Not quite black, but getting close. Clean and sharp. Minimal brown head.

Nose is lightly big stout smells (roasty, coffee, dark fruit, maybe some chocolate), with definitely some vanilla, oak and alcohol, but not much. Enjoyable flavour types, but a little underwhelming in general. There's a sweet fruit in there as well in addition to the dark fruits listed above. Can't put my nose on it. Was definitely stronger initially.

Medium thick but sticky, medium carbonation, and a heat to it that's clearly actually from the alcohol, but tastes almost more pepper heat (even though I know better). Flavours of sticky chocolate, some fruit, some coffee, and some definite barreling. Smoothe and dangerously drinkable for 10% even though you can feel every percentage of it. A classic in the genre. My impression has always been that it is to BA stouts essentially what SNPA is to APAs or Black Butte is to porters or Boston Lager is to American viennas. Maybe not the greatest within the style in this golden age of craft, but kind of the bedrock example that serves as a great intro for many.
When I lived in Missouri, I kept meaning to pick it up, but never did because it was always there and I wanted to explore limited/locals first. Much gratitude to @Bulldoza for including it as essentially an extra in his awesome BIF box of mostly Texas locals for the opportunity to correct my above mistake. Thanks Nick!

Cask pour. Completely different experience than drinking from the bottle. Had to initially chew through the frothy head to get to the beer. Excellent beer.

Appearance: very dark brown, almost black; small tan head, quickly dissipates; good lacing; expected for such a big beer

Smell: smells delicious; vanilla, oak dominate; smells bourbon-y, but could be due to the name

Taste: very sweet, malty, chocolate taste on start; good warming alcohol with roasted grains; oak tannins linger in the end; delicious

Mouthfeel: creamy, like silky milk chocolate

Remarks: may be my favorite US beer so far; excellent; I'll have to get this again.

L: Pours bright coffee black under a clingy, frothy tan foam collar. S: Winey malt aromas with traces of chocolate. T: Malty caramel chocolate flavors are enhanced by oaky vanilla and big alcohol flavors. Dark chocolate bitter finish. F: Creamy, chewy, medium carbonation. O: A potent, big alcohol beer loaded with flavor that is a treat to drink.

ALL "5's" across the board! Sampled last night on 6/18/15. Comes in a 4-pack at the local Hy-vee and contains right at 11% alcohol (ABV)! Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 12 ounce 'Empyrean Brewing Co.' snifter glass.

Brew pours super close to a pitch-black in color with about a 1/2-finger foamy beige head. Lots of 'ring-like' lacing is seen when sipped. Aroma is of roasted malts and cocoa powder for the most part. Bit more going on with the taste as there is a hint of dark fruit (cherries?) along with a hint of vanilla also. No 'boozy' taste either as you might think with the 11% alcohol! Nice finish but does have a very mild bitter finish that lasts about 2 secs. Close to full-bodied with perfect carbonation, which isn't much as most types of this style are. You aren't going to drink more than 2 of these in a sitting I'm thinking. ;) A fantastic brew and a 'must try'!

L: dark chocolate in a tall glass
S: chocolate with hints of cocoa
T- chocolate and cherries with cocoa and coffee hints, more robust flavor than your typical stout or porter
F- malty, bitter aftertaste
O- a local restaurant just got it on tap and I'll be having it again, went well with almond chicken salad. Not as good as Founders Breakfast Stout but still very drinkable. On a side note, I got home after drinking it and took a 2-hour nap, it damn near knocked me out. Double stouts tend to sap all of my energy.

This is my 500th rated beer, so I figured it deserved some words.
L- very dark, low head, but nice lacing that clings to the glass.
S- Pretty much bourbon, but some hint of coffee/chocolate.
T- Smooth start, astringent finish (but in a good way)
F- Creamy start, spikes finish, leaves your mouth suddenly like-- did I swallow, where did it go?
O- I would buy this again. Hi alcohol makes me save it for when I can afford the hit.

Pours a dark brown/black, little head.

Smells of chocolate covered dark cherries, rum, raisin, little bit boozy.

Tastes very raisin forward to me. A little sickly sweet taste going on. Some prune flavor. Lots of milk chocolate.

Mouth feel is big, thick, a little oily.

Overall, not a bad BA Stout. A little sweet for my tastes though.

Wow! This is a great beer. At first I thought it was a little to boozy, but after settling in on the bottle it was a nice warmth and flavor on the palate. I would put this Imperial stout at #3 on my list of best aged stouts.

A: Black, oily, deep dense tan head that recedes to thin sparse head. Few spots of lace.

S: Milk chocolate, kinda harsh oak, sweet cream.

T: Dark chocolate offset by some sweetness, oak. Rich cacao finish. Good progression as it warms. Surprisingly, no alcohol warmth.

