Presentation: 750ml brown glass bottle sealed, corked with a black single strapped wire cage that eats deep into the cork. The thumbed cork has a No. 144302 on it. Main and neck labels are dark brown edged with a metallic red border; the main obverse label has a picture of the partially ruined Abbaye dAulne which sits next to the newly installed Brewery. Described as Abbaye dAulne Blonde des Pères a described as a Blond Ale. Listed at 6% Alc./Vol. and recommended to be served slowly at 46° 50° F. Best Before End 26/09/07 E 11:20.
Appearance: The corks on the three previous Abbaye dAulne brews from Val de Sambre have all been tightly packed and this one was no exception. A decent amount of aural input and a fine whispy rising gunsmoke entertained. Used my tall Maredsous glass yet again, and the head peaked at half the depth of the glass on the first pour. Mahogany body has a near perfect ruby clarity to it, only the rising streamers break the silence. Thick dark tan head is soft and sponge-like with an appearance of expanded foam. Resilient foam cap slowly leaves some lacing on the walls. Carbonation is low but the head never suffers and exhibits excellent longevity.
Nose: Mmmmm, this has a very nice aroma. Spiced malts with a healthy herbal input. Background is of dark fruits, freshly turned soil, earth, peat and dark skinned berries. Has the merest hint of brown crystallized sugar here and there.
Taste: Very interesting, quite a lot is going on in this brew and it seemingly happens all at once on the first sip. Malts are toasted, dark fruits, some brown sugar and spices too. Middle is dry yet luscious in a way, spice malts balance earthy hops. Prunes add some solvent depth to the flavors and a feint dark chocolate also adds strength. The malts in the finish have a more roasted dimension, whilst the lingering aftertaste has a delicate anise input and a decent afterlife.
Mouthfeel: The body is very good; it throws out a healthy feel with a chewy backbone. The malts do the business here. The texture is of brown sugar toffee with a nice whole meal finish. The carbonation was a little low, but it seemed to impart that familiar DAulne talcum soft feel. Smooth and very clean though with a big feel bigger than its stated 6% strength.
Drinkability: Clean lines, a lovely mixture of spiced malts and dry dark fruits with a soft conditioning and wholesome feel all contribute to the high Drinkability of this one.
Overall: Over the last few days I have had both the Blond and Brune 9° as well as the Blond and Brune 6°. What is interesting to me is that despite the difference in strength that all were sold at HiTimes for the same price, $9.99 for a 750ml bottle. However, the Blond/Brune 9° seems to be filtered, whereas the Blond/Brune 6° do appear to have some conditioning, though it is minimal to say the least. In both the case of the 6° and 9° I have found the Brune to be at least a 0.5 point better overall than its Blond brother in quality. I feel that for the money there are better offerings out there, but this one is well worth trying.

Malty, above average mouthfeel treat. Not complex, like a Belgian chocolatey brown. Malty aroma. Recommended to serve just under room temp.Caramel toffee, some sugar. Found, on sale, at Angotti Beverages. ABV on the low side. Carbonation suitable and contributes to easy drinking.

Poured clear dark brown with deep amber highlights. Had a good solid inch of long lasting tan head, and lots of carbonation running through the beer.
The smell is not good, a bad bottle maybe? Funky gym socks and sour yeast are predominant.
The flavor is very sweet with ripe fruity grape and cherry flavors. The funky yeast flavor takes over in the finish leaving a cloying sour and funky taste on the tongue.
The mouthfeel is very zippy with lots of carbonation and a medium fullness.
I will have to try this again, I hope it was an off bottle, otherwise they would be better off leaving this one in Belgium.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown almost burgundy color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar and fruity yeast ester is quite interesting. Taste is a mix between some candi sugar, substantial Belgian malt backbone and fruity yeast ester. Body is a bit thin with some good carbonation. Nothing earth shattering but well done for the style.

Pours Dark brown with a medium head and sizzling lace.
The aroma was dark fruits and malts and the taste was sweet,malty,brown sugar with a touch of chocolate. There was a hint of hops and I liked that.
The feel was not as grand as the taste,but despite not that I felt the light,high carbonation was well balanced with all the flavors. There was a tingly,sizzling feeling towards the finish and
it went down crisp and clean.
Notes: A good brown ale and overall something I would love to have again. Solid in almost every way.

A- Pours a rich dark mahogany body. Billowy tan head filled the tulip halfway on the first pour. Beautiful streamers up the side of the glass. Nice appearance to this one.
S- Spicy malts and very organic soil. Notes of candi sugar and molassas.
T- Toasted malts and figs right up front. Sweet brown sugar and plums float around in the background along with a faint hop bitterness to balance the sweetness
M- The body's a little on the dry side though full and chewy. Carbonation level is pleasant.
D- Its a nice mild Belgian dark. Nothing crazy, but pleasant

BB 28-07-05. 6% ABV instead of listed 7. Cellared well in own house. Good presentation with well lasting yellow tainted head and dark brown beercollor. Nose showes good roasty and carramellic maltyness and has on top a flowery and citrussy esternote. Good taste also being very smooth and caramellic sweetness, not overdone and with nice bite of roast and coffee. Fine carbonisation and smooth and balanced taste makes mouthfeel good also. Well drinkable, taste and good beer IMO.

