A - Dark brown with a thin off-white head that reduces to a fingernail. Scattered, but minimal lacing left behind.

S - Caramel and malt dominate the smell. Actually somewhat unpleasant, if you ask me. But I base very little off of the smell of a beer anyway.

T - Extremely malty, with some chocolate notes, a nutty flavor in the middle, and caramel, maybe with a hint of molasses as well. Love the heavy malt presence on this one though.

M - Very smooth and moderately thick. Velvety in a sense. Low to moderate carbonation. Goes down great, with a hint of creaminess on the back.

O - I was very impressed with this offering by New Holland. I'm partial to porters, stouts, and browns. Smuttynose Old Dog Brown is the best American Brown made in my opinion, but this isn't all that far behind. Could definitely see looking for this one in the future.

Bottle poured into a pint glass

A: brown... Obviously. Pours a nice tan head with lacing that slowly crawls down the side of the glass. Tough to make a better looking brown ale

S: dry roasted chocolate, smoke,

T: very pleasant smokiness lots of chocolate very slightly toasted bready and earthy

M: only nitpicking flaw it's a little thin. But nice but of spiciness on the finish

O: definitely my favorite winter seasonal so far. Fits perfectly with the season and as far as brown ales go - this can't be beat. Vastly underrated. Resembles a porter without as much roasted malts. New holland killed it with this one.

A- Pours a deep, dark brown. Creamiest 1 finger head I have ever seen AND it lasted all the way to the bottom of the glass. It looked like warm whipped cream on top of a cappuccino. Awesome trailing and lacing.

S- Chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, and little roastiness.

T- Big, rich chocolate up front. Reminds me of cocoa. Behind that, there's some caramel, a touch of roasted malt and coffee. Its pretty crazy how much chocolate is in there.

M- Medium body with nice carbonation. Creamy on the tongue with a subtle roasty aftertaste.

O- I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. I'm still a bit confused, in a good way, how this beer was put together. It was like a brown ale meets a chocolate shake. What I'll remember most is the incredible creamy head and the decadent cocoa in the flavor. I would definitely have this again.

Update: Grains used are 2 row, wheat, rye, munich, and chocolate. Hops used are Brewers Gold and Nugget

Poured into a standard pint a medium to dark brown with a weel defined half finger head that held well,aromas I picked up were some light brown sugar and a tinge of roast.Flavors started out with a bit of dark fruit and brown sugar but a sour note came out of nowhere and hijacked the palate,really an unpleasant finish to a nice start.I always hope to really like beer from the breweries I came to enjoy as a craft beer novice,most of wich are from Michigan,but this just wasnt that great.

Pours a deep brown, oak color with a head that is whiter than you may expect. Head retained for a short time and little lacing was left on the glass. This beer smells very nutty, woody, and grainy, with slight hints of toasted malts and maybe even a bit of cocoa beans. It has a very "warm" smell and is quite powerful on the nose. The taste is very nutty, earthy and grainy with a very mild bitter finish. Medium-thin bodied with a slick mouth feel, leaving a bit of a wet finish. Not much carbonation in this one.

Pretty good brown ale here, sure to compliment a cold winter day very nicely.

This is better than expected. I drank an Imperial Stout before this and it holds up in the flavor department!

A- Deep dark brown with one inch of orangey tanned leather colored head.

S- A harsh ash character with a lot of fruity sweetness as well. Seems like a harsh porter, not what I was expecting.

T- The harshness of the nose is much more refrained into a moderate smokey and roast ash flavor that blends with a chocolaty caramel character that's nice. It's a lot like a cross between a porter and an English brown ale but there isn't the hoppiness I expect from an American brown.

M- Pretty thick and syrupy with medium to low carbonation, pretty on point for a porter but a bit heavy for this sweeter version. Still fills the mouth nicely and goes down easily.

D- This is a nice beer that might not adhere to a specific style well but is a nice in between of a more roasty porter and a sweeter brown.

To me this is an average American Brown ale. The taste hits all the right flavors. There is milk chocolate, cocoa, and light tree bark. The taste is somewhere between bitter and sweet as neither sensation really dominates. This is not a bad beer, but not one I would seek out again either.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Dark reddish-brown with nice light tan cap and some minor lacing lines.

Smell: Pretty sweet, with lots of caramel and fruitiness (plum, raisins, cherry). Maybe a touch of rye, and dry spices from the hops.

Taste: Very sweet upfront, with brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit and cherry. Toward the finish there is a light nuttiness and spiciness, which leads to a noble hop aftertaste. A medicinal aftertaste also develops after a while, which really starts to bother me.

Feel: Medium to full body with relatively low carbonation. Finish is a little dry despite the initial sweetness.

