Sundog is a lighter fizzy red beer. Off-white head quickly vanishes with little trace; red-brown liquid. Roasty and malty as well as mildly sour. Not much in the way of hops. Or other flavors. Or complexity. Ends with roasty malt. A little disappointing.

Pours a deep rich copper with a rather thin white head,aromas are pretty basic for an amber some caramel malt and biscuit dough with a a light grassy hop note but its pretty faint.Flavors are on the malty sweet side but that was expected, caramel and toasted malt take hold and control this ale mainly with a nice dry earthy finish that makes this beer more enjoyable.Not a world beater of a beer basic but well made and food friendly,quite quaffable.

Pretty clear and clean amber/light copper color with a small white head that left nice lacing on the glass. This one smells like a fairly generic amber ale, with lots of malt, caramel, and a toasted biscuit backbone. Along the way, you may pick up very, very slight floral notes and hops, but it is very faint. Unfortunately, I'm picking up a kind of weird, off-putting smell; metallic, and even a little "sweaty". Not sure what the deal is there, but it really came through during the last half of the beer. However, it has a pretty nice flavor: caramel, biscuits, malts, maybe even a bit of toasted barley. Near the end, some ever-so-slight fruity hints popped out, but remained fairly sheltered. Just a tad of sweetness and an average amount of carbonation give a little itty-bitty bite on the back of the tongue as this one washes down. Fairly thin body all around.

Not bad, but not very good either. One of my least favorite brews from New Holland, I would most likely pass this beer up next time, only because there are probably better options available where this can be had.

Poured a clear and beautiful amber color with an off-white creamy head that started off rich, thick and foamy but then left quickly leaving a light covering with just a ring with large bubbles. Scents of fruitcup and pineapple. Taste is sweet but not overly so. Caramel and roasted malts. You definately can taste the hops but they are not too aggressive. Biscuit malt and fuggle hops for malty sweetness. Juicy finish with sweetness and hoppy taste left in your mouth. Nice beer for a hot day sitting in the sunshine... yum...

Appearance: amber in color, 3/4 inch head, hazy, moderate carbonation

Smell: rich toffee and caramel with toasted malt

Taste: sweet caramel, earthy hops in the middle, sweet toffee towards the end and meadow

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, moderate-high carbonation, sweet start with a bitter spike in the middle and a less bitter end

Overall: A nice sessionable treat, nice and malty but just enough hops to give it balance. Not the best amber I have ever had but a damn good one.

Dark orange in color. Head is a little light. Appears slightly hazy.

Smells like sweet grains. Has some fruit characteristics as well.

Some sweet melon like flavor in the beginning. Finish has a nice sweet grain flavor.

Has a heavy, thick feeling in the mouth. Overall very nice.

A pretty good beer. The more I drink it the more I like it. Has a smooth finish and tastes good.

Appearance: dark amber/molasses with gold hues, thick off white head, great clarity

Aroma: caramel, husky bread aroma, some nuttiness as well, overall a nice malt showcase

Taste: Tastes like toasted bread drizzled in caramel with a nutty/almondy glaze. Nice bitterness on the finish to curb the sweetness. A dry balanced and flavorful beer

Mouthfeel: lacking a little in body, but only slightly. Medium carbonation, medium body

Overall: Definitely a great amber ale that focuses much more on developing malt flavors than hop, but with enough bitterness on the finish to curb the sweetness.

Clear burnished bronze appearance, average head of some thickness but small height. Very minimal lacing on the pint glass. Aroma is decently neutral with some nuttiness to it. Lighter mouthfeel, carbonation comes in at about medium. Well-balanced, leaning toward a honey maltiness, especially on warming up a little. Still, there is a slightly smokey hop, almost a spicey sage presence, that blends pretty well with a sweetness that's more obvious upfront. A nice change front-to-back- that you don't necessarily expect from a simple Amber Ale. Pretty good and easy-drinking beer to me.

12 oz bottle poured a deep, red-amber with an oversized off-white head. I had to wait for the head to die down a bit before sampling this amber.

Aroma: the earthy Fuggle hops work great in the flavor but not so well for my nose.

Flavor: rich and malty; lightly sweet but turning mildly bitter by the aftertaste which also has a touch of hops. Approaches 8.

Feel: very smooth; near medium body; Medium, soft carbonation.

O: a wee bit more malt and hops than your average amber. Nicely done.

Pours a thin yet creamy white head over a deep copper body. Leaves sheets of lace all the way down the glass. A mixture of biscuit, caramel, malt and floral hops greet the nose. There’s a bit of citrus and spice in the aroma too--- it’s a fairly complex hop bouquet that the label leads me to believe is entirely derived from fuggles hops. The flavor is rich biscuit malt up front, tempered with a rich sweetness, slightly fruity and finishing with a crisp bitterness. Substantial citric and spicy hop flavors throughout. Smooth mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Slightly drying finish with lingering hop notes.