750ML bottle. Poured into a tulip it forms a rich tan creamy head. Strong lasting power but leaves behind minimal lace. Dark amber body with some ruby red edges.
First response is it has a nice fruity backbone that has me interested. Roasted malts mix nicely with the light cloves and solid dark fruit frontside. Hops are spiced and late in the game. Mouthfeel lingers a bit and creamy towards the end.
Notes: A solid Belgian dark ale. A bit light in body and complexity. No worries in this household, it held its own was clean and warrants a looksee if you can find it. The best of the three I've tried from this brewery.

750ml poured into a goblet
Appears a murky deep mahogany when held up to the light. It's pretty opaque with a good amount of carbonation. The head is somewhere between a cream and a tan color and rose to a full inch and faded in due time. It's a mysterious looking beer.
Had a big nose of candied sugar, fruit (grapes, raisins and cherry) and yeast.
The tastes pretty much mimics the nose. It's right on for the style. Very balanced. Not full of flavor, but it's not supposed to be.
Extremely thin and really disintegrates on the tongue. It goes down pretty easy and has a friendly aftertaste. I would drink this again, a very good example of the style.

Pours a dark but clear brown that shows ruby when held to light with a tan head from an aggressive pour. Nose is slightly perfume like with a bit of a sugar presence and a stronger touch of yeast. Flavor is fruity with a touch of wood in there. Extremely doughy with an almost flour edge to it. Just seems like taking a bite out of very undercooked bread. Feel is standard stuff. I didn't really like this one. Way too doughy and way off. I wonder if it was a bad bottle.

Pours very dark brown with ruby highlights. Head is a crisp cream color in contrast and offers thick sticky lacing.
Aroma is dry and powdery, with a generous yeasty funk. Sour, with an herbal, or floral hop.
Taste is initially sweetly malty, and slightly musty. Very dry and powdery. Dark fruit and dry cocoa make an appearance. Finish is quite dry and musty with lingering earthy hop bitterness and a mild sourness.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied.
Overall, a drinkable BDA. Plenty of dry musty dark fruit. Unusual, and may be an acquired taste. Worth a try.

750mp caged corked and split in 1/2
A: Nice super deep brown color. Nice 2 fingers of off white head.
S: Earthy. Some spice and other yeast tones. Brown sugar hints as well.
T: Really sweet for a brown. Figs and other dark fruits but in a very subdued way. Solid Belgian brown but nothing remarkable.
M: Med body with nothing remarkable about it. Neither a positive nor a negative.
D: You could session this were it not for the price. $9? for the bottle. A solid Belgian brown.

Poured a hazy brown with a huge frothy light brown head that was fully lasting and produced excellent lacing.
Heavy malt, brown sugar and citrus aroma.
Medium to full body with a sticky texture.
Full balanced sweet bitter flavor with the same long finish with a very small alcohol tone.
Great well balanced brew.

Equal parts orange, cherry and bronze when brightly backlit with sunshine. Add a generous splash of amber and we'd have a tequila sunrise. The semi-firm beige cap displays big, soft craters that look as if they were put there by raindrops. There isn't an abundance of lace, and what's there isn't sticky, but this is still a good looking Belgian dark.
The nose, as well, is right on the money for the style. It's brown bread malty (or brown malt bready) and has a pleasing clove yeastiness that is just right in terms of intensity. Brune des Peres certainly smells like it'll be delicious beer.
And it is delicious beer. I have to remember that this isn't a BSDA so I shouldn't expect the same amount of flavor, power and complexity. For what it is, this Brasserie Val De Sambre ale gets the job done and then some. I'm only a few ounces in and I can already tell that I like it more than its Belgian pale ale sibling (Blonde des Peres).
The flavor profile is reminiscent of well-toasted brown bread sprinkled liberally with cocoa powder and bitter hops leaves. In fact, even though their flavor is secondary to the malt, this is one of the hoppiest versions that I've ever tasted. That, more than anything, is what makes me like it as much as I do. Once a hophead, always a hophead.
I still think the yeasty spiciness is nigh on perfect. Less wouldn't be enough and more would be too much. Although many brown ales, no matter the country of origin, tend to have a fruity sourness, this one doesn't. It is a little fruity (chocolate-dipped apples), but sweet and sour are virtually nowhere to be found. I don't miss 'em when the beer is this hoppy and this good.
The mouthfeel is the only (admittedly minor) letdown. It's on the lighter end of the style scale, which isn't a problem in and of itself. I fully expected that there would be quite a few bubbles zipping around. It's just that they make the beer lean toward fizzy and brittle rather than soft and creamy. Nitpicking? Probably.
I like Brune des Peres and think it's one of the best Belgian dark ales that I've had in many a month. It tastes and feels like a toned down BSDA, which is exactly how I like my BDAs to taste and feel. If you run across a selection of beer from this brewery and only feel like springing for one bottle, I'd pick the Brune over the Blonde in a heartbeat.

Dark purple looks reminiscent of wine with a plum, dark fruit aroma accented by alcohol. A watery feel that is smooth and balanced. Taste characterized by dark grains, dark fruit, and a welcomed dry finish. This beer has a warming alcohol sensation while drinking it, in combination with the dark fruit taste it could get annoying by the end of the glass. An average Belgian ale.
