Notes/Commercial Description:
A toast lager with notes of chocolate and coffee. Unlike a heavy porter or a stout it’s amazingly light, crispy, and sessionable. KCCO Black is a delicious misfit.

Brewed & Bottled by Redhook Ale Brewery.

I'm a fan of the Chive and my dad really wanted to try this so I picked up a six pack.

A - Nice black color with a white head. Very similar to Guinness.

S - Roasty smell with some coffee/malt and some lager yeast tones.

T - A subtle mixture of roasted malt and lager taste. No real hops to this beer just the dark malt flavors that come through. The characteristic lager flavor is also present but isn't as predominant as a Budweiser. Reminds me of a Guinness with the lager taste added to it and the sour/acrid flavor removed. The bitterness from the roasted malt compliments the sweetness of the malt to make this beer a good example of a traditional Schwartz beer.

M - Light mouth-feel with not much aftertaste. The bitterness and light body make this beer finish crisp allowing you to drink more. Moderate carbonation making it come alive on your tongue.

Overall, it was a nice beer if you want to try a darker beer but not be laden down with the bitterness of a traditional stout. Like I said it is a little like Guinness but is definitely drinkable on a warm summer day. It isn't the best Schwartz beer I've had but I would recommend it to those who are the typical light lager drinker that wants to appreciate beer for taste rather than getting drunk.

The bottle says it was brewed by Red Hook Brewery for Resignation Brewery, using a Resignation recipe. Pours a fairly dense brown color with plenty of reddish highlights coming through. Light tan head, frothy, with a good size on a hard pour. Head retention is good. Thick bands of lacing on the glass.

Aromas is fairly good: roasted malt is featured but there is a little coffee and some bitterness. Flavor is similar to smell. Surprisingly hoppy.

Mouthfeel is a little light but crisp and nicely carbonated.

Overall a pretty decent lager.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a cola brown color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a tiny level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is biggest of a roasted malt smell with it also being mixed with some coffee aromas and a tiny bit of cocoa. Along with these smells are some caramel and a little bit of a yeasty smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet darker fruit flavor of plum and cherry mixed with a milk chocolate and molasses sweetness as well. A roasted malt flavor is present right from the start with it remaining throughout the taste and with the sweeter flavors creating a base flavor for the brew. As the taste advances from the start, a little bit of a nutty flavor and some yeasty flavors come to the tongue. Around the middle of the taste a coffee flavor comes to the tongue with it growing more intense at the end of the taste, leaving a somewhat subdued but sweet and roasted flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is medium in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation that is average as well. The middle of the road carbonation and body give a decent balance for upholding the darker and sweeter flavors of the brew all while still maintaining a somewhat crisper and easier drinking feel for a black lager of 5.1 %.

Overall – A decent schwarzbier overall. And while a bit on the sweeter side it is rather drinkable with a decent bland of roasted flavors to match the sweet.
