Wanted to see how this would compare to Capital's Amber, since this is from a former brewer from Capital. Lagers are my 1st choice in a beer style, American Macro, craft, or foreign.

Poured into a old tavern glass. Nice dark amber color, and off white head.

If you swish the bottle around it has a faint orange pop aroma, not bad, but a little odd. Bready, yeast.

Taste....did someone just pour me a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale "light"? I may be exaggerating, but this lager taste heavily hopped, as a Celebration IPA is heavily malty. This beer lies very dry on the tongue. As it warms it takes on a Oktoberfest malt note. This beer has a lot going on if you sit back, and pick it apart. Yet it seems like a easy one to enjoy a few bottles, 5.5% perfect. Nice lacing on the glass, if that matters.

On my second, good stuff. Not what I'd expect from a brewer who doesnt care for IPAs. The hops dry out the malt taste on your tongue, thats how I'd describe it, but in a good way.

All in all, very good in my books. Way to go Wisconsin!

Pours clear amber with a thin white lasting head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of caramelized bread and a hint of sour-ish citric fruits.

The taste is of sweet, fresh caramel - firm malt - with citric, bitter-ish balance in the finish.

It has a creamy, smooth medium body.

A very nice, well-balanced American Amber Lager. Nice hop touch in the finish.

Finally saw some of Mr. Nelson's new beer in a store and grabbed up the lager; mostly because I like a good lager and I know Kirby makes great lagers.

A -- Clear, copper-gold with a dense, creamy, long-lasting off-white head that leaves good lacing.

S -- Mellow, spicy hops up front with light breadiness back.

T -- Spicy hops up front, some mellow, nutty, biscuit character in the middle; bitter, earthy hop characters in good balance with a distinct, but inviting bitterness. There's a mild citrus fruitiness throughout. The finish has a good yeast, breadiness and the aftertaste folds back to earthy hops.

M -- Mouthfeel is smooth to lightly mineral with a medium body.

O -- This is a great, clean Lager with certain characteristics that will win over Ale drinkers. It reminds me of the first micro-brewed beers that emerged in the beginning of the era.

The WI Brewing web site calls this a "Classic Bavarian Lager." Well... I never had anything like this on my visits to Bavaria, but marketing doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

In short, this is what Leinie's Red is supposed to taste like....except get rid of the adjunct grain, use some quality hops and use lot's of them.

Beautiful grain aroma. A bit of floral hops, I detected a sweet honey, cherries and toasted bread.

Remarkably smooth and kind of slick in the mouth. The grain bill sings. More honey, cheerios, bread, cherry. A good bitterness keeps it in check.

It took me a while to get around to this, but if you're having a brat fry this is the beer you wanna have on hand. Great for everyone from Cicerones to Budmillercoors crowds.
