Berkshire Oktoberfest

Bomber into nonic pint

Dark amber color with a finger of slightly off white head. Looks very inviting. Very little lacing.

Smells are a lot of malt and spice with some fruit tossed in. Seems sweeter than I was expecting.

Taste is much sweeter and dryer than I thought I’d get. Lots of fruit and spices. Apple, pear, sour cherry(?), caramel or something dark & sugary…quite a few things competing in here. It honestly reminds me of the profile on some Belgian ales I’ve had. It feels strange to make that comparison but this beer seems to be tracing the same line. There is a sourness/bitterness in here that counteracts the sweet note but it still comes off as cloying to me. The flavors even out somewhat with the beer getting warmer as I finish the first half of the bomber but I’m having a hard time getting past that initial impression.

Rather dry and tart on the tongue for me but have to say it goes down pretty easy. No trace of the alcohol save for maybe a touch of warming in the gut.

Unfortunately the flavor is just not to my liking. After one serving I really have very little desire to drink any more. This is the first Berkshire brew I’ve ever felt that way about. It would probably be worth looking for another Marzen to see if it’s more to do with the style that doesn’t click for me rather than just this one beer.

From the 22 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on September 20, 2012.

Poured into a tall German stein. It has a decent looking medium amber, copper-orange tone with a significant, long lasting fluffy head and slow moving carbonation.

The nose is full of traditional Oktoberfest aromas including sweet caramel malts, yeast, toffee, and biscuit.

The body is creamy and smooth and falls into just under the medium range.

The taste starts out sweet and malty like a good Oktoberfest/Marzen should but then an unexpected earthy bitterness flies in from out of left field and takes it all over. That bitterness lingers. Overall, the beer is quite drinkable.

Great beer fresh easy to drink octoberfest. Look forward to it every year. Poured my first one of the year and just as good as last year. The people at berkshire really take pride in there brewing process and it shows with every great beer. I would take this over than almost any other German Octoberfest. Nothing like kicking back on a cool night pouring one these into a pint glass and watching football. GREAT BREW!

No date on the label or bottle but I'm assuming this is fresh because it's early September!

A: Copper-amber in color with a fizzy, off-white head. No lace or retention. Don't know if that's typical of the style.

S: Malt-heavy. Roasted, sweet, sugary, bready.

T: Great balance of sweet and roasted malt. Hops show up in the finish and are surprisingly fresh, tasty, and oily. The malt really shines through, providing a delicious depth of malt flavors. Perfect for cooler weather and let me say, the booze really sneaks up on you after finishing the bomber.

M: Very enjoyable flavors, right amount of carbonation, and easy to drink. As the bottle suggests, the flavors and hops are "just enough to entice you to have another." For the price, I definitely will consider it.

O: This beer met my expectations as they were pretty high when I purchased it. A very good beer by itself and for the style. I'd recommended it to anyone.

A-Pours a shiny copper color. Head is foamy and off-white. Head is smaller and it retains its thin stature. Inconsistent lacing rings. Body is mostly clear.

S-Sturdy Marzen nose with a slight Pumpkin Ale twist to it (spices are the culprit). Hops are herbal and quite light. Lots of rich, sweet toast. A ton of caramel too. Almost buttery. A bit of booze.

T-A robust Marzen flavor too.Autumn spices and toasted nuts. Biscuit and toast. Sweet, lightly burnt caramel. Light grassy hops. A bit of alcohol. Cola notes too. A really nice overall flavor for the style.

M-Heavier bodied for the style. Light, tingly carbonation. A bit too brash with the alcohol, but I'll take it.

O/D-One of the best Marzens I have run across. Actually, this one probably is my favorite. Berkshire has some great brews. Happy to have tried it. The style is weak, but this one is a star.

Bottle poured into nonic pint.

A: Beautiful amber, dark copper color. Lots of active carbonation. Fluffy off white head leaves nice lacing and retains very well.

S: Lots of toasty malt, sweet carmel, buttery. Hops are earthy and herbal.

T: Lots of toasted malt, sugary sweeet caramel, bready, biscuity malts, hops are slightly bitter and more herbal and earthy. Its a bit to sweet for me however

M: Medium, smooth carbonation slight alcohol warmth on throat. Very bodied for the style.

O: Solid, strong octo-brew from BBC. Wasn;t really big on the sweetness however, but still an alright beer. Watch out for the abv though, It'll sneek up on ya.

22oz bottler served in a SA "perfect pint" glass.

pours a clear, deep amber / copper shade while yielding a beautiful 2" creamy head. very strong retention and some patches of lacing. just a real nice looking beer. rich, toasted maltiness leads the way in the nose, followed by some secondary hoppy and caramel notes.

flavor follows, even exceeds the aroma. bold toasted malt, caramel, and a touch of hops in the background. very nice. medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation.

overall, a great octoberfest. not quite sensational, but one of the better ones i've come across - a fantastic local brew.
