Pale ale like in aroma, taste and feel. Medium body, crisp and clean. Pours amber with a white head. The aroma is malty sweet with caramel, bread and yeast. The flavor has a nice bite, yet is very smooth and refreshing. A little bit of pepper and a bitter finish. Nice one.

Farmhouse Hatter was pretty good, but nothing spectacular; here’s hoping the rye will be better.
Brewed sometime earlier this year (“Vintage 2012” on the back of the bottle).
A: Pale orange with a creamy, foamy head; impressively dense retention with fairly thick (yet sparse) lacing. The solid appearance of the head gives it a very full look.
S: Roasted barley and dark (not spicy) rye are the main event, coming in smooth with aromas of earthy caramel, light pumpernickel, cereal, and a nutty, carrot cake sweetness. The malts smell a bit old and flat, not pleasant like a good malt-forward IPA. It probably doesn’t help that the hops aren’t there, either, showing only a hint of lemony bite.
T: Thankfully, the palate has more hop tastes than the nose would suggest, which certainly helps the balance. Still, musty malt and mildly spicy rye flavors are the main event here, showing the same cereal, earthy sweetness, caramel, and mild pumpernickel. Prickly, dry pine and floral bitters from the hops lay right on top of that maltiness, lightening it up to a more drinkable, citrusy, peppery palate. Finishes flowery and dry.
M: Oily and chewy, with a bit of dry bite to it. Not a single thin element to this body.
O: Not as good as the Farmhouse Hatter, but still alright. With all these variations, I’d be happy to try the standard Hatter – there’s nothing like an original.

Pours a darker amber with a thick foamy white head, light carbonation. Hoppy smell with light citrus hints. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the flavor is a nice hoppy goodness and not at all overpowering. I find many ryes too strong, but this is quite delicious and drinkable.

Pours a clear & bright, almost luminescent, orange amber with impressive off-white head and lacing. Many small bubbles and high level of carbonation lead to an enjoyable mouthfeel.
Aroma is more barley malt-forward than I would have chosen, with emphasis on the caramelized sweetness. The flavour expands into some nice "c" hop citrus elements, with an underlying rye backbone in the finish.
A very nice Rye P.A. and one I'd drink again, but unlike "The Poet", I wouldn't travel to New Holland, MI to get more.

I picked up a bottle of New Holland's Rye P.A. Hatter yesterday for $5.99 at The Lager Mill. I am not a fan of Mad Hatter but I thought I would take a chance on the rye version so let's see how it goes. 2012 vintage, no visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 22oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.
A- I like the label on this beer, it's nicely done and it's better looking then Mad Hatter's label. It poured a nice darker orange color that looked a little brighter when held to the light and it had a slight copper tint to it. It had two and a half fingers worth of off white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and left a little lacing. This was a good looking beer, I really liked color of this beer.
S- The first thing I notice in the aroma is a good amount of rye that imparts some spice rye aromas followed by a light peppercorn like aroma. After that comes the hops which impart a grassy and grapefruit like aroma. Towards the end come come malts and a little more rye that imparts some bready, grainy, and slightly caramel like aroma. The aroma was good, but I wish the hops stuck out a little more to balance out the rye.
T- The taste is pretty similar to the aroma, but it seems to be a little more balanced, it starts off with a good amount of spicy rye that isn't overpowering and is followed by some slightly sweet malts that impart some bready, grainy, and caramel like flavors. Towards the end comes the hops which are earthy, grassy, and citrusy, with grapefruit rinds sticking out the most. On the finish it had a medium amount of bitterness with a spicy and hoppy aftertaste. This beer tasted good, the flavors were nicely balanced with none of them being overpowering.
M- Pretty smooth, slightly creamy, dry finish, on the thin side of being medium bodied, with a good amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel was pretty average, it was just to thin for the style.
Overall I thought this was an ok beer and an above average example of the style, it's not the best rye IPA, but it certainly isn't the worst. This beer had good drinkability, it was pretty smooth and the flavors held my attention, one bomber would be just the right amount. What I liked most about this beer was the appearance and taste, they were both good and the hi light of this beer. What I liked least about this beer was the mouthfeel, it was going in the right direction but when it got to the body it was just to thin, just like Mad Hatter. I don;t think I would buy this beer again, I can think of a couple of Rye IPA's that I would rather have, but I would still recommend giving it a try. All in all this beer was better then I expected, I don't like Mad Hatter so I didn't think I would like this one, but it wasn't bad, but it did suffer from the same thing that Mad Hatter had with a thin body that doesn't work well with this beer, but it was good enough to get people that don't like IPA's to drink it so I have to give it credit. This was a decent beer, but nothing too memorable, I might just have to check out the rest of the series to see if there's anymore surprises.

