Stopped here on my European Beer-cation. As someone mentioned before, the essence of this place is a classy, clean bar with ample seating and a knowledgeable bartender. Once we asked about the house and local beers he opened right up and was discussing how American microbrew culture has come to Amsterdam and he had us tasting many selections. The menu is very expansive and I felt very unusual in that I was not familiar with the all Dutch names. I'm a noob again! I wish I spent more time here and also went to the sister location - BeerTemple. Well, I do know I will be back in Amsterdam - I'd like to learn more about their own scene as well as a little of the language itself.

This bar is 100% Dutch beer. And it’s amazing. We hung out here multiple times during our short stay. The bartenders we met were wonderful people. One of them remembered my partner from his visit a few months earlier.
One gripe I had (and don't let this detract you at all from coming here): slow service. I’m an impatient American, so sometimes I’m overly picky about service that is actually not slow. However, waiting a half hour to be able to get the bartender's attention, finally being able to tell him what I want, and then after 10 more minutes of him not pouring the single beer I ordered, we left. This was on a relatively slow Monday night, but there was only one bartender and he couldn’t handle the crowd. It was an isolated incident, though, and normally the service is fine (it was definitely satisfactory every other time we were there). I walked to Beer Temple, so I guess they got my money anyways. Oh well. They’re nice people.

I got the chance to celebrate Zwanze day in Amsterdam this year. Having spent afternoons, and nights in the Beertemple I decided to change it up and hit their sister bar, Arendsnest with a friend. This was a brilliant decision. Arendsnest overlooks one of Amsterdam's canals off a quiet street about a 15 minute walk from the Beertemple. The beer selection is primarily Dutch craft beer with some Danish brews mixed in for kicks. The atmosphere is laid back, the bar is beautifully appointed and light. A complete 180 from the decor of the Temple. The bartenders are friendly, prompt, and very helpful. If you ever happen to find yourself in Amsterdam, this is a MUST for any beer lover.

Every time I visit Amsterdam, I make sure I visit The Heron's Nest. They strive to carry every Dutch beer, and their vintage list is terrific. I've been a few times and the service and selection have been consistently terrific. I had a vintage bottle of a strange Dutch beer called Kasparus Patrix here after another patron said he drank too many of them the previous night and missed his flight home. Obviously I had to try it, and I loved it. I can't think of another bar in The Netherlands that would even have such a beer...well worth the trip.
