Appearance: Pours a very deep brown - almost black - into my Unibroue tulip. The relatively rough pour produces a fine tan one-finger head that dissipates fairly quickly.

Smell: Wow... there's no question this is a big one The booze in the nose hits you almost as soon as you open the bottle and cloaks just about everything else in the nose. Initially hidden inside, but becoming more apparent as it warms, is a huge sugary sweetness and notes of stone fruits, together with Belgian yeast spiciness.

Taste: In some ways this is almost like a port. The sweetness persists in the mouth, and expands to be almost chocolatey. However, they somehow managed to cram enough hops into this balance out the sweetness - not completely, but enough to make it all work together. Finally, there's something almost herbal lurking around the edges, perhaps from the yeast. Obviously, there is a lot going on here.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is middle of the road despite the smallish head. A touch more wouldn't be unwelcome given the massive sweetness, but that approach might not be consistent with all the complexities going on here. On reconsideration, good as is.

Drinkability: In terms of taste, it's surprisingly drinkable. The massive ABV, though, gets right on top of you (which may have something to do with the fact that it's taken me about an hour to write this). Better not try to take on a 750 of this without a wingman.

Thanks to bmann1113vr for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a dark brown to almost black color with an off-white head. The aroma is heavy on the chocolate and alcohol. There is also a little bit of dark fruit, but what stands out the most is the very hot alcohol.

The flavor is more of the same. I get some roasted malt and chocolate, as well as a lot of alcohol. The beer is fairly sweet and there is some nice dark fruit notes in the flavor.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Poured into a 12oz snifter from a 750mL bottle.

A- Black all the way through. no light. very very bottom of snifter glass has a small dark brown glow in the in light. solid full finger, light brown head that lasts 3-5 minutes after pour.

S - Chocolatey, clean, maybe a raison/fig. ALCOHOL.

T- Chocolate, coffe, carmel, fig. alcohol really comes through. 13ABVs are not well hidden

M - burns a bit from the alcohol. high viscosity.

O - not a top choice for strong Belgian dark ale. This needs more aging. Dont know the bottle date. Would not buy this again unless knowingly aged.

Not sure it looks like the style, more closely resembles a stout or porter, but I like dark beers and this is right up my alley. Pours like coffee. A bit thick, it's completely black. The head is about a finger of brown bubbles. Retention is somewhat lacking.

A couple things stood out. It almost smells sweet, if that makes sense. Wheat is present, as well as some candied sugar. A slight cola-like caramel scent as well.

Tastes like a combination of hot chocolate and a soft drink. Caramel and sugar dominates, but it's not offensive or cloying.

Early on, the sweetness is ok but I have a feeling after another 20ish ounces I'm going to think differently. It's got a creamy mouthfeel that combines with the sweetness leaving a bit of a sticky finish. Deep in the swallow some of the hops and alcohol show up, but the alcohol is well hidden for being 13% ABV.

I was actually scared of this being so high in alcohol, but it's very drinkable and overall, I would like to drink this in the future. Some people are going to find it too sweet, but overall, it's a good choice.

Poured a deep dark brown with a thin dark tan head that quickly dissipated.

The smell is deep and full with a sweet dark fruit quality, along with hints of chocolate and molasses.

The Flavor is very sweet and malty up front with a big blasted of toasted caramel malts and alcohol. Dark cherry and raison really seem to dominate along with deep dark bready flavors and the alcohol there are a bit of hops in the finish leaving a touch of medicinal bitterness, but still way out of balance even for this style.

The mouthfeel is fairly thick and syrupy.

Overall its drinkable and nothing really off other than the balance, but a bit average.

Out of a 750ml foiled, caged, and corked bottle. Pours a deep brown color which showed some chocolate brown highlights when held up to a light. The tan head was small, yet dense and settled into a solid ring and sparse cap.

The aroma has a big raisin flavor with some red grape juice and a touch of carob. The aroma is quite sweet, with a big toffee presence, and has an olde ale character to it.

The taste is of raisins, prunes, and toffee with some brown sugar. There is some carob to offset the sweetness. Some rum alcohol notes pop through in the end. The taste is quite sweet and boozy.