Bottle to Speigleau small tulip
Purchased for $4.99 at Binny's Naperville, IL
App- A dual colored orange with a deeper copper tinge on the inside. A good off white head formed and was pretty quick to recede. The lace doesnt keep but falls with an egg white froth. Nice density on the coloring.
Smell- When you 1st smell you get a lot of creamy Rye. As more notes develop its mostly the dry hopping matched with a thicker caramel hop citrus with lending itself to a pine after aroma.
Taste- A bit of an unbalanced profile with regards to the dry hopping. Makes this take on more prickly notes and drowning out the Rye. Much more pine and citrus rind take over. As in the nose, more caramel matched with a thick bitter note. Its good but feel the Rye needs to come out more.
Mouth- A lighter medium body with a medium prickly carbonation. Overall residual flavors from pine, resin and citrus rind keep it funky but again due to dry hopping and taking away from Rye creaminess.
Drink- Its flavorful but not what I consider a Rye beer. Small timid rye is unbalanced from the dry hopping and too much bitter. Needs to replace dry hopping with more Rye to update spice and creamy flavors.

A: Dark coppery-orange shows a good level of carbonation. A sturdy 1 finger oatmeal tinted head has a bit of sheen to it, is rocky and porous, and holds rather steady for a lengthy amount of time. End of drink covering doesn't leave much on the glass in terms of lacing.
S: Soft rye, soft citrus-pine comes with a low level of aroma.
T: Spicy rye, peppercorn, pine toasted bread crust with a dry caramel grain backing. Spicy, peppery caramel finish.
M: Good level of carbonation is detected on the tongue. Spicy peppery presence warms the inner cheeks. Light malt feel turns frothy on the hold leaving a bit of peppery fade behind and some alcohol warmth.
O: Ok drinkability, flavor shows flashes of peppery caramel spiciness, and a good amount of alcohol which unfortunately covers the rye contribution at times.

2012 Vintage. Poured a slightly hazy orange-ish color with an off white head. In the aroma, a fresh grapefruit like hops and a small rye presence. In the taste, dry notes of rye, mellow grapefruit like hops. A small hop bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry rye and small hop citrus in the aftertaste. Overall this was a very good beer and will search for more.

Nice fresh C's hops. At least initially minimal malt presentation and no sense of rye.
Attractive amber, slightly cloudy. Big full rich head.
Nice little spice to the flavor from the rye. Not overdone. Well balanced malt flavors with a pushing bitterness that near excess, but backs off just enough.
Moderate body and some fullness to the carbonation.
Drinks pretty easily. There is noting Wow about this, but it's a good basic beer.

22 oz bottle of 2012 vintage poured into a Duvel tulip.
A- even a delicate pour created a dense, deep khaki head of 2-1/2 fingers. this rested atop a clean copper body with loads of carbonation emanating from the nucleation site at the bottom of the glass. Retention was at 1-finger and left awesome sticky rings on the glass.
S- hoppy/rye goodness at the crack of the cap. Underlying sweet, malty goodness comes off as brown sugar and really brings a good balance. Rye is very distinct. It all comes together as organic and herbal.
T- much as aroma implies. Solid hops and rye work together, though the hopping kind of steals the show by just a touch. I'd like to see a bit more rye. Very dry finish is herbal/aspirin-like and seems a bit harsh.
M- moderate body evens out the heavy carbonation. Hops are dry and somewhat biting.
O- Founders Reds Rye is my benchmark for the style. While this falls a little short, it's still quite solid. $4.49 for the bottle is a pretty good buy. Cap says "lay.". A nap does sound good right now.
