Charkoota Rye - Smoked Doppelbock Lager

Charkoota Rye is a Smoked Rye Dopplebock. Charkoota Rye's malty backbone is derived from a blend of rye and four other malts, including malted barley smoked over cherry wood by our very own brewers, John and Jeff.

Its smoke-forward body is balanced with tones of deep mollasses and caramel, with a crisp, clean lager finish.

A smoked rye doppelbock...hell yeah.Poured a a full deep amber with a large off white head that settled very slowly,just nice to llok at.Aromas are big in fruity malt with a tinge of sharpness I am guessing from the rye,the smoke is faint at first but some hardwood comes through as it warms.Flavors show of the light smoke the most,not much fruit and or sharpness, some molasses and brown sugar come into a lingering finsish,the mouthfeel is light to medium.Iam guessing its food friendly, but it just seems to be missing something.

On tap at the Park bar in Detroit. Pours a dark mahogany and woody-brown color, laced in deep, ruby red edges. The head is a darker shade of tan with a light ruby tint to it, showing decent retention and some wet legging. This beer looks pretty damn good.

So this is a smoked doppelbock? I guess I can see that. The aroma gives way to a plentiful amount of smoked malt - liquid smoke, mild charcoal, and a certain campfire-like woodiness. Smoked malt tends to be pretty damn potent, and can often engulf and shadow any other present aromas and/or tastes if used too liberally. In the aroma, however, I can still discern the "doppelbock" qualities of this one; sweet molasses is probably second-in-command behind the smoke. A light bit of salt, dark fruit, burnt caramel, and more wood bring up the rear.

The first sip opens up wit a blanket of liquid smoke that comes out strong, but quickly gives way to some of the other flavors lying beneath it. Heavy wood, molasses, deep prunes, and even a mild nuttiness. The more I drink, the more I realize how intact the smoke remains from start to finish, giving off mild hints of campfires, bacon, and smoked meat. Mild bitter twinge on the tail end, cutting through the sweetness from the malt, making for a surprisingly dry finish. Then again, maybe it's the rye that helps provide for the dry finish. I don't taste much rye in itself, but maybe it can be held accountable for that ending bitterness. Medium bodied, slick mouth feel, low carbonation.

Smoked beers are very hit and miss, mostly due to the finesse needed when dealing with smoked malt. This beer wasn't bad at all. I would have liked a little bit more flavor to pop - though the smoke wasn't "overdone", by the end of the beer, my palate was starting to get tired of it. Good in smaller doses, and still pretty tasty overall.

Appearance: ruby brownish in color, small head, clear

Smell: toasted malt and a touch of smoke

Taste: toasted malt, caramel, brown sugar, smoke in the middle, and touch of rye towards the end.

Mouthfeel: smooth, medium/light bodied, minimal carbonation, sweet

Drinkability: I like all of the different flavor combos in this unusually complex beer. The alcohol is well hidden. Most of the flavors are subtle and do not hit right away. This is a beer to savor and one I will look for again.

The beer pours a dark, brownish-red with a cream colored head. The aroma is smoky and smells somewhat like burnt plastic. The flavor is roasted malt, meaty BBQ smoke and some chocolate. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. An interesting doppelbock that I hope to try again.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter.

Pours a very dark brown/ruby slightly translucent with a very thin lacing and no head. Nose is so smoke with hints of bacon.

Taste is smooth and crisp... then bam! Smoked bacon all over your palate! Really cool beer and if you like bacon, you'll love it!

A- The dense brown body glows a slight brownish-red glow when held to the light. There is a thin tan head that fades to a ring quickly.
S- The full aroma of plastic band-aids dominates with some notes of dark brown malt coming through when the beer is warm
T- The taste of big band-aids has a hint of bacon without the sweetness to support it. There is a faint chocolate malt that comes through when my tongue gets used to the band-aid. The finish is watery with a roasted bitterness and faint chocolate note lingering after each sip.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no alcohol heat.
D- I like smoked beers that put some beer flavors with the smoke. This beer is all smoke and all band-aids with other flavors buried. It was tough to get through a full bottle.

2010 Vintage, poured on 5-4-11 into my DFH snifter. dark brown/black but transparent, practically no head and no visual carbonation. I think this one is past its prime but here I proceed...I will review again if I have the chance to get a fresh bottle in the future.

Smell- peaty smoke reminiscent of a smokey scotch. some sweet bready malts, some caramel flavors.

Taste- a woody front taste, followed by a smokey sweet flavor, finished by some bitterness.

