoy later. Great communication and quick to ship my order makes points with me.

I see some beers on their website seem a bit pricey but if I am hankering for some beers from Surly, I now know where to go.

I had, like I said, a very good experience and I'll be shopping with France 44 again.

I try to stop in here every once in a while. It is a great store from the standpoint of how nice it looks on the inside and they actually carry quite a nice selection of beers. All of the beers for the most part are kept refrigerated in coolers. Extensive selection of Belgians, domestics, German and other randoms. They must recently put in a selection for singles too.

Although their wine selection is still some of the best around for odd one offs both that and their beer is pretty spendy. Generally at least two to three dollars more per bottle than many other places around.

While Four Firkins is nearly in my back yard, I find myself heading to France44 more and more often. One, because they still manage to have the beers Firkins ran out of only moments after they came in the door. Two, the selection of COLD micros is pretty extensive and if your looking to be sucking down that Deschutes any time in the next couple of hours it is a convenience that is not found may places. Three, very helpful staff. They may not know what your talking about but they sure as hell will find you the answer, which in the past has meant putting me in direct contact with their distributor.
There are cheaper place, there are places with better selection, overall France44 offers a very well-rounded beer experience in one of the best wine stores in the metro.

***Recently their prices have been edging upwards, making it no longer a good value based on selection.***

Stopped in a few weeks back and picked up some Founders Imperial Stout. I decided to go back again on 3/5. There is a pretty nice selection of beers, but wine is their specialty. Most of their beers are in doors, or inside a walk-in cooler.

The selection is not extraordinary, and some of the harder to find beers are overpriced, so if you stop in, keep that in mind. The build your own 6 pack selection was pretty sparse on both of my visits, and did not include much, if anything, from the more popular breweries. Overall, a nice store, and I am glad I had a chance to stop in.

France 44 Wine & Spirits has become my stand by beer store since I moved to Minneapolis, because it is the closest store to my place that has a good selection. They are a wine store first and foremost, and I find myself browsing their wine selection more so than their beer selection. However, they do still carry more than just the commonly found craft beers, and all but the make your own six pack section are kept in the cooler. I have found the service to be really good when I am looking around the wine area, and nonexistent when I'm in the cooler looking at the beer. The young guy who is usually at the register, however, seems to know some about beer, and has commented intelligently on the beers I've been purchasing a number of times. All the service I have received has been friendly and knowledgeable. The beer prices seem to be on par with what you'll find at most other stores in Minneapolis. The wine prices are a few dollars more per bottle than at other stores, but they do carry a lot of wines I haven't seen elsewhere. So I'll forgive them for that. Overall, this is a destination store for wine. For beer, however, it is a nice store to shop at if you are in the area, but nothing to go out of your way for.

Nice store down towards 50th and France area.
I like it. Yes, it is more expensive than other places but they get all the limited releases that sell out fast at other stores. The staff is friendly and will hold bottles for you if you ask nicely. Nice walk in cooler of beer along with a many cooler doors of beer. They also do singles and BYO 6 packs. The only really knock on this is the overall value as prices tend to be a little higher. If you're hungry they have a small deli on the other side where you can grab some food.

The prices are competitive and the selection is impressive. It's not Four Firkins, but if you like your beer (wine and spirits) you're definitely going to find something. They have a walk-in cooler with a craft beer selection larger than some stores entire beer collection and they sell tons of singles and .750s.

They also have a nice mix-and-match where you can pick 6 bottles from a variety of 12oz beers for $10. I haven't seen that elsewhere.

I found the staff pleasant and, depending on who you talk to, quite helpful. Some of the more senior staff do like their beer and acted as a beer thesaurus for me.

This is my preferred liquor store while at home.

Photo of kbaker91
3.9/5  rDev -10.1%

France 44, for several years when I lived in the neighborhood, was my go-to liquor store. Now it is about halfway between where I work and where I live, so I probably visit the store about 5 or 6 times a year.

The building itself is large, mainly housing the liquor store but also a neat little deli as well. The building is new, built about 9 years ago on the site of the old store location. The main focus of France 44 is on the extensive wine section. Tastings and classes devoted to wine are numerous at this store.

The beer section is towards the back, with a large walk-in cooler as well as regular cooler shelving next to it. The walk-in area has the majority of the foreign & domestic macros, as well as a fairly well-stocked selection of craft 6-&-12 packs. The shelving outside of the walk-in house a decent selection of craft bombers and 750s. A smaller area of singles can be found in the aisle between the coolers and the registers.

I have never had reason to ask for help from the employees here, but have never had a poor experience with the staff.

Prices are a little more expensive than your average liquor store that sells craft beer. It is about what you would expect for this area of town.

Overall, France 44 is a great looking wine store, with a better than average beer selection. The main reason that I visit this store these days is that when local breweries release seasonals, France 44 is sure to have them in stock. That cannot be said about many of the other 'well known' Beerfly beer stores in the Twin Cities, where stock seems to vanish immediately. Worth a visit if you are in SW Minneapolis/Edina.
