12oz bottle, 2012 vintage. Served at cellar temperature. Got it at BEHNNIES!
Pours dark brown to black in the glass with red highlights under light (nice rooby tones, good clarity). Kind of light-looking for a big Imperial Stout. Three finger tan head that leaves lots of spotty lacing.
Aroma bourbon, oak, vanilla, butterscotch, toffee, caramel, a touch of coffee. Not much in the way of roast, chocolate, etc. Very good strength.
Flavor is bourbon up front, nice vanilla and oak notes, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, again like the aroma there isn’t much in the way of roasted malts, chocolate or even dark fruit like one usually finds in an Imperial Stout, however some roasted malts and chocolate do come out as it warms up to room temperature. Moderate enzymes. Fairly sweet, minimal bitterness, alcohol is smooth and well integrated.
Mouthswish is medium bodied, creamy, somewhat sticky, light to moderate carbonation.
Putting style to the side, this is a really good bourbon barrel aged beer. However, this is more like a barrel aged scotch ale or barleywine (ala Backwoods Bastard, Insanity, Angel’s Share, etc), than an Imperial Stout. Maybe somewhere between the two styles. Great for a bourbon fix, though!

A: Pours almost black with a small head that dissipates quickly. Looks pretty much like a bourbon barrel stout should look.
S: Chocolate, some coffee, maybe a bit of vanilla. Oddly, not much in the way of bourbon.
T: Just a bit of bourbon with more coffee and chocolate. Drinks very smoothly, even at 11 percent ABV.
M: Very good, but not great; smooth and silky with some alcohol sting late.
O: Very good representation of the style. It's less "bourbony" than many of the other beers in this genre, but drinking Dragon's Milk is a good experience overall.
