This delicious stout recipe won a Bronze medal at the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Cup! It is a rich and hearty oatmeal stout with a flavor of semi-sweet baking chocolate. This is the base to our beloved Espresso Stout before the addition of coffee.

Had a pint of this along with a steakhouse burger at CB in Carrytown, RVA. Went well with the burger. Very drinkable stout.

Part of a flight at the brewery in Charlotte NC. Pours a deep brown - almost black - color with a hefty tan head. Initial impression is roasted malts and unsweetened chocolate. Mouthfeel is too light. Finish is smooth and bitter. Drinkable but not compelling.

Growler into a Spiegelau stout glass. It's a deep brown bordering on black. It has a big pillowy medium tan head with great retention. The aroma is fairly rich, with a grainy sweetness and a little bit of booze. The taste is much the same. Neither are very complex but it is good. The body is lighter but not thin, mostly smooth with just a hint of carbonation.

On tap in a shaker pint, the beer is jet black, oily thick, with a thin layer of clingy, tan head. Aromas of subtle toasted grains, hints of coffee, and subtle chocolate. Very muted nose. Flavors are heavily roasted and bittersweet, with solid notes of chocolate, sasparilla, vanilla, and tangy cream, all on a toasted grain backbone. Smooth, light body, with a roasted and bittersweet aftertaste. Smooth, soft, slow finish, with a bittersweet linger.

Really Rather liked this beer. I got it as a replacement for a lesser stout someone dumped on me at a biergarten. Was quite pleasantly surprised. Rich bodied stout, good head, dark color, good bitter and yeasty notes.
Decent stout, a new favorite.
