12oz can poured into a snifter. The brew pours with a polished clarity and a silky rich khaki cap that fades to a thin film leaving stringy lace on the glass.

The smell is like footy pils grain with a bready sweet nose and a hint of butter. Plenty of herbal hoppiness is also present like classic simcoe notes that are catty. Strange how much the nose on this is focused on malt instead of hops. Very atypical for an IPA.

The flavor has a very strong maltiness like footy pilsner grain, slight buttery diacetyl and then catty simcoe hops that are slightly fruity/floral. There is an upfront sweetness and fresh bready grain character that fades to the bitterness of the hops. Its not a terrible tasting beer, just stylistically in the wrong ball park.

This is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A strangely fresh and inviting grain character with perhaps too much malt focus for what I prefer in an ipa. At times, it almost feels like the yeast quit working or didnt fully attenuate the brew. Im really not sure whats going on here but something seems off in all 3 cans I tried of this.

Serve on-tap in a branded imperial nonic pint glass at Three Notch'd Brewing Company (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Clear amber hue with controlled 1-finger off-white, light beige head with good retention and nice lace collars down the glass.

S: Bright grapefruit and orange citrus and floral hops aromas meet a pretty strong honeysuckle, herbal, earthy quality. Overall, it is very obvious that we are dealing with fresh from the tank hoppy beer here -- it has that slightly shooty quality of freshly made, highly hopped IPA. Any malt aromas are background with a light grain and mild caramel character. No yeast or alcohol component.

T: The flavors follows pretty closely from the aromas with a super-fresh hops bite with slightly herbal, grassy notes up front but then tempered with more grapefruit, orange, and lemony qualities. The maltiness has a mellow crackery quality to it with minimal caramel sweetness. The yeast and alcohol do not figure into the flavor. Moderately bitter overall impression. A clean, fresh, and hoppy American IPA with excellent hops flavor and complexity.

M: Light-medium body with pretty even to slightly higher than needed carbonation. Medium dry finish.

O: I enjoyed this IPA for its fresh and crisp qualities. I would love to see a bit more tropical fruit character in the beer, but overall, I really enjoyed this brew and have to hand it to the TN crew for putting out a stellar IPA to anchor its lineup.
