A: The beer is clear but very dark red in color (black when viewed from afar) and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center of the glass and a thick collar around the edge.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some faint hints of chocolate and bitterness.
T: The taste has faint bits of sweetness with flavors of dark malts and hints
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied, clean and a little watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but the taste lacks complexity.

Love the swing top bottles, and the cheap prices for great German beer! I've had a cold for a few days so haven't been able to even drink, let alone review, so this should be a nice welcome back to beer. I think a date but hard to read, 01813 14... something in 2014 maybe?

A one handed pour without tipping the glass yields a huge 2+ finger frothy creamy tan colored head that fades at a med pace with nice sticky lacing, big bubbles popping, and eventually settles to a nice 1/2 finger thick head that never goes away. The beer itself is pretty much pitch black, no light really getting through, and even has thick creamy legs on the sides of the glass.

Nose reminds me a lot of the dark Czech beers I had when over there... lots of husky grainy malts, tons of wheat, like wet hay, straw, middle of a hay stack in a barn kinda malt, cereal grains little doughy and bready, with touch of metallic and mineral lager notes, mild soft complex decoction like notes. Alsoa touch of a darker caramelized malt note.

Taste brings biscuit right off, toasty malts, grainy and husky again, lots more wheat, toasted straw, wet hay, farmhouse wheat and hay flavors. Then into cereal grains, liquid juicy cereal with more biscuit and a little caramelized malt flavor, lots of toasted grainy flavors all around. A fair creamy flavor too, mild dark toast with creaminess. It's very dry, like sucking the water out of my tongue dry, and brings a nice caramel finish, crisp finish as well, little lager softness and touch of minerality, finally a touch of grassy hop bitterness, and little lager mineral note.

Mouth is med to a bit lighter bod, but nice softness and smooth, little creamy feel, decent carb.

Overall not bad but not what I expected, not very good either for a German beer... plenty of nice toasty malts, but lots of grainy husky wheat and hay like flavors, not what I expected for a schwarzbier, also no real dark malt notes other than some caramel, and lager notes aren't the best even. The nice smooth soft feel was quite nice, and what I expect from a beer like this, but the rest was meh.

Flip-top half-litre bottle from a local Aldi store: best before 22 June 2013, poured into a Wolnzacher Brauhaus tall glass tankard on 8 Dec 2012 (@ home).

Looked great: huge tan coloured head of foam sat on top of a deep, dark ruby red body. The brew was clear and clean when held up to a good light source.

The aroma given off was minimal: some German rye bread and maltiness with a touch of grain in the background.

Taste wise it came to life a little: malty, semi-sweet and lively in the mouth feel. I've struggled with this style before: having trouble finding any strong flavours and any depth, this was better than most. Far from robust and flavoursome it did however have something about it. There are chocolate and coffee notes in the taste and it does feel a little richer than most German Black Lagers I've encounted. Considering the price (less than two pounds): this was a good deal.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a dark chestnut amber with a one finger light tan head that dissipated fairly quickly to a ring around the glass with wispy lacing. Aroma of sweet toasted malt, molasses, light nuts and a hint of hops. Flavor follows with toasted malt, a slight nuttiness, rye bread, finishes slightly dry with light grassy hops, faintly metallic. Light bodied with nice carbonation. The flavor is subdued, but very nicely balanced. Flavors are good enough that they make me want a slightly more intense version. Still nice schwarzbier that popped up in our market and is apparently a one time only arrival. I'll have it again if it shows up.

Dark appearance, dark mahogany reflexes. Quite compact and abundant foam, beige in color.
At the smell, it is very delicate, with light notes of roasted.
The taste is quite light too, with liquorice, roasted, some light burnt.
A little better in the aftertaste, but it remains too delicate.
Drinkable, but not character. Drinkable, but anonymous.

Almost black with light tan head, and good lacing. Smells spicy and sweet with a hint of cocoa. Taste is very sweet with little bitterness. Mouthfeel is mediud-full with good carbonation. This beer is a nice change of pace, but I could not drink it too often.

Pours dark brown with a tan foam head. No lace.

Some nice malt aromas, a little cocoa and nuts, a touch of molasses. Not a strong aroma though.

Nice roasted malt, with a little cocoa, no charred or burnt notes. Molasses essence, meaning flavor but not sweet, and maybe some nuts. Mildly bitter. Long pleasant roasted malt finish. A slight sour note in there somewhere. It all works.

A little acidic, mildly carbonated.

Nice version of the style. Drinkable and multi-layered. A very soft beer. Smooth. Worth trying.

16.9 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A nice two finger head was poured into the glass. The head has reduced a little bit and left some frothy lacing on the glass. It is a dark brown black color with a little bit of vision when held up to a light.

Smell: Caramel, toffee, chocolate, bready malts, a little lager yeast, and noble grassy hops.

Taste: Caramel, toffee, chocolate, bready malts, lager yeastiness, mild hop bitterness, a little roastiness, and molasses.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, a little water, medium carbonation, crisp, refreshing, and a bit smooth.

Overall Pretty cool schwarzbier that I have never seen before. Found it in JP and figured I really don't have much to lose. I could enjoy more of these in the future.

Best before 18-03-05. Poors in with huge and thick lasting foam thats yellow collored with a brown touch. Beercollor is almost black with bordeaux shine and totaly clear.
Nose is sweet, with lots of malthints going from munich/pale to a roastmalt( without the usual bitterness though( cristal?)).
Taste is sweet, malty, litle oxidised but still fresh mostly cause there seems to be a lemon/lime arome with it. Aftertaste misses litle bitterness but is clean and sweet. The thickness opf the brew makes mouthfeel ok but it misses some bitterness( in my opinion). Drinks easy but sweetness is so big that for me this 0.5l botle was enough. Good beer especially for sombody who likes it sweet and without to much bitterness.

500ml bottle. Nonic shape Mug. Very dark brown color & deep ruby tints to the light. Light beige froth, brief crown. Roasted & floral aromas, metallic hues. Burnt & dried upfront. Light body. Moderate to high carbonation. Watery texture. Black grain hints, smoky touch, & clean bitterness in the middle. Bitter cocoa & dried nuts notes in a long bitter finish. Licorice candy on the aftertaste.

Enjoyed this flop top bottle out of a pint glass.

A: Pours a Dark black hue with a thick light brown 2-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves a wispy lace.

S: Slightly malt aroma – not a huge aroma here.

T: Smooth slightly roasted malt flavor with hints of licorce. Not a huge flavor here either.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: I’ve had a couple of Schwarzbiers and they all seem to have this same bland yet smooth flavor and aromas. It’s not a bad beer but nothing in it really stands out.
