Wow, it's much darker than I anticipated. I'm not sure why I thought it would be lighter hued, I just did. It's a dark ruby/garnet color with light hints of brown highlights. A mild-to-medium pour produces a finger of creamy tan foam, not quite one-finger high. It's light beige in color with a very slight pink-ish cast to it. This recedes to a surface covering layer that is almost an 1/8 of an inch thick and very creamy in appearance. The lacing is in nice strands but is somewhat slick.

The raspberries almost totally dominate the nose. They aren't 'in your face' bold, just nice and sweet smelling, with a hint of tartness. I get a small amount of chocolate malts.
Very remeniscent of chocolate covered raspberries actually, overall.

The raspberry notes seemed 'bright', in the nose, but come across as much 'darker' in the flavor. Lots of cocoa powder and some dark chocolate notes. Light hints of pear sweetness and a touch of plums. A nice level of oakiness covers it all, like a thin sheet. The finish is full of over-ripe fruit notes, and yet it drys out quite nicely.

This has an alomst full body to it. The carbonation level is in the medium range and feels almost like bottle conditioning. It doesn't mention being being bottle conditioned though, so I think that New Holland just did it right. Very smooth and nicely creamy. This one feels very nice in your mouth.

This is certainly not an 'everyday' kind of beer, but it is tasty and I could foresee it being enjoyed, quite regularly. I realise that alot of people dislike fruit beers, so this one probably isn't for everyone. I don't mind them at all, myself, though.
This is a unique, interesting and tasty beer. Well done, New Holland!

2011 vintage.

Hazy unfiltered brown/purple body. Interesting.

Aroma of tootsie rolls, cherry licorish and figs.

Taste: Very malty. black raspberry notes. Not as sweet as I thought. Tastes like an american strong ale with very light real raspberry added. Pear, apple suggestions. Juicy but still dry - like a dry cabernet. Oak flavor lends complexity. Big time prune in the end. Very complex flavor. Excellent.

Extremely drinkable. Complexity really makes this beer.

1 PINT 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a conical pint glass
2012 vintage

A - It pours light brown to dark amber in color. The head is very short lived and tan in color.

S - The smell is sweet and syrupy. The raspberries are noticeable. It smells like a sweet mess.

T - The taste isn't much better. The pear is more noticeable in the taste where it was lacking in the smell. It leaves a burnt caramel aftertaste.

M - Moderate and smooth.

O - The aftertaste makes this beer rough. The burnt component is not pleasant. The initial taste is not a whole lot better. It was probably a good idea to retire this beer. It was a nice idea, but ideas don't always make a good beer.
