The English do it right, there is no doubt. But Texans do it better. This brown ale is based off of the traditional English style brown ale but carries a heartier malt profile and a more balanced approach to the style for the American palette. With a light to medium body, the Sir William's is easy drinking but doesn't lack in complexity from roasted and specialty malts. This beer is hopped with traditional Goldings and Target hops. It was the 2014 gold medal and 2016 silver medal winner at GABF.

I tried this at the Grapevine location. It poured a clear dark amber with thin white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had toffee notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with malt and toffee flare. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.

12 oz can poured into a glass, the beer is a chill hazed brown. There is a beige head that leaves some decent lacing.

The aroma is of brown bread and bit of toffee.

The beer leads with a bit of nutty sweetness and caramel malts. There is also a whisper of alcohol which is surprising in a 4.9% brew.

The mouth is a bit thin but has nice lower levels of carbonation which I think suit this style.

I like brown ales and would revisit this one in the future.

Grapevine is really more well known for their wine. I am not familiar with this brewer despite being some what local. But I bought one as a mix a six to give it try. Nice dark brown color with a good foamy head. Brown ales aren't my favorite, but I enjoyed this brew. It was bitter, which is not my favorite, but not so bitter that couldn't enjoy. I would buy again.

Nice, good bitter taste, but not overwhelming. There was a noticeable taste of alcohol despite the low ABV rating. Nice brown color,& strong carbonation. I'll revisit.

a weird brown ale, more on the dark amber side than a brown, and i taste a lot more of those caramel forward red malts than i do of anything resembling chocolate or roasted malt. it comes out in a pint glass totally flat from the tap, murky and somewhat still, unappealing really. it smells a lot better, a good mix of the deepest red malts, toasted nicely, somewhat nutty and raw, maybe even a little yeasty. good malt flavor to this too, browner than it looks, i definitely get a little bit of the more appropriate grains for the style, some bitterness from some english hops, and a prominent and unfiltered strain of english ale yeast that adds a rustic and classic nature to the beer. hints of toasted nuts and then a little sweetness before the bittering hops kick in. lousy mouthfeel though, as soft as it is, its really flat, not barely a prickle of carbonation to it, and that aspect is a real let down. its nice in the morning on a hangover, drinks like a smoothie in that regard, but id like to see this have a little more life. overall a decent dark red to brown ale, somewhat unique in that it rides the line between the two, but it could use a little cleaning up on the whole.

Looks almost black from a distance. Really dark for such a low ABV brown. The light reveals brown and roby tones. Off white head that recedes fairly quickly.

First whiff won me over. Big chocolate, toast, and nuts. A little warming reveals some sweetness.

Flavor doesn't let me down. Gets a little more roasty on the flavor with some slight coffee to go with the aroma notes.

I'm going to need some Peticolas Alfred Brown and this head to head. Very nice.
