On tap at the squealing pig in Boston.
Poured into a pint glass. Not quite jet black but a very dark brown in color. Thin head struggles to maintain itself but the carbonation holds the head. Thin lace eventually forms that slowly disappears.
Smell: Cold iced coffee mixed in with roasted malts. Very slight hop aroma but it is quite surpressed. The nose makes me think: "you are about to drink cold coffee"
Taste: Initial front end taste screams out with harsh astringent notes of bitter roasted malts and coarse coffee grinds. The coffee is very apparent and off-putting, however, the brew redeems itself in the backend by following with chocolate and cocoa blending nicely with a toasted malt profile. Just when that first bite off the coffee aspect hits - really does not meld well for me. I often think this part is the hardest to nail when integrating coffee in beer. The body is a bit thin for my tatses as well but the carbonation is lively.
Overall: Good to try once but thats about it.

1 PT. 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a snifter
A - This beer is very dark. When held to the light only a faint ruby glow is perceptible. It is topped with a couple inches of tan head. There is a little lacing.
S - I smell some coffee, but it is not strong at all. There really isn't much else.
T - I get a some coffee and roasted malt. There is a mildly bitter finish.
M - Medium with low carbonation.
O - Full disclosure: this beer has two things working against it. This is my second beer of the evening. The first was a Peruvian Morning with huge coffee smell and taste. This beer lacks compared but still has its own merits. Second, this bottle was purchased in Massachusetts about ten months ago. I may have held on to it for too long. It is decent but not as good as the score indicates. i will revisit given the opportunity for a fresher bottle and a cleaner palate.
