one of my fav BB stouts available as a year-round. creamy, chocolate, bourbon with vanilla blended very well.
tried 2014
and 2015 vintage
subtle difference, the alcohol is more hidden. smoother chocolate, more roasted malts coming out in the aged bottle.
gotta try if you haven't. lives up to the hype.
dynamic &complex full-bodied stout. yum. (343 characters)

Fantastic stout. Unlike other stouts I've had this one has some more complex flavoring and feel to it.
It has a chocolate taste, and a subtle vanilla undertone with bourbon flavors that bring down the bitterness of that chocolate taste and make for an enjoyable stout beer. (274 characters)

Been a long time coming for this beer. Here goes:

A: Splendid. Large head and a ton of lacing. Pours pitch black as well.

S: Very, very bourbony. I'd wager that this beer is one of the most alcoholic, bourbony beers that I've ever smelled. Tons of oak and vanilla. Good, but the overwhelmingness of the alcoholic bourbon masks the stout scent somewhat.

T: Very sweet and bourbony. Lots of oak and vanilla. Also a sufficient dark chocolate taste (more apparent in the taste than in the smell). Good.

F: Little light for 11.0 alcohol. Still good, though.

O: Good beer. Would have again. I still think Bourbon County is much better. (651 characters)

12oz bottle poured into my mouth.
1/2 way through this bad-boy. It's a lot smoother than I expected. Although, it does have a bite on the back end, but a very pleasant bite! The oak and vanilla notes keep lingering until the next drink! It's also not too strong on the bourbon taste, which is a plus for me. I like hints of it, not a "BAM, IN YOUR ASS" bourbon taste. Very solid stout in my book.I would recommend to any stout drinker! (436 characters)

Tried this out one night with my wife. Very surprised. First taste strong bourbon flavor. You can taste the bourbon through out and it really grows on you. Great beer to share after a good meal around the camp fire! (215 characters)

A: [4.00] Dense 1 finger of khaki head. The head recedes evenly but relatively quickly. The beer is jet black. Shifting the beer leaves nice arcs of lacing. The bottle lists the ABV at 11%. There is a date code that translates to 2/13/15.

S: [3.00] The primary scent is bourbon. Maybe hints of coffee and chocolate. The nose is not strong just subtle smells.

T: [2.75] The booze is there throughout - right from the front to the back. Strong assertive bourbon flavor up front. There is some chocolate on the finish and the aftertaste.

M: [3.00] The high alcohol impacts the mouthfeel. There is a tightness due to the alcohol on the tongue.

O: [3.00] This beer obviously has a great reputation and high expectations. They were not met. The alcohol just overwhelmed all of the other flavors. It was a big gong and the chocolate, vanilla, coffee were all little bells in the background. Also, the nose is extremly subdued for such a big beer. I would actually seek out several stouts and porters at 1/2 this ABV instead. (1,036 characters)

Surprisingly mild aroma for an IS. Smooth, non syrupy feel. Strong, bourbony taste. Vanilla, slight chocolaty, slight coffee aroma. Disappointingly non-coffee and non-chocolate taste. Good beer, solid 4.00-4.25. (211 characters)

Initially a chocolate taste with a little sting at the end. The barrel aging comes thru after a few sips. I'm not a stout drinker but I wanted to try something new. (166 characters)

This is a dark and beautiful stout - it's slightly sweet to taste with vanilla & wood. It's high alcohol content is a bit dangerous as it is a smooth drink (157 characters)

This on draft is so much better than bottles. It has an alcohol punch at the end that detracts a bit from the richness of the stout. But when I want a stout this is the one I drink. @11% it gets the job done quickly. Another barrel aged brew I tend to lean towards. (266 characters)

Smell is chocolate, oak, and whiskey. I like it already. Taste is creamy milk chocolate, hint of coffee. Surprisingly well balanced and mellow. I thought it was excellent (170 characters)

Had this on draft and really liked it. This is definitely a slow sipper - sweet, thick, notes of vanilla and bitter chocolate, tobacco and oak, boozy. Fantastic bitter chocolate smell. (184 characters)

STRONG whiskey flavors, somewhat unbalanced. It seems to me that they loaded the beer with whiskey just to get to an 11% ABV. This is a sipping beer for me. Does not go well with a meal in my opinion. (200 characters)

Appearance - 4/5
Pours a deep, dark, brown, with maybe a hint of red. A small amount of head.