M:Oily, thick. Prickly carbonation.

O: Can't believe this is year round. This beer is hedonistic; all the flavors are up front and unabashed. Supremely well made, available, and satisfying.

11% ABV and tastes it. The alcohol flavor is front and center and kills off anything that comes near. Fortunately the more the beer becomes room temp, the more the alcohol dies down and lets the roasted flavors come out.

Pours an opaque dark brown with khaki colored head. Roasted malt, chocolate, oak, bourbon, and vanilla sweetness on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with bourbon and cocoa.

A-Black, cola lively.
T-Roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon in the back end.
M-Light for a stout,thin, bit carbonated for a stout.
O-Good beer could improve, aged it a little bit longer and make it more creamy or smooth, don't mind the carbonation, feels more like porter!

Deep dark brown/ near black pour, creamy-looking tan head.
Smell is chocolate and bourbon barrel wood. No alcohol detected.
Taste is boozy, with loads of bourbon and a vanilla/ burnt licorice flavor.
Medium feel, smooth, slightly buttery. Dry finish.
Decent stout, looks and smells great, a bit much charry and burnt for my taste (I'd prefer sweeter).
Others may disagree, so I'd say give this a try if you see it and like double stouts.

Very tasty. Creamy mouthfeel. Slightly sweet. Lots of chocolate and nutty flavors. However, it probably wasn't the best choice of beer to be drinking while also eating a steak. I definitely need to try this beer again, with appropriate food.

This beer got me into craft beer and always delivers. It's better than 2008 Darklord. Take a sip when it's kinda cold and then let it warm up and your next taste will blast you in the face with all the flavors you want in an imperial stout.

Doesn't appear as thick and creamy as I'd hoped: black color with a light tan head.

Aroma is bourbon, figs, and caramel.

Taste is awesome! Butterscotch, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, oak, molasses, and bourbon.

Mouth feel is not as thick as I would like. But it's still not bad. Heavy side of medium with light carbonation.

I'm very glad I bought a 4 pack of this beer. Excellent and complex flavor and bourbon sticks out.

one of my fav BB stouts available as a year-round. creamy, chocolate, bourbon with vanilla blended very well.
tried 2014
and 2015 vintage
subtle difference, the alcohol is more hidden. smoother chocolate, more roasted malts coming out in the aged bottle.
gotta try if you haven't. lives up to the hype.
dynamic &complex full-bodied stout. yum.

Fantastic stout. Unlike other stouts I've had this one has some more complex flavoring and feel to it.
It has a chocolate taste, and a subtle vanilla undertone with bourbon flavors that bring down the bitterness of that chocolate taste and make for an enjoyable stout beer.

Been a long time coming for this beer. Here goes:

A: Splendid. Large head and a ton of lacing. Pours pitch black as well.

S: Very, very bourbony. I'd wager that this beer is one of the most alcoholic, bourbony beers that I've ever smelled. Tons of oak and vanilla. Good, but the overwhelmingness of the alcoholic bourbon masks the stout scent somewhat.

T: Very sweet and bourbony. Lots of oak and vanilla. Also a sufficient dark chocolate taste (more apparent in the taste than in the smell). Good.

F: Little light for 11.0 alcohol. Still good, though.

O: Good beer. Would have again. I still think Bourbon County is much better.

12oz bottle poured into my mouth.
1/2 way through this bad-boy. It's a lot smoother than I expected. Although, it does have a bite on the back end, but a very pleasant bite! The oak and vanilla notes keep lingering until the next drink! It's also not too strong on the bourbon taste, which is a plus for me. I like hints of it, not a "BAM, IN YOUR ASS" bourbon taste. Very solid stout in my book.I would recommend to any stout drinker!

Tried this out one night with my wife. Very surprised. First taste strong bourbon flavor. You can taste the bourbon through out and it really grows on you. Great beer to share after a good meal around the camp fire!

A: [4.00] Dense 1 finger of khaki head. The head recedes evenly but relatively quickly. The beer is jet black. Shifting the beer leaves nice arcs of lacing. The bottle lists the ABV at 11%. There is a date code that translates to 2/13/15.

S: [3.00] The primary scent is bourbon. Maybe hints of coffee and chocolate. The nose is not strong just subtle smells.

T: [2.75] The booze is there throughout - right from the front to the back. Strong assertive bourbon flavor up front. There is some chocolate on the finish and the aftertaste.

M: [3.00] The high alcohol impacts the mouthfeel. There is a tightness due to the alcohol on the tongue.

O: [3.00] This beer obviously has a great reputation and high expectations. They were not met. The alcohol just overwhelmed all of the other flavors. It was a big gong and the chocolate, vanilla, coffee were all little bells in the background. Also, the nose is extremly subdued for such a big beer. I would actually seek out several stouts and porters at 1/2 this ABV instead.
