After stopping at Two Roads, the choice for dinner was Ginger Man in SoNo. So there we went, it’s been about a million years since the last time I was in Norwalk. I was surprised at how dead it was on a Thursday night… very little activity around.

We walked by Guvnor’s and decided to go in. It was completely empty. Not a single soul inside aside from the bartender and the chef. Their tap list is written on a mirror behind the bar and includes a Double Bock, an IPA , a Stout, an Amber, a Pilsner an “Ultra Light” beer. They’re playing it fairly safe, for sure, but their brews taste good.

Easily the worst part about this joint is the bottle list: Coors, Miller, Corona, Becks… offensive indeed.

The food is basic bar food (burgers, ‘wiches, wings), but let me tell you the fries we had were SUPERB. Steak-style fries, double-fried, crisp and not greasy, dusted with rosemary and parmesan and with a roasted-garlic aioli to die for. I’m hungry just thinking about them.

The taps were a bit too cold and the place was dangerously empty for a year-old brewery (we both asked how long they’ve been in business), but Guvnor’s deserves better. I don’t get the bad reviews.

Guvnor's is a small recently remodel brewpub in the SoNo (South Norwalk) entertainment district. Very clean inside, but small; bar seat maybe 10 tightly, and behind a half-wall partition were about 10 tables. A big plexi-glass wall behind the bar revealed a bank of 4 copper-clad fermenters... Food was better than the beer. We were there from noon until one on a Wednesday, and during that time less than a dozen patrons came in. The one person barmaid/ waitress was pleasant, but limited in her beer and brewery knowledge. On a street full of restaurants and beer bars, there are a few places I'll want to check out before I come back here.
