Pours opaque black with a small, fizzy, quickly dissipating head. Aroma is roasty, milk chocolate, coffee and some hints of plum. Medium, effervescent mouthfeel, nice body for the size of the beer. Taste is roasty, bitter chocolate, a little caramel and a hint of licorice, not as sweet as the smell would suggest. Fairly dry on the finish for a sweet stout (basing the style of the beer on the brewer's description, which identifies the beer as a sweet stout, as opposed to its name). Very solid beer and eminently sessionable.

Pours a deep brown with red edges and a nice Khaki head. This is all roast grains and unsweetened dark chocolate. Big body; big flavors and bitter. Again, big bitter chocolate. Nice, and yet something is missing. There is no real character to this one. Tastes like a big chocolate beer but nothing really likeable or drinkable about it. Yet, nothing really to downgrade either. Real flaw is that there is no complexities.

my second beer from wiley roots. nice to see these guys doing well. i think they have a neat operation going, and the beer is very good. this porter has a lot of chocolate malt and proper dark chocolate going on in it, and it never ever gets sweet, which i think is its best feature. pale dark brown, a little cloudy, but nice and heady and rich looking. the nose is dry cocoa and roasted barley, not bitter at all, and well refined. the flavor shows quite a but of straight up chocolate, its dark and semisweet, with no leftover sugar. the base porter i think is also a success, fuller bodied but easy drinking and showing a lot of the barley dark roast in the finish where hops would be in other styles. there is maybe a little more of a yeast profile to this beer than i think the style calls for, but i dont mid it here, and it makes this distinct. not sure if there is actually chocolate in here or not, but it conveys that very well. a nice chalky dry texture to it, which sounds odd, but fits the flavor profiles beautifully. i have to get up there and visit this place.