Mouthfeel- this is really lacking carbonation.

Drinkability- although interesting, I don't see searching this out again.

A mighty fine smoked beer. Pours dark, with a moderate white head to complement it. Significant smoked aromas, the whole 9 yards of smoke. Above average mouthfeel comes a great with a rolling maltiness, a little rye, a complex array of smoked malt that keeps the interest. Vert drinkable.

22oz bottle, Bruery tulip, 2010 vintage, and a big 'ol thank you to Dunt for hitting a want.

The pour is quite still and yields up only the suggestion of bubbles, let alone head. The bubbles are predictable darker tan and flee to the edges, a few bold, big ones wander in the middle. The color is dark red with brown and has some of the purple mentioned by others.

Smoke is forward, combining with a salinity that instantly recalls Kalamata olives. Sweet wood smoke, maple, ash, brown sugar, cherry, and undeniably some cured pork suggestions.

Smoke and brown sugar are a great combination. I suppose I could have learned that from bacon, but I was raised a vegetarian. Overall it's sweet, but not too sweet, with dry wood through to ash smoothing and distracting. The base seems to be a good Doppelbock with cherry tones.

Syrupy with small, smooth, subtle carbonation. The lack of head isn't an accurate indicator of CO2. It really feels great on this beer.

I find this beer to be right up my alley. The sweetness and smoke play wonderfully off of each other without being overpowering for me. I'd love to have more.

Half-finger of orangey head dissipates into minimal lacing over an opaque dark brown body.

Nose is enigmatic, sweet, maybe pear-ish with some wood and some alcohol. This is an incredibly smoky beer, but it doesn't come through on the nose.

Now this is what I think of when I think smoked beer. It's incredibly malty, even peaty, with some well-done charred steak in for good measure. Somehow also tastes rich and creamy. Slight alcohol burn on the finish. It's intense though, more so than any German rauchbier I've tried.

Mouthfeel is nice and creamy, very fine-grain carbonation to break up the super-intense flavor.

This is a go-to for me and one of my favorites. This particular bottle doesn't live up to my memory, but I set the bar pretty high for it. It is indeed super-rich, so I'd recommend sharing this one unless you're super into smoke and malt.

Did the brewer hit his mark...YES. Do I love this beer....Not Really. Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a pint glass, Charkoota Rye is an amber-brown in the glass, with a thin, off-white head; almost a cola-like appearance. Nose is of sweet, dark, roasty malts; black licorice, molasses, smoked peat, burnt chocolate and coffee are all present. The taste is similar to the nose with the smoky characteristics coming to the forefront. The beer is dry but not terribly acrid with a very thin carbonation. The increased ABV increases the drying effect but doesn't seem quite as high as the 8.4% listed on the bottle. Overall, as drinkable for a beer as strongly flavored and high in alcohol as a beer like this can be.

Charkoota Rye is a cherry stained brown color. It's mostly clear and has a nice burgundy tint with backlighting. A modest off-white head covers the top. It doesn't quite rise to a finger deep and disappears very quickly. Lacing was very light. Not bad, but not great.

The nose is rather weak and uninspiring. It's simply not very aromatic. There's a bit of a light smoky scent that's noted throughout. It smells nice and malty. I was expecting it to have a spicy edge, but I'm not getting that. I'm hopeful that rye has a stronger impact on the flavor. Alcohol is blended well and isn't noticeable. Overall, it smells very average. Perhaps more strength would help.

The flavor is better than the nose suggests. It has a nice, sweet malty base. There is a slight sugary flavor. The smoked flavor is the driving force of the flavor. It complements the malts nicely. A slight spicy flavor is present from the rye. It's somewhat subtle, and frankly, doesn't work very well with the smoked flavor. They don't gel well together. It tastes a little yeasty on the tail. Alcohol never is much of a factor. It's mildly noticeable in flavor on the finish. It's above average, but a far cry from great.

Charkoota Rye has a light medium body. It's too light and never has a smooth or plush feel to it. Carbonation is very light. I wouldn't complain if a few more bubbles were present. Pretty average. Drinkability is rather average, as well. The flavor's alright, but doesn't do much for me. I'll probably finish the bomber, but I wouldn't pick up another.

New Holland is one brewery that's been hit and miss for me. Charkoota Rye belongs with the latter. The nose is weak, the flavor's jumbled and never comes together, and it's too thin. Despite all that, it's still not terrible beer. It's just not very good either. If you're big into smoke flavored beers, then this may be for you. Otherwise, take a pass.

