A: Pours an oily black with subtle brownish amber highlights and a creamy tan head that leaves only a modest amount of lacing as it recedes.

S: Aromas of cream, dark chocolate, pine, spruce, herbs, lemon, and lime are present on the nose.

T: Sweet, malty notes of caramel, treacle, dark chocolate, dark bread, and cream are matched by zesty hop notes of lemon, lime, bitter orange, grapefruit, herbs, pine, and spruce. The finish is earthy and bitter with bread, chocolate, herb, lemon, and pine flavors.

M: Medium-bodied and mildly resinous. Carbonation is active and crisp. Super easy to drink for the style.

O: An incredibly approachable, easy-going American black ale. It is more simplistic and straight-forward than many other examples of the style, but this actually works in its favor. More balanced and with a better integration of flavors than many ales of this style, I recommend this one highly to fans of hoppy dark ales.

A- Looks exactly like a Porter in the glass. Darkest possible reddish brown with a quickly dissipating 1/2 finger head. Good lacing.
S- Weird... Prunes and booze with a touch of chocolate and spicy hops. Notes of tropical fruit when you really dig in. How can I be smelling so much alcohol? Its just over 5%.
T- Dark fruits up front with a touch of caramel, followed by spicy hops, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and some citrus. Pine and char on the finish.
M- Thin with slight carbonation. Drying.
O- Rye Hatter is one of my favorite beers, so I was expecting much more from this one. When my wife asked me how it was, I paused for a minute and finally answered, "It's confused." I'll stick with Rye.
