Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.
A: Opaque black color with less than one finger of diminishing light beige foam head. Scant lacing remains on the glass.
S: Roast is moderately intense and unctuous, while bourbon is approachable, like a children's breakfast cereal. The smell becomes remarkably savory as the beer warms. Spirit is detectable, but not oppressively boozy.
T: Begins off-dry, with dark chocolate, vanilla, and oak. Acidity is strong into the boozy middle, where aromatic bourbon becomes overbearing at times. The finish is ashy and moderately bitter.
M: Thin to medium viscosity, acidic and warm on the palate, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This is a mediocre bourbon-treated stout, able to boast an appealing mid-range smell but unable to follow up with its other qualities. The flavor is beguiling for a couple or three beats until acidity surges and the playbook goes out the window. Textures struggle similarly, but without much in the way of an upside to offer counterpoint. Sometimes in artisanal beer you don't get what you paid for; and sometimes, as in the case of this relatively low-priced beer, you do.

Poured this one, dark as night and viscous, into my glass. Pretty good head for style actually, though it went down fairly quickly.
Smell is heavy with dark, bitter chocolate...bourbon...a bit sweet (vanilla?).
Taste has quite the vanilla component to it...much more than most beers in this style. Definitely the notes of dark chocolate as well....and obviously, some bourbon, though it's a bit muted and this one doesn't come across too boozy or full of bourbon as others. Drinks pretty well for its 10 percent...and of course, the sweet vanilla doesn't hurt. Only a small twinge of bitterness at the finish....but definitely more vanilla.
This bourbon stout is a bit different than others due to its somewhat lacking bourbon taste, but reliance on the vanilla flavors. I like it!
