The Local has been open a few months now, and is settling into it's groove. The local is owned by the same folks who own Menace Brewing up in Ferntucky. They try to have at least 1 beer from all 7 local breweries (Boundary Bay, Chuckanut, Kulshan, North Fork, Wander, Menace, and Aslan) on tap at all times, but 1 or 2 may be missing at a given time. They also rotate through various other regional (WA-OR) brews.
They've done a good job with a basically rectangular room, pleasant colors, photos of the breweries, and a wood & black pipe motif. My biggest complaint is with the full size front windows that are completely uncovered (although, that is pretty common around here). I'd like to see some lace or shears to help break up the visuals a bit.
The quality of the brews is usually pretty good, and it's not the bars fault when a brewery sends a clunker through. The staff does a good job of keeping a variety of styles on tap, and they usually have 2 taps dedicated to ciders.
The food is very, very good, but does tend to run to the "small plate" size servings.I tend to be a heartier eater. ;) The prices are fairly typical, compared to other places trying a similar menu.
Overall, a very welcome and pleasant addition to Bellinghams beer scene, The Local is surely worth your time when visit the City of Subdued Excitement.