Pouts a deep brown, almost black color with a thin tan head that retains OK. The aroma has a nice bacon scent upfront, along with some rye, dark fruits, caramel and licorice, soy sauce and a bit of alcohol. The taste has a more subdued smoke character than the aroma, along with some caramel and toffee sweetness, some fig and date, licorice, a rye sharpness and a little soy sauce. The mouthfeel is a little ligher than expected but no unpleasant, and drinkability is good for a high alcohol smoked beer. Pretty solid smoked beer here, nothing mind blowing but worth a purchase.

2010 Vintage pours an effervescent chestnut with a finger of tan head. Average lacing & some head retention

S: Oak & beechwood smoke, cherries

T: Follows the nose, dryness, some figs & raisins up front. Smoked flavors start to over power this as it warms, a touch cherry charms blowpop & pipe tobbacco as well. Finishes dry, oaky, smokey with more weird cherry notes

MF: Chewy, moderate carbonation

This was underwhelming, this brewery is very hit & miss. This one misses, a chore to finish

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into my beer mug.

A- Charkoota Rye pours a dark reddish brown with a very small off white head despite a fairly aggressive pour.
S- Honestly at first I was a bit turned off by the smell, but the more I adjusted to it, the better it became. There is burnt brown sugar, a charred smell, smoke and an earthy element in the aroma. Very intriguing, it reminds me of Rogue's Chipotle Ale without the chipotle.
T- Hmmm, very different. Charred and smoky flavor along with burnt brown sugar from the aroma. Tastes like funky bacon.
M- Medium to full bodied, thick and kind of chewy.
D- Pretty average, a bomber would be good to split during dinner.

I really wish I would have had the patience to save this until I had something good for dinner to pair it with. Pairing this one with any kind of homecooked comfort food seems like it would work nicely.

I tried this beer at a tasting and after one pour I realized that this in fact was the worst beer I have ever had. It lo oks promising and pours a nice thick black with a decent head but the taste is just awful. I don't like bacon amd that's all I could taste. I ended up not even finishing my taste because it turned my stomach. I live new holland but this is something I would not recommend to anyone.

- Smoked doppel bock lager.

A: Black show in the vessel with a thin frothy peanut shell colored head. A quick lapse of retention showed no rewarding lace coverage.

S: Smoky, smoldering campfire, charred wood, smoked jerky with some freshly scorched pine wood. Good level of awareness.

T: Freshy wet charred woodiness for flavor speaks first, very smooth. Smoked jerky, glazed burnt ham, burnt molassess sweetness rings through as well. Good level of smokiness, yet the grain base remains recognizable with a dry, cris, husky nature. Things round out with some roasted peanuts, smoked dark fruit skins, (plums) and some smoked cherrywood.

M: Full bodied, thick and chewy substance with an oily texture and a nice farewell of burnt charred woodiness.

O: Overall nice drinkability, good level of smokiness, smoothly balanced. Most smoked beers are conservative, this one leans more towards the aggressive side but finds the sweet spot and balance just right, worthy repeat.

Served in a New Holland high gravity glass @ Bad Apple.

This dark brew glints scarlet in the light. A very attractive tone, jewel like with a tight cap of khaki foam topping it off. Retention is pretty good too, lasting for the duration.

Aroma is smoky, peaty with a pronounced sterile gauze/band aid note. Not a fan. This carries over into the flavor too unfortunately. At room temperature, there's an underlying warm maltiness and light rye spiciness. Even carbonation and a full body. A sipper probably best paired with cured meats. Not the best use of smoked malt, hope they reformulate with less band-aid in the mix next batch.

pours dark dark amber brown with a 1/2 finger head that leaves no lacing

smell is very smokey (campfire) - and is all i can pick up on

taste is also very smokey - sweet carmel and dark friut malts - the after taste is chocolate and roasted malts

mouthfeel is a medium body beer with just enough carbonation that to give it a creamy finish

drinkability is good - i had no problems drinking the bomber but i would not want anymore then that in a night

A: Dark mahogany with chestnut highlights at the edges, and a warm & glowing garnet/ruby when held to light. Nice color. Bright and clear with a fair number of bubbles sedately rising to the small, light/medium tan head. The foam falls to a ring that stays, but does not deposit any lasting lace.

S: I can smell it from almost two feet away! Malty & sweet. Lots of dark malt goodness – melanoidans, toffee, molasses, dark fruits, and underlying dark bready / crusty richness. Touch of earthy rye spice. Just slightly more than a hint of pleasant smoke. Ghost hint of alcohol? Pungent, pleasant, & rich.

