beer is black with ruby highlights. opaque. brown head. fair retention. fair lacing.

smells like vanilla. sherry. oak. caramel and toffee malts. some slight alcohol. some floral hop aroma too.

taste is very sweet upfront. flavors of vanilla and oak, roasted malts, coffee chocolate, toffee, caramel. some hop and roasted malts bitterness in the finish to try and take some of the edge off the sweetness of this beer, but it is still sweet throughout and lingering after the finish. flavor of alcohol grows and remains unmistakable.

full mouthfeel. soft carbonation. very wet/sweet.

this beer should definitely be aged. very good. very big. definitely a sipper/ dessert beer.

Poured from their 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Pours just a medium mocha colored cap, color of the beer is a translucent dark brown, garnet hilites at the sides of the glass.

Smell - Oooooh, definitely oak and bourbon, dark fruits and cherries, roasted grains.

Taste - The taste somewhat follows the nose. Starts with dark coffee and semi-sweet ripe dark fruits, cherries and vanilla with oak at the center of the tongue, cherries turn to amaretto and then oak at the back, then bourbon flavor (with touches of vanilla and oak) as you swallow. As soon as you finish the sip an alcohol warmth rises in the back of the throat. Nice flavors and transitions, not hot at all. The heat does increase with temp, and of course quantity.

Mouthfeel - Actually lite to medium mouthfeel, this is due mostly to the medium carb, which tingles and brightens the mouth. Very easy to drink. At 10% ABV I expected this to be a heavier, more mouthcoating beer, but it is not. The flavors are however bold and remain in the mouth after ths sip.

Overall - I've had other oak barrel aged beers in the past where the oak and bourbon flavors were overly aggressive, this beer is not that way at all, there is a nice balance here. Flavors are also complex and enjoyable. Definitely a nice night cap on a cool night.

A: It has a chocolaty brown appearance, but completely opaque. Only a thin strip of head remains on the top of the beer, which is an off-white cocoa color. Decent lacing, but nothing special.

S: It has a very strong alcohol scent to it. I pick up a definite oak-like smell to the beer, similar to bourbon. There is a sweet smell to the beer, like dark chocolate cake. That's the best way to put it...it smells like there's a cake in the oven.

T: It tastes really good. There's the oak that I expected, but not too bitter. It works well with the flavor of the beer, which has notes of dark coffee...espresso...some dark chocolate, and just a very rich roasted flavor in general. The only minus, is that I do pick up some alcohol flavor in the beer. It doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, but it nods its head every now and then.

M: It's a very clean beer, and it goes down smooth. It doesn't need to be sipped and is amazing. I can't believe this is a 10.0% beer...it leaves no alcohol burn and there is no unpleasantness!

O: Overall I'd say this is definitely a good beer. I felt that it was perfectly smooth, but it lacked a more "robust" flavor that I get from other American Stouts. It is a very good beer, and I would absolutely buy it again. This is more of a beer for the classic stout or porter lover, and not the fan of huge barleywines or strong bitter stouts. It tastes like a session beer, but certainly doesn't kick like one.

My first and (so far) only 5/5 beer. So I figured it would be a good one with which to start reviewing beer on this site.

Poured into a New Belgium snifter from a 12 fl. oz. bottle.

A - An opaque, deep dark brown that borders on pitch black. Very pleasant looking, creamy head, which disappears rather quickly but leaves a nice creamy surface.

S - Equal parts dark chocolate, malt and "typical" stout, I'd say. A pretty good indication of what's to come.

T - Dear god, this is magical! The strongest flavor is that of gloriously dark and bitter chocolate. I think I am getting a slight hint of coconut, as well, which fits in perfectly. The flavor from the bourbon barrel-aging gives this beer a very nice "woody," almost winey note, the malt mixes very well with the chocolate flavors. The finish slightly hints at both the bourbon and alcohol content, but the sweetness hides the ABV very well.

M - Just the right amount of carbonation, and a nice, full-bodied feel. Very satisfying!

O - I only started drinking stouts recently, but had I heard of this beer sooner, man I would have started much, much earlier! This is divine.

One bottle will last you quite a while, as it is best sipped slowly. I'd recommend drinking it slightly below room temperature. I enjoyed mine with a piece of buttered French bread, which was a fantastic combination.

At $17 for a 4-pack rather spendy, but without a doubt worth it. Best enjoyed on special occasions, and/or shared with a friend.

Wholeheartedly recommended.

12 oz. bottle, standard pint glass.

A - Opaque pitch black with a very thin head that dissipates into a foam collar quick.

S - a bit of winey aroma in the background, fronted by chocolate, oak, and a bit of vanilla.

T - about the same as the aroma. bright chocolate with some astringent oak, brown sugar, and vanilla.

M - Heavy and silky smooth with very fine carbonation.

overall - Deceptively drinkable for the 10% ABV. The booze is hidden really well. Quite enjoyable, but Be careful with this one!

was pumped for this one! poured a hershey's syrup color (and texture) with just a tiny head fading away instantly. smells like an imperial milk stout, sugary and really strong. flavor is woody, the oak aging is prominent in the beer, mellows everything out and helps account for the lack of carbonation. there is also a graham crackey breadyness to this beer, giving it a nice full body. complex and delicious this beer does not hide its strength at all, which is fine in this style. my first new holland brew but will be keen to find some others as this was a great sunday afternoon treat