Smell - 3.75/5
Vanilla, chocolate, roasty, alcohol

Taste - 3.75/5
Very sweet malts, oak, alcohol, vanilla, a bit of roastiness

Mouthfeel - 3.75/5
Medium bodied, light carbonation, a little syrupy, but not too much. In between creamy and crisp.

Overall - 3.75/5
I remember when I was still new to drinking craft beer and I had this for the first time, I was blown away by how good it was. Now revisting it a couple years later, it's not nearly as good as I once thought. But then there have been other beers which I used to not like which I now do. I guess tastes change. Anyway, with my present taste buds, I'd say this is a good beer, but there are tastier beers out there. Especially considering the price of this beer. Still, never a bad option. (846 characters)

This beer surprised me. I though that the price was too high but at the initial smell I realized there was something hiding in this bottle. After pouring I discovered a dark luxurious color was hiding behind the bottles glass. After pouring the beer the smell definitely was a little sweeter than before and the initial taste was smooth and flavorful (350 characters)

Appearance: dark brow, a little thin, and head fizzles to a ring in a few seconds

Aroma: fruity esters - rum, blackberry, cassis; toffee and caramel, vanilla; touch of oak; bubblegum; lot's going on, builds interest well

Taste & Mouthfeel: milk cream, vanilla, butterscotch and rum - lot's of deep, dark dried fruit flavours like you'd expect from a Belgian ale - would be interested to see their yeast choice, in fact, it's more in that style than a stout, the roast malt (in this case chocolate) flavours are light; dry finish, very long and with a bit of heat from alcohol, very nice; medium/light body with light carbonation

Overall: like dessert in a glass, a nice creamy pastry/custard - would pair great with a rich chocolate cake; better shared, sweetness can become cloying (785 characters)

Bourbon and ethanol smell. Taste is strong on the ethanol, with bourbon and vanilla notable. Feel is a definite strong point, thick and creamy. Comes off almost like (rice?) pudding. Overall really good, not too sweet for a milk stout, but the bourbon could have shined through a little more. (292 characters)

Notes from 2/24/15 Vintage 2014

A - 3 fingers of dense khaki head. Sold retention and excellent lacing. Solid black body with some reddish brown showing along the edges of the glass when held to the light. Head is cappuccino colored.

S - Nice, mellow notes of milk and 80% chocolate. Soft but rich bourbon notes. A little roasted coffee bean. Also some vanilla and a perception of brown sugar.

T - Follows the nose but more bitterness than I expected (like paper filtered brewed coffee bitter). The bourbon is subtle but there's little booziness too. Chocolate and molasses come through big in the start and finish. Too much booze in the middle as it warms.

M - Creamy. A little alcohol heat in the middle. Low carb and sticky finish.

O - Way better than I remembered when I had it fresh. Creamier and more balanced. Maybe my palate changed but this is significantly better with age. Looking forward to another one from the same 4 pack next year. (965 characters)

Highly overrated, I feel like the alcohol taste is not covered up at all, that's the taste that really stands out on this one, overpriced as well, not an imperial stout fan, but I've paid a lot less Jackie O's dark apparition, which was outstanding. (249 characters)

This stuff is strong and you probably aren't going to drink too many of them but they are fantastic. If I had one complaint about Dragons Milk it would be that there is (at least for me) a bitter alcohol aftertaste. (215 characters)

Perfectly balanced and very drinkable for an imperial. Alcohol is well masked by unsubtle tones of vanilla and cream. Just the right degree of bitterness and hints of oak. (172 characters)

New Holland hit a gold mine! Fresh malty smell, with a hint of bourbon. Nice pour with a darker thin lacing. Tastes like heaven. A bit thinner than most stouts. The bourbon oak flavor mixes in perfect, with a hint of vanilla. Smooth, clean finish. Bottoms up! (268 characters)

My go-to barrel aged stout. Bourbon tidal waves knock you on your ass and you let yourself get sucked in by the vanilla undertow, not caring if you drown in its boozy bliss. This is like the Black Sabbath of beers. (215 characters)