Overall: Pretty much as expected for a Brown Ale that has an elevated alcohol content. However, the finishing hops don't mesh with the malts and the medicinal aftertaste is a major issue. Decent.

Dark brown in color with minimal light penetrating it. A fingernail of beige head covers the majority of the top. Aroma is very sweet dark malt to the point of being cloying. The taste is overwhelmingly sweet dark malt with a light,smoky note. The mouth is thick and oily. Not a typical brown ale by any stretch of imagination.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish amber with a lot of bubbles. About one finger of light tan head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty and toasty malt forward aroma with hints of chocolate, toast, and nuts. Dark roasted barley malt with hints of chocolate, toasted bread, coffee, cream, caramel, toffee, nuts, smoke, and yeast. Also some hints of earthy hops and dark fruit. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty, toasty, and nicely creamy dark malt forward taste with notes of chocolate, nuts, and toast. Dark roasted barley malt with upfront notes of chocolate, toast, biscuit, coffee, cream, toffee, caramel, nuts, yeast, and a little smoke. Subtle hints of dark fruit. Also some light notes of earthy hops. A solid nutty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and very smooth with a somewhat drying finish.

Overall: A pretty nice toasty brown ale. Good roasty malt flavors with a smooth creamy body.

Another Michigan beer, let's see how this American Brown weighs in with my favorites. Pours a very nice velvet texture with a brown ruby highlighted huee with a big khaki tan head forming thick. Fine speckled lacing scattered sporadically. Aroma has a nice fruity roasted malt character going on, slightly nutty with some hints of dark chocolate. A touch of alcohol in both the nose and the palate. Flavor is a bit astringent with alcohol and dark roasted malts bring out a hint of raisin and mild dark chocolate notes. Finishes dry with some herbal hop finish, maybe a hint of pine. Mouthfeel is medium bodied moderate carbonation with a fittingly dry finish not overly sweet enough hops and alcohol to balance out the malt sweetness. Overall maybe one of the better beers out of their seasonals up in New Holland, I'm typically not crazy about their beers but this isn't half bad.

Had this on-tap at Pizzeria Paradiso in Washington DC.

Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer of bubbles on top leaving not very much in the lacing department.

Smells of lightly roasted malts, not quite as sweet as toasted malts but not as heavy as roasted malts in a stout/porter. There's also a hint of smokiness and buttery malts that make their way out from time to time.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though a bit less complex. Lightly roasted malts kick things off, then sweeten up as the malt flavor becomes a bit more buttery. Not much else happens, and there's a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's a bit on the thin side but still manages to go down pretty smoothly.

Drinkability is good. I could have more than one of these, but I'm not sure that I want to.

Overall this is right in the middle of the road with browns. There's nothing that really sticks out as above average, though in the same vein nothing sticks out as less than average. Worth a shot if you're into browns.

(Served in an American Pint glass)

A- This beer pours a dense brown body with a faint ray of brown light at the very base of the glass. There is a thin head that fades to patches soon after the first sip.

S- There is a soft metallic note that gives way to a nice dry roasted malt nose with some chocolate malt notes coming through as it warms. There is a watery quality to the finish.

T- The light carbonic acid note gives way to a pleasant roasted malt flavor and some chocolate malt notes followed by a crisp watery flavor in the finish. As the beer warms there are some nice coffee malt notes and a tartness that comes through at the beginning of each sip.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a fizzy finish and a light watery texture to it.

D- This beer has some nice clean dark malt flavors to it but it is a bit thin and taste a bit like a porter that was diluted with water. The tartness was a bit bold for the rest of the malt flavors and it would be nice to taste some other flavors besides the mineral watery notes.

Cabin fever pours a deep brown color that is almost too dark to see through. The head is fluffy brown, sticky and reminds of fine latte frothed milk. A real look of a beer.

The nose is thin but still malty. A touch of brown sugar and roasted grains. Very simple and nice.

The taste is a lot like the nose in that it's very simple. Roasted malts covered with brown sugar and a little cream. It's a smooth flavor and makes it easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is slick and creamy with a subtle carbonation. Cabin fever is a simple, easy drinking brew that you can stick with all night. It's nothing to slouch at but there are better browns out there. Well worth trying if you see it.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, deep, dark, almost opaque, mahogany color with a quarter of a finger of oatmeal-colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the entire top of the beer.

Aroma: Very roasty and toasty. Tons of roasted malt and freshly toasted bread. Nutty and slightly earthy with some notes of coffee, toffee, caramel and brown sugar. Some subtle hops notes too.

Taste: Very good. Tons of roasted malt and roasted nuts. Very nutty. Some good brown sugar-like sweetness to balance out the flavors. Reminds me some of Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale. Very good!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy and creamy as there is not much carbonation at all. With an ABV of 6.5%, there’s no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a very, very good brown ale. Great, roasty, nutty flavors balanced beautifully by some brown sugar-like sweetness. Definitely recommended.

