Worthington's Red Shield
16.9 oz. brown bottle, dated "Best Before End 15 MAR 14 075"; sampled on 15 JULY 2014
$3.99 @ Wine Legend, Cherry Hill, NJ (and past BEST BY date)

Appearance: Hazy deep gold / amber body beneath a very full, big-bubbled head of frothy "antique" white. Average-sized bubbles can be seen racing towards the surface. The head retention is quite good but the lacing leaves a bit to be desired.

Aroma: Malt, as might be expected. Yeasty fruitiness, mainly apple. Sweetish.

Taste: Malty, grassy, and fruity. There's more fruit to it than the apple but I can't place it. It's almost a tropical fruit flavor... melon/pineapple perhaps. It's not particularly bitter, and the malt seems to be stretching to get away, although the malt will broaden as it ages and oxidizes so I assume that it would be a little bit more in focus if I had a fresh sample. Some mineral character and a drop of honey appear in the finish along with more grassy hops. It lingers nicely, giving you more time to enjoy it.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium in body. Gently crisp.

Overall: An obviously well-made bitter that's readily accessible and yet rich in character. Remarkably drinkable.

Live review. 500ml bottle with a date a couple weeks away. Poured into an Imperial nonic glass. Mostly clear light-amber color with a thick white frothy head and a ton of bubbles making their way upward in the beer. Head quickly dissipates to a thin crown leaving behind small spots of lacing.

Aroma is fairly well balanced. Sweet pale malts, particularly biscuit, grain, and a touch of honey combine with earthy and spicy hops and some fruity esters and bread dough from the yeast.

Interesting flavor combination. Spicy and a hint of lemon along with a noticeable honey flavor. Biscuity malts and a very dry, earthy finish.

Light bodied and very highly carbonated. The carbonation combines with the infamously hard Burton water in a very unpleasant way. Very sharp, and the carbonation reminds me of an AAL.

Overall, this is disappointing. There's a horrible mouthfeel that's way too carbonated. Admittedly, I had high expectations; White Shield is a truly phenomenal beer. Refreshing and balanced, but terribly average in every other way.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a large off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains light caramelized malts, honey, citrus and some hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, citrus and honey. Then some breadiness comes in from a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there a better choices within the style.

500 ml bottle served in a lager glass. Best by date is stamped on the back label - consumed about 1 week past this.

Pours with a tall, durable bone-colored head over a highly carbonated amber body.

The aroma is poor and suggests a bad bottle. No other signs of this excepting a less objectionable carryover of the off-notes to the flavor. The flavor is, nonetheless, OK. It's mild, as expected, with light biscuity malts, subtle fruity notes, and a touch of spicy hops.

O: even projecting a prime version, there's no compelling reason to seek this out.

Best before 3/15/14.

Pours a murky orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, earth, grass, and slight fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with fruit and grass flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, refreshing, and easy to drink.

A: Pours a brilliant, hazy gold with a creamy white head that leaves only a minimal amount of lace as it recedes.

S: Gentle aromas of tea, leather, herbs, lemon, minerals, moist earth, caramel, and biscuit take a little while to express themselves on the nose.

T: Notes of minerals, leather, crackers, biscuits, caramel, honey, lemon, lime zest, white pepper, tea, moist earth, and brown butter fill the mouth. The finish is fleeting, presenting muted notes of butter, biscuits, crackers, tea, and lemon.

M: Very light in body and relatively dry. Carbonation is very crisp and intense.

O: While this is not a bad English pale ale, I am not exactly taken with it. Decent enough, but there are better out there.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface.
S: Light aromas of pale malts are present in the nose along with notes if fruity yeast.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except that the fruity yeast is a little stronger and there is a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: You can definitely taste the Burton-upon-Trent water profile in this beer; it definitely tastes like a Bass Pale Ale.

Worthington’s Red Shield has a very thick, foamy, creamy, off-white head, a hazy, golden appearance, some bubble streams, and heavy lacing rings left on the side of the glass. The aroma is pungent, sweet, full, and bready, and the taste is of those elements, with a mellow bitterness and a light toffee note. Mouthfeel is medium and soft, and Worthington’s Red Shield finishes semi-dry, easy drinking, and delicious. Overall, this is wonderful, and I recommend it!

Bottle from Home Bargains (£1.00 for 500ml):
Mild amber with a thick & foamy white head that holds very well.

Biscuit malts & sweetness with a fruity aroma & some citrus and a few light, grassy hops as well. Lively but not all that pronounced.

Biscuit malts again feature, as do some of the fruits from the nose and a lot of citrus and grassy hops again, much like the smell really with no one flavour more noticeable than the rest really. There is some light caramel and a few sweet malts to round things off.

Very lively carbonation although not gassy, and with a medium body and a crisp taste with plenty of bite to it and a dry finish.

A fairly average beer on the whole with strong carbonation and a nice, crisp taste but it was lacking any strong flavours and it was a bit one dimensional. An easy enough beer to drink but certainly not one that is worth seeking out on its own.
