bottle purchased for me by a family friend that heard I liked good beer, thus this was gifted. Well the bottle does say "premium", so I'll give him that!

A: cloudy orange with some light thin bead egg shell foams. A ring of foam remains around the top of the glass after about a 2 finger foamy head. light swirls of silky films remain on top. The body is cloudy with some real raw honey characteristics. Has as much white character as it does orange, and they clash for a

S: Some watery clove over not so apparent banana peel. Smells kind of like old butter lettuce. Comes off a bit fake to me, the yeast character seems weak and macrod. Not much sweetness, but a bit of wheat to at least make it apparent what style of beer I'm drinking.

T: Some wet hay, soggy wheat, and light old orange peel that's baked away all of its citrus qualities. A little bit of floral character that makes me think of air fresheners that you see in taxi cabs. Not really crazy about the flavor, and it has that really washed over bitterness that makes me think macro macro macro. Just very tame with a lot of watery flavors. Celery in the finish.

M: Very fizzy, effervescent. It is as relentless as you could ever hope a soda pop to be. A nice feel that is perhaps even a bit light for a hefeweizen, but it's by no means bad. Fizzy, but soft, and I may actually think better of it if there were some flavors for the mouth feel to accentuate.

O: Just because it says premium doesn't necessarily mean it is, don't believe everything you read on beer bottles -- I'm sure that's a Chinese proverb that I have yet to discover a citation for. The best thing this beer has going for it is that it's a traditional German Style from Germany and it has German writing on the bottle. Other than that I'd say it just falls in that mediocre category. This might be the real deal as far as tradition, but I call it a poser in terms of execution.

Poured from the 500mL can into a weizen glass.

A: The beer is a nice bright color, very hazy, with a good amount of the distinctive weizen head.

S: Spicy with lots of banana and gum. Good bready malt character in there as well. A great representation of the banana bread character a weizen can have...

T: Spice and subdoued yeast character. Sweet with bubble gum and some citrus but mostly sweet bread. Finishes with another nice spicy note. This is smooth all the way through with lots of character.

Overall a good representation of this style for me. Not a lot of bite, which could be a good or bad thing depending on your preference. A bit thin in the mouthfeel department, but I love the smooth bready taste and smell of this beer, and it's just sweet enough. Probably would pick this up again.

Nice little Hefe Weis beer. It's not the best out there but its a good one. Taste not to strong of a yeast taste and not to watered down with a pleasant after taste. I would recommend this beer to my friends to drink at home. I love wheat beers and this while not being top 3 material is def worth a try.

From: Binny's, Champaign, IL
Date: None, but "L08H1" stamped on label
Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass

A hefeweizen that I've often seen on the shelf, but never picked up until now. Valentins hefeweizen is an all-around average version of the style, not bad by any means, but not particularly memorable when compared to other German versions. At $2.50 per half-liter, it's not a bad value, but for slightly more, one can try Weihenstephaner-level class. Still, a good, light-in-body version of the style that was enjoyed on a warm summer day.

Pours a ~4cm tall head of clean, white bubbles, small in size, creating a very dense and frothy head. Retention is about one and a half minutes, rather below average for the style. Head fades to a 0.3cm cap atop the body of the beer for the duration of the drink. Lacing is fairly minimal, a few thin horizontal lines and scattered dots cling to the insides of the glass. Body is a rich, deep golden orange color, quite hazy (70-80% opaque), with light bringing out pale golden yellow hues throughout. Carbonation is substantial in number and vigor, with many streams rising from the botom of the glass in great profusion and speed.

Aroma of slightly sweet, primarily bread-like, wheat and barley malt, with notable accents of phenols (clove/nutmeg oil) and lesser amounts of banana and lemon-like ester.

Front of palate detects pleasantly bread-like wheat and barley malts, light toasted bread/caramel sweetness, moderate banana ester and yeastiness, and light phenols (clove and nutmeg). Mid-palate of sweet, bread-like wheat and barley malts with a touch of light toasted bread/caramel sweetness, much stronger phenols (clove and nutmeg oils), light banana and lemon esters, and marginally perceptible apple cider. Back of palate picks up continued bread-like malts with mild toasted bread sweetness, moderately strong phenols, and mild apple cider. Aftertaste of wheat bread with hearty yeast, slightly spicy phenols, and very low banana-like esters and apple cider.

Beer is medium-light to light in body, with medium-low levels of carbonation, leading to a fine foaminess on the palate that dissipates a bit too quickly, leaving the beer feeling a bit thin and slightly watery. Closes semi-dry, with light residual stickiness on the palate and lips.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down but consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of bananas are present in the nose along with some notes of wheat.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except that the wheat flavors are stronger than the bananas and there also are some additional flavors of apples. No cloves are detectable.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and has some refreshing properties, but I wouldn't consider it to be thirst-quenching. It lacks the complexity exhibited by the top beers of the style but isn't a bad hefeweizen if you like basic flavors of wheat and bananas.

Valentins weisbier

LOOK: 16.9 oz bottle poured into a weizen glass. Hazed deep cloudy straw color. White foam forms, and gradually recedes. Looks sexy in its proper glass, perhaps a shade or two darker than the norm.

SMELL: Estery clove, cotton candy, herbal elements and rustic bread. Some clean German yeast makes itself known.

TASTE: Cotton candy, full grain bread, green banana, clove. Handsomely flavorful and very true to the style. The sweet grains add a nice bit of mustiness to the beer as well as depth. Hop flavor is leafy and herbal, with a well suiting complimentary bitterness.

This is a very fine Hefeweizen, with rich flavor and fine balance. Paired very nicely with a meat and cheese platter. I'm sure ill be drinking this again. Excellent hefe.
