Dave Fafara, Roastmaster at Shenandoah Joe, right across the street from Three Notch’d came up with a special three roast coffee blend just for this beer. The coffee beans are cold infused allowing the fresh flavor and aroma to dominate without the acidity.

All of this is backed by a rich and hearty oatmeal stout with a great semi-sweet-baking-chocolate-like sweetness.

10 oz pour at the Charlottesville location. Pours pitch black with a medium tan head. Aroma and flavor feature huge notes of fresh-roasted coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, dark roasted malt, and a touch of earthy hops. Coffee is the star here, and despite being up front and center it's not out of balance. Delicious.

12 oz bottle poured into glass

Jet black, with thin tan head that fades. Big dark espresso roasty aroma. Similar coffee heavy flavor, but not too dry or bitter. Enough dark malt flavor to work nicely. Medium bodied.

Poured from a bottle, a couple fingers of tan head. Very deep brown color and smells exactly like a cup of coffee. Extreme coffee flavor all the way through, with no other flavors really coming through. Great coffee stout if you basically want a cup of coffee in beer form, but too much for my taste (I'm not a coffee drinker, just like *some* coffee flavor).

Dark pour, no visible head. GREAT smell of fresh coffee bean, best smelling coffee ale I've had. The strong coffee scent really only comes through in the taste very lightly though. Overall a very good stout, would try and again and recommend.

There is a bottle date on the lower right-side: "BOTTLED ON, 03/08/18"

Appearance: It has a black body with a medium-sized light khaki head. It has moderate retention and spotty lacing.

Aroma: It smells strongly of coffee when near the glass. It has a nice coffeehouse aroma that smells like both coffee that is brewing and coffee grounds. It smells like coffee in the classical sense and doesn't have any pepper character.

Taste: There is a clear coffee flavor to the beer and it is sure to appeal to coffee drinkers. The coffee flavor in this beer is better than the flavor that most coffee shops that I have had. There is a light bit of charred carbon flavor in the background. There isn't any real independent presence of the base-beer to this beer, so either it has been overwhelmed by the coffee or it has integrated seamlessly. Either way the beer tastes outstanding.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium-full body which relies heavily on the roasted flavor to deliver apparent weight to the beer. Carbonation seems right and it has just a light stickiness at the end.

Overall: Taste and aroma are the heavy hitters for this beer. As a coffee beer it works wonderfully well and I would both recommend it and drink it again. If you aren't in to coffee then the beer doesn't have much to offer you in the way of a standard stout.

On tap at the Harrisonburg brewery taproom
Pours with an opaque black body that is topped by a good beige head that leaves some sticky lacing on the glass.
The moderately strong aroma is dominated by fresh roast coffee notes.
The flavor has plenty of coffee as well as hints of dark bread. Mild bitterness.
Medium-light carbonation and a smooth, medium body.

Pours pitch black with a 3 1/2 finger tan head that recedes slowly leaving great lacing.

Rich coffee aroma with hints of chocolate.

Taste of burnt roast malts,, tart coffee and bitter chocolate.

Medium bodied and rather light for a stout, but creamy from the oatmeal. Light sticky syrup becoming drying in the end.

This beer was only "okay" at the start, but it grew on me. Rich and smooth, it became more well rounded as it warmed. I'd definitely try it again.

Poured a black body with good tan head that stuck around for a bit with an aroma of not so heavy roasted coffee malts with minimal sweetness. Easy drinking beer w/ a lactic/milky smoothness and slight vanilla sweetness balancing with light coffee notes and dry, easy finish.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was a quarter inch of creamy, tan-colored head that lasted an average amount of time. Somewhat sparse lacing.

S: A pretty good lacing of espresso, roasted malt, and some chocolate.

T: Tasted of a fair amount of roasted malt, a bit of espresso (could have been more), light bittersweet chocolate, a definite lactose presence, and an oaty quality as well. Like a lot of beers, this one doesn't quite push its advertised ingredients far enough. Not terrible, but could have been stronger.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a mostly smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is an uneven beer for the most part. It has its good attributes, but isn't a home run.