The feel is moderate with very fizzy carbonation. The beer probably would have been quite slick if not for the carbonation. The ABV is quite noticable and provides some belly burn. The beer borders and passes on being cloying sweet. It is hard to drink a glass of it.

The beer is a big BSDA but the flavor doesn't match the ABV. Some nice raisin and prune flavors but it needs more of a malty/earthy presence to offset the sweetness. Its fine but I don't think I would pick this up again.

Rich, almost regal brown color sported a thick and full head of dense foam.

The nose is sweet and strong. Dark fruits like prune and date, mix with caramel, fudge, chocolate, molasses and crab apples.

The flavors are rich and savory with a front of roasted coffee, caramel, toffee and brownie. The middle is a blast of chocolate before it ends with maple, dark fruits and green apples.

The feel is downright amazing. It's velvety smooth and perfectly thick. It's 13 pct and there's no evidence of such.

One of the biggest surprises I've had in the world of craft beer and one I'd urge everyone to try.

A: The beer is opaque brown in color and poured with a thin beige head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles consistently covering the surface.
S: There are moderate aromas of dark fruits with notes of sweetness on the nose.
T: The overall taste is quite sweet and has flavors of brown sugar, dark fruits, molasses and port wine.
M: It feels medium-bodied and relatively smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some warming from the alcohol in the finish.
D: Although the alcohol is definitely perceptible, it tastes more like 9% instead of 13%, making it surprisingly drinkable.

My 300th review! Hope I picked a good one...
Poured from 750 mL bottle into NBB snifter.
A: Pours a very very dark brown with 1/2 inch tan head. Good retention and some lacing.
S: Fresh belgian yeast, melon, milk chocolate, and in the background some spice. Some alcohol too, but not nearly as much as you'd expect.
T: Wow! Several layers of complexity here. There is a quick hit of melon and almost burnt chocolate. This transitions into a perfect balance of smooth caramel malt and sharp hops (?piney?). Fresh doughy yeast, belgian spice, plum wine, dark dried fruit, and herbal notes make appearances as well. Nice alcohol burn in the finish. That combined with the pine note make it almost gin-like. Very complex...very nice.
M: Smooth and silky at first, then turns toward grape-like sweetness and then bitter (hops). Finishes with a pleasant but strong alcohol burn. Medium-heavy feel (not as heavy as you'd expect).
D: Given the ABV, this is very drinkable. Very complex...nice sipper. I'm very glad I have more of these to enjoy. I am intrigued to see how this will age. Seek it out!

Paid $22.99 for a 750ml bottle from Bobby's Liquor in San Jose, CA. This was one of the more difficult beers to open I've ever had. Ended up using a wine bottle opener on this plastic cork that was embedded in the bottle. I pour into a La Trappe chalice to review.

Half inch brownish tan head after a heavy pour. Darkest shade of brown before black. Good lacing and a very small layer of retention.

Prune, raisin, fig, plum, grape soda, molasses, brown sugar, a hint of Belgian spice and some mild maltiness to balance out the sweetness. This one does come off quite sweet and a bit boozy.

Taste brings on much more malt and balance. Dark chocolate quite heavy here and the dark fruits now seem to take a backseat to the more stout like characteristics. Still a bit too much sweetness going on here that needs to be tamed down.

Mouthfeel is thick and sticky from sweetness. Full bodied and seems to need more carbonation to improve its drinkability. Lasting dark chocolate and candy sweetness in the finish.

For the hefty pricetag, I was quite disappointed in this one.

A- Almost pitch black, light brown head is thin and quickly disappears, nothing more to be expected from a 13%ABV beer

S- A hint of booze upfront, both sweet and roasted aromas, chocolate, maybe liquorice

T- Sweet upfront with a sugary feel and a definitely fixing dose of warming alcohol. Still perfectly balanced with a slightly bitter earthy finish. Notes of chocolate, dark fruits. Very nice

M- Suprisingly light body for the ABV, mostly due to low carbonation. Feels kind of sirupy while filling your mouth with warming comfort

O- A perfect slow sipper for the winter