I am not always a big fan of brown ales. This one was straight forward. Nothing to take it down or on the same token nothing to set it above.
Enjoyable, something I could see myself drinking slowly sitting next to a warm fireplace.

Occasion: celebrating Will's triumphant first violin performance...
Appearance: shines a dark ruby body with a thick, frothy brown head; promising effervescence...
Aroma: the label promises rye, roast and raisin, and I oddly detect those scents; the roasted element is particularly appreciated...
Taste: First tastes are of caramel and raisin, somewhat sweet and mellow...
Palate: medium bodied with a warming presence at the throat that elongates the aftertaste. A noticeably effected beginning at the teeth as well--one can "breath" this beer out, in a sense....
Overall: A decent abv (6.2%) makes this a useful as well as enjoyable brew; the label is befitting its proper setting for consumption. I am not a fan of raisins per se, but I can be persuaded by the roasted atmosphere of this profile. This is the only bottle I purchased--I built my own winter six at Shop-Rite--but I would revisit this at a later date.

New Holland- Cabin Fever

A- Light flat brown with a small filmy head. bubbleless cola.
S- Light dusty chocolate with a sweet corn syrupy molalles.
T- Sweet molasses, dusty chocolate, and charred malt. Earthy dry grass hops with a sweet malty brown sugar finish.
M- Very sweet and malty. Clean filtered with a light touch of alc.

Overall- Simple, clean, nothing complex.

Looks like a Coke after pouring: not much head, dark brown coloring.
Roasted malt aroma, not much else to it.
Flavor profile is more of one of a higher alcohol content than 6.25%. Raisin seemed most prominent to me, like I see in more extreme brews. More roasted malt flavor, some chocolate, just a touch of hop bitterness in the finish.
Nothing particularly sensational, glad I only got two to sample.

12 oz beer poured into a Founder pint glass

A Poured a dark amber almost copper color. Had about half a fingers worth of head that dissipated fast.

S The nose was mainly toasted malts with a slight hint of toffee

T Very toasty. Coffee bean notes faint caramel taste in the background. Was convinced that alcohol content to be a little higher.

M Moderate carbonation, slick over the tongue

D Drinkability was good, not really what I would expect from a Brown ale though. Very warming,

Pours an ice cream fudge borwn with white head encasment. Malty smell, brought aggressive with toasting. Some chocolate malt, brown sugar, caramel. Some hop and aggressive carbonation workws as offset. Very malty taste. Medium mouthfeel. Some astringency in finish. Altogether so-so.

This is a very appropriate brew for the weather! It's been in the teens and very windy. I'll run and bike outside down to about 25 degrees, but the last several days have been Cabin Fever weather for sure!

A - This is pretty dark for a brown ale... more porter-like in color really. It does show some nice chestnut-brown hues when held to the light. The head is a light tan, and stands at about two fingers for quite some time. The lace consists of massive sheets of foam that wash down the side of the glass without too much stickage. Good looking brew.

S - Hard water minerals, assorted whole nuts in the shell (like you would serve in a bowl with a metal nut-cracker utensil), root beer, and sassafras. Rustic.

T - Nutty, but much sweeter and more chocolaty than the nose suggests. Hershey's Dark Chocolate Syrup on top of Rocky Road ice cream. I mention rocky road since there is a big marshmallow flavor here too... the sweetness is almost a little overdone, but not so much that it detracts from my enjoyment of this one.

M - This one manages to be really syrupy and heavy without actually having a full body. It feels dextrin laden at first sip, but then more nutty and woody notes knock the sugar down a notch and help this beer finish a little cleaner.

D - With an ABV of 6.5%, this is sort of like an "imperial brown" if there is such a thing, and as such it's got some great things going for it. This is a bit too sugary-syrupy IMO, and would benefit from maybe a little less chocolate-and-sugar notes. The finish and lingering notes, however, are excellent and despite a not-so-drinkable sugary-ness this is still a great beer!

A - dark brown with reddish edges; a quarter of an inch of soft, dense, brown head that has decent retention

S - grainy and sweet at first, but then nutty, roasty, and big caramel aromas

T - big caramel maltiness, big nutty character, some stickiness, very faint graininess, a mildly bitter finish

M - medium bodied, a bit crisp, a tad light at times

This is a decent brown ale. It doesn't have anything that separates it from the crowd, but it is brewed to style and is easily drinkable. If you're looking for an unoffensive, solid brown ale, then this is it. If you're looking for something more, you should look elsewhere. I'm glad I tried it once, but I won't be seeking it out again.
