Another Michigan beer, let's see how this American Brown weighs in with my favorites. Pours a very nice velvet texture with a brown ruby highlighted huee with a big khaki tan head forming thick. Fine speckled lacing scattered sporadically. Aroma has a nice fruity roasted malt character going on, slightly nutty with some hints of dark chocolate. A touch of alcohol in both the nose and the palate. Flavor is a bit astringent with alcohol and dark roasted malts bring out a hint of raisin and mild dark chocolate notes. Finishes dry with some herbal hop finish, maybe a hint of pine. Mouthfeel is medium bodied moderate carbonation with a fittingly dry finish not overly sweet enough hops and alcohol to balance out the malt sweetness. Overall maybe one of the better beers out of their seasonals up in New Holland, I'm typically not crazy about their beers but this isn't half bad.

Bought a 12 FL. OZ. (355 ML) bottle of this & added it to my Mix-A-Six Pack @ Naked Vine in Chesterfield, MO for $9.99. Poured from the black/white labeled bottle w/ a cabin on it & the New Holland logo into a 16oz Snifter Glass. Does not have a freshness date.

Aroma- Good coffee and roast. Very average brown ale. Nothing big here.

Appearance- Pours a 1 finger head that dies quickly. Has a medium-dark colored body that is clear but tons of depth. Leaves no lacing behind.

Flavor- Starts sweet, malty and a bit of roast. Light hops in the background and a light-medium bitterness level. Easy.

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Medium Carbonation, Smooth, Malty finish and some coffee on the palate.

Overall Impression- Expected more from this beer but its a hit or miss from New Holland... I enjoyed the hell out of their Mad Hatter Series (Black, Rye, Double, etc.) but a very good brown ale here. Would not steer anyone from this one but I will be venturing out and enjoying many more Brown ales to come.

Dark brown with shades of a deep rich red around the edges of my SA Perfect Pint. Agressive pour leaves a two finger off white head that tops off above the rim of the glass. The head is very rich and creamy, to me one of the best components of this brew. The retention is also above average. It's clear and with a good amount of carbonation.
Intially there were some strong aromas pouring out of the glass but as the head settled the aromas were hard to bring back. I'm picking up roasted malts and caramel.
First tasting a bit of rye, which was pleasant. Not as strong as rye bread but still detectable. I also taste raisins and caramel sweetness which is nice following the roast and rye notes. There is a nice balance between the two.
The beer is medium bodied and very smooth with a nice crisp finish.
Overall this is a very tasty brown ale. There are lots of flavors and I really enjoy the smoothness of it as well. It pretty to look at but for me lacked in the aroma department. I would buy this again.

Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black. No light getting through, just some gentler hues around the edges. The head is barely present, but the few bubbles you can see are a very contrasting white.

Very malt forward, tons of malt with some caramel and bittersweet chocolate. Your first impression is cola. As the beer warms, the rye becomes more prevalent.

Roasted malt flavors fill the mouth, along with the caramel making you think 'cola' again. A slight smokey, woody hop note in the swallow.

Medium bodied with a creamy initial mouthfeel. Sweet early on before giving way to a smokey, slightly bitter, dryish finish.

I ended up liking this more than I thought I would after the look and smell. The sweetness ends just before becoming cloying, with the roasty notes and hops providing a good balance.

A - This beer pours a nice dark mahogany brown color. There is a nice 2-finger light tan head resting on top. The head has good retention, and it leaces some scattered lace behind on the glass.

S - The nose has a nice bit roasted malt and caramel. There are some nice aromas of chocolate, rye, and a little bit of hop character. Very appetizing nose.

T - The taste starts off with a good bit of roasted malt. There are some good flavors of caramel, chocolate, maybe some rye, and a really mild hop presemce. The finish leaves some lingering roasted malt and chocolate flavors behind on the palate.

M - This has a medium body and good carbonation. It goes down easy and has a nice smooth feel to it. There is some roasted bitterness and caramel sweetness that is nicely balanced. Also, there is a very mild hop bitterness.

O - This has good drinkability. The flavor is really nice, and I could easily have a few of these in a night. Overall, I think this is a really nie beer and a good representation of the style. I recommend trying this one out. I would buy it again.

A: The beer is a dark brown color and has nearly a full thumb width of tan head. There is light lacing, which is creamy looking.

S: Right off the bat I pick up some metallic scent. I get roasted coffee scent, and some chocolate...more sweet smelling like chocolate cookies, than a cocoa smell. The metallic scent dies down after a bit.

T: It tastes much better than it smells. I get more of that roasted grain flavor, and it's very mellow...not bitter or astringent at all. The flavors meld very well with each other. There's more notes of chocolate, and I pick up a very light resinous juniper flavor at the end...very light.

M: The mouthfeel is just right. It's nice and smooth, with just the right bite of carbonation. There is no bad flavors or feeling left in the mouth after drinking. It's very easy to drink.

O: Overall it's a bit better than average. I felt that the smell was lacking, and I've had a lot of other brown ales (American or not) that have more flavor. It still tastes very good. I would drink it again, but I probably wouldn't pick it as my "go to" for brown ales.

Growler fill from GBX. Dark mahogany, rich brown color with a small 1 finger off white/tan head. Spotty lacing at best. Very small on the nose with some carmel notes and a little nutty. Was wanting a bigger hit with the aroma. Taste was similar to the nose, but this is where it came up a little short. Does not have that complex brown malty, nutty taste I like in a ABA. It does go down smooth for 6+% ABV, but a little weak on the taste. Feel is okay for a brown. A bit of cream and some carbonation with a very small sting of hops on the tongue. Overall- Not a bad brown, but not spectacular. Like how smooth it is and the limited hops profile. Was wanting a bigger taste and more complexity. Wouldn't turn one down, but just okay for an ABA-

New Holland Cabin Fever Brown Ale
12 oz. bottle; $1.99 @ Joe Canal's, Egg Harbor Twp., NJ

A rough pour brings up a massive head of tan froth over a dark mahogany brown body. The head retention and lacing are pretty good.

In the nose it's gently cocoa-ish and chocolatey with a flicker of spiciness, and a subtle edge of roastiness.

The body is medium-light, yet it somehow appears a touch creamy across the palate (perhaps because I poured it so roughly and released a bit of the CO2).

The flavor is fuller than the nose suggests, and it's rich with caramel and notes of chocolate. At times it's more like soft cocoa or milk chocolate, but it can also show a touch of underlying roastiness that's more reminiscent of very dark chocolate. There's an edge of spiciness that may or may not be due to hops; and very little yeasty fruitiness except that it does have a minor bit of raisin or other dark, dried fruit to it. Its moderate bitterness leads to a lingering, dry and dusty cocoa-like finish with a bit of dark fruit skin.

Overall it's not a really complex beer, but it is rich. Worth trying.
