This delicious stout recipe won a Bronze medal at the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Cup! It is a rich and hearty oatmeal stout with a flavor of semi-sweet baking chocolate. This is the base to our beloved Espresso Stout before the addition of coffee.

$ 2.75/10 oz draft at Beer Run, Charlottesville, VA
Aroma of roasted malt
Head gone, thanks to the bartender – all we got is a 2 mm ring
Lacing none
Body dark brown, opaque
Flavor of roasted malt, slight bitter chocolate; no hops, no alcohol, nodiacetyl
Palate medium, slightly creamy, lively carbonation.

Drinking local and I really love a good oatmeal stout. Unfortunately, this wasn’t it. It lacked the silky smoothness of an oatmeal stout – just not up to snuff.

On tap in a shaker pint, the beer is jet black, oily thick, with a thin layer of clingy, tan head. Aromas of subtle toasted grains, hints of coffee, and subtle chocolate. Very muted nose. Flavors are heavily roasted and bittersweet, with solid notes of chocolate, sasparilla, vanilla, and tangy cream, all on a toasted grain backbone. Smooth, light body, with a roasted and bittersweet aftertaste. Smooth, soft, slow finish, with a bittersweet linger.

Just had it last night on tap at Capital Alehouse in Richmond. It was my first of the night so my sensibilities were still intact. You could only see through a small portion of the glass it was so dark. The head was a good inch and a half. Aroma was grainy and malty. Taste was exquisite. I've had a few beers from three notch'd and I had several stouts that night, but McGoats stood out from the crowd. Heavy malt and hearty oat flavor with a semi-sweetness that's not too much.