T: Very rich dark malts (but not roast) and quite sweet (any more, and/or without the smoke & rye, and the C word would be in play). Dark toffee, molasses, dark & crusty bread, lots of dark fruit – all sweet and malty and rich. Smoke is way more noticeable on the palate, but still not too powerful – just a wonderful 2nd chair player. As the malty sweetness tames a bit in the middle the smoke pushes through with a quick phenolic hit and then it spreads and layers in, and then stands out more strongly as it lingers in the finish. Earthy & spicy rye also emerges as the sweetness tames and continues to linger in the finish. Ghost hint of alcohol. A faint herbal hop hint comes out as it warms. Combination & interplay of malty & sweet & smoke is great. Burps bring to mind bacon or honey smoked ham – a funny accent to deep richness.

M: Not rich or syrupy, but it is a bigger bodied beer. Under-matched carbonation, just barely enough to stand up to the body & very finely textured. Soft, smooth, rich, and very creamy. Lots of chewy dextrins and sticky sugars. Finish stays a bit semi-sweet until the very, very end. Slight touch of alcohol warming.

D: Wow! 2010 vintage (double wow) – this ages/cellars super well. Looking at other reviews (and from my own experience with smoke beers), this must have been quite a bit more smokey when fresher. It still has plenty of smoke, but the focus is now more on the very rich and reasonably complex malts. Full of great flavors that transition around – dark, malty, sweety, smokey, spicy rye, and a great rich feel. This is a great treat.

poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a pint glass. 8.17% abv.

Appearance: Appropriate sized fizzy brown head, drops way too fast. Dark dark red body.

Smell: Less smoke than I was hoping for, but the smell is still mostly smoke. Mmm...smells porky.

Taste: First the malt sweetness. Than the porky smokiness. Smoke lingers on the tastebuds for a while and I get hints of chocolate in the aftertaste. Much more mellow and balanced than I was expecting.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color beer with a nice thick brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of smoked malt is quite intense with light caramelized notes also noticeable. Taste is dominated by a great malt base with loads of smoke notes with some caramelized notes with light molasses. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. This has to be one of the most smoked beer outside of the original German smoked beer.

A: A very dark red in the glass with a very nice tan head.

S: Big smoke flavor right off the bat. Sweet cherry wood, and bbq with a bit of malt in the finish.

T: Nice and smoky throughout. Some strong malts, but they are a covered up by the smoke. There is a lovely clean finish.

M: Fairly thick, the carbonation seems a little low, but I think it works with the style.

D: By far one of the best beers I have had with cherry smoked malt. Sometimes they become a little too cloying, but this one is strong, and beautiful. Well crafted, clean and delicious.

22 oz bottle split and poured into a Sierra Nevada Imperial Pint. 22 degrees Plato, 8.17% ABV, no date.

A - Poured a clear dark mahogany color with a low tan head. Good retention which eventually left a ring of foam and a layer.

S - A big hickory smoked nose with a tiny malt presence in the background. Almost 100% smoke aroma. Nothing else really comes through cause it's overpowered. Decent through, the smoke smells good. I just wish there was something to back it up.

T - More hickory smoke. A good malt backbone is present behind but almost indistinguishable from the smoke flavor. The smoke isn't overpowering the palate, its a good level, but it just dominates everything else besides a lingering sugary sweetness which is no surprise from New Holland.

M - Dry and smoky with a very sweet feel. Medium-bodied and plain. A light carbonation finish to it.

D - Not bad. The smoke flavor is actually at a really good level as it's flavorful and not overpowering the senses, it's just not matched in careful consideration by malts or rye. It's another sugary and fairly one-dimensional beer from New Holland. They suggest that it be paired with pork and I think that would be really good with this beer.

Poured out of the tap into a medium sized snifter at Meridian Pint DC.

An absolute almost jet black, midnight black body, very dark with a small tiny off tan head that is quite small and disappears slowly. As the drink finishes, the body gives off a wonderful nice red hue along the edges. Very nice looking.

First smell is a mild smokey sensation but completely taken over by a medicinal novocaine. After a little while there's some hints at meaty jerky salts, but the novocaine takes over and the smell is virtually numbing.

Taste at first brings what is expected on the nose, but there is a good bit of sweetness too. Chewing tobacco like properties but then again it gives way and is taken over by that medicinal novocaine sensation. Palate numbing with some milk chocolate on the finish, but after many sips all I can taste is medicine and a dental lab.

Knock off that medicinal bent on this and the drink will sing, but otherwise it has a glaring fault.
