A: Pours almost completely pitch black with a big dense yet bubbly chocolate milk-colored head. Fades slowly, quite good retention. Heavy ring persists at all times. Pretty good fluffy tendrils of lacing all around too.

S: Woo, this one is boozy. Lots of grain alcohol. Some raisin and caramel mixed in there. Hints of cocoa to boot.

T: Loads and loads of chocolate. Very chocolatey from the very start, through the middle and into the finish. Up front there is a bit of raisin and molasses mixed in with it - especially as it warms. In the middle there is some sweet caramel that makes for a really nice decadent combination. Finally in the finish there is a bit of earthiness and a little more raisin. But I cannot overstate it enough, this is pure chocolate, through and through. Not as boozy as the aroma makes you think, but still a little hot.

M: Not nearly as thick or full as you might think for 13%. It's actually quite good that it's not heavy because given how sweet it is, I think it would make it super cloying.

O: Well, if you like chocolate, make it a point to pick this one up. It might even be more chocolate than Charleville Box Of Chocolate or a Southern Tier Choklat or a Rogue Double Chocolate. It's like drinking watered down hershey's syrup with some booze thrown in. The little bit of typical BSDA raisin in there gives it a nice chocolate-covered raisin taste. Even given the massive chocolate flavor and relative simplicity I will say that I really enjoyed this one. I do love chocolate in my beers so I am biased - I will admit that freely. This is one sweet, chocolatey dessert beer for sure, tread lightly!

2012

Rich, almost regal brown color sported a thick and full head of dense foam.

The nose is sweet and strong. Dark fruits like prune and date, mix with caramel, fudge, chocolate, molasses and crab apples.

The flavors are rich and savory with a front of roasted coffee, caramel, toffee and brownie. The middle is a blast of chocolate before it ends with maple, dark fruits and green apples.

The feel is downright amazing. It's velvety smooth and perfectly thick. It's 13 pct and there's no evidence of such.

One of the biggest surprises I've had in the world of craft beer and one I'd urge everyone to try.

Shared at a private tasting, thanks to beerchitect! 2012 vintage, I believe.

Pours an opaque dark brown, bordering on black, with a frothy tan head that dissipated to a light ring of foam. While the aroma revealed pleasant notes of plum, raisins, and dates, the flavor truly shined. This beer was incredibly complex and seamlessly blended rummy dark fruit with toasted malt nuttiness. Simultaneously, there was an upfront flavor reminiscent of caramel corn, with buttery, toffee-like caramel accenting the nutty, popcorn-like backbone. Excellent beer, though some may be put off by the buttery tones. Very smooth and drinkable, for such high abv.

2013 bottle, 750ml split 3 ways.

A - Dark brown color, just a bit of clarity. Beige head becomes swirly cap and ring pretty quickly and retains as such.

S - Raisin, caramel, alcohol, yeasty and bready tones. Decent but kinda generic flavors for a BSDA, really boozy.

T - Wow, al-kee-hawl. Drinks like it's somewhere in the 18% range. Flavors are a little better than the smell - big dark fruit caramel bomb with some chocolate, pepper, yeast, spices, red wine, but unfortunately the booze really detracts here.

M - Slick but kinda thin-feeling mouthfeel, lowish carbonation. Sweet and hot.

O - Ehhhh. So boozy, and what's underneath all that seems decent at best. Honestly, all in all, a little painful to drink.
