Poured from 12oz brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. No obvious freshness date although 272 on bottle neck is probably a Julian date. 4-pack purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $7.99.
A: Dusky dark amber with 1-finger beige frothy head with good retention and a solid double-line of lace around the glass.
S: The aroma is light for a wet-hopped ale with more caramel malty sweetness and bready cracker than the hops component, which shows a little dankness and mintiness but not much else.
T: The flavor highlights more hop character than the aroma, but it's still subdued. The hops are slightly dank, with an herbal minty quality. The mid-range caramel maltiness is enjoyable but not enough to carry this beer.
M: Somewhat tacky and sticky but pretty smooth with low-medium carbonation and firm medium body.
O: Pretty disappointing for a harvest ale/wet-hopped beer -- just average. I expected more from New Holland.