A solid amber ale. One of Michigan’s best ‘workhorse’ ales and one of my favorites of the many great local brews. Excellent as a session ale or everyday drinker. It never gets boring.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer has a hazy golden orange-copper body with a light tan creamy head that last and last. It has a nice slow gentle carbonation of tiny bubbles.

S- The smell of orange citrus hops and some green hops really make a nice soft aroma. A faint dry malt is lurking in the background.

T- The flavor of pale malt with some lightly toasted malts has a faint nugget taste to it. There is a citrus and spicy hop flavor that finishes the beer. As it warms the lightly toasted malt really has a biscuit malt flavor to it.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a slight creamy texture.

D- This beer has some soft malt and hop flavors with a slight nugget note to the malt. It's not really an off-flavor but the flavor just doesn't taste bold and vibrant.

The color is a mildly hazed copper. The tan head rests at about one finger in height and retains itself well. When it fades to a foam, it fades no further and leaves sturdy lacing well down the glass.
The aroma is a good balance of malts and hops, the hops bringing a light earthy and floral element to complement a light fruity sweetness along with a touch of caramel and toastiness. It's well-attenuated but mild.
From the reviews I expected this be be a little weak, at least as far as hops presence, but it's actually not. For an amber that's not an Imperial and not trying to be Nugget Nectar, this is what you should be looking for: good amount of flavor (not devastating, tongue-obliterating flavor) and substantial contributions from both the hops and malt ends for good balance. This beer's flavor is similar to its aroma with a bit more of a leafy flavor also coming out and grains strong underneath. The finish lingers nicely and is pretty dry.
The beer overall is quite dry for the balance, carrying the leafy edge into the mouthfeel as well. The body is medium with a moderate carbonation giving way to a good level of crispness and allowing for it to smooth out in each swallow.
This is a good example of the style.

New Holland- Sundog

A- Light copper brown with a small sticky white head. Small 1 ring lacing.
S- Sweet sugary malt with touches of grainy biscuit.
T- Sweet candy-like caramel malt with brown sugar and bits of licorice and earthy hops.
M- Sweet and slightly cloying with a dry finish.

Overall- Buttery and smooth. An easy drinker. Good session beer.

Copper color, with a finger's head leaving average lacing on the glass. Fairly malty aroma, a fair amount of resinous hops as well.
The flavor is pretty much sweet from the malt, not as much hop flavor as I would have thought. The hops try to come through in the finish, but fall a bit short of being able to balance the malt quite enough.
Still, a decent finish and manages to be just good enough to enjoy.

Appearance: Lighter amber color with a quickly disappearing head and not so much lacing.

Smell: Sweeter and toasted malt flavors with not much hops involved. Balanced but could use some more complexity.

Taste: Toasted malt backbone with lingering faint citrus and fruit.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a lighter feel and full carbonation.

Drinkability: Why does this remind me of Red Tulip so much? Is it the same exact thing? They seem identical, though I prefer the former a bit more. Solid and drinkable, but there are better out there.

Appearance: deep robust caramel brown color. Nice and sudsy head and bubbly lacing all around

Smell: sweet, caramel, and roasted malts. Touch of hops in there as well

Taste: toasted and malty, hints of toffee/caramel sweetness paired with a faint peppered hop bite. Pretty straight forward and balanced well

Mouthfeel: not the least bit dry or overly sweet. Slides down smooth and not to carbonated. Body is nice and well rounded. This beer has some class and is very drinkable. Nice beer to compliment a fall day and a good sipper in the summer. This is one of the better mainstay beers from New Holland.

Pours a sunset golden with a head of true noteworthiness. Appears as a marshmellows plopped into acid, as the central mass remains as a bouyant clump, surrounded by liquidfied foam. Oodles and oodles of stain on the side of the glass. This impressives, though not color-wise.

Nose full of cereal (though *malt* cereal) and white toast. And nothing else.
More cereal and toasty graininess on the buds. This is a complaint I had with with Palealooza, and it remains a complaint with this one. Here, there are also whispers of dry toffee. But not to the extent I'd like. It seems to need more depth, more sweetness, and less grain.
Rides outs with a minor Fuggles flourish of damp, burning leaves.

Light bodied and flat tasting. It's drinkable, sure. Just boring and lifeless.

With some alteration and bolstering, this could become a solid ESB-styled brew.
It's just not there right now.

Aroma: Malty Sweet with a gentle piney hop aroma. Has a phenolic aroma

Appearance: Deep golden with a reddish hue-ruby like. White head retention that falls.

Flavor: Malty flavor. Has a "band-aid-like" or medicinal flavor. Just like, literally, chewing on a band aid, nasty! Piney bitterness and is hard to pick up on any other flavors because the band aid flavor is masking them.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied Ale

Overall Impression: This beer is obviously infected some how, however, these guys are EXCELLENT BREWERS and would continue to purchase their beers.

Phenolics are more prominent as an off-aroma, but also are imparted in the flavor of beer. It is described as medicinal, band-aid-like, smoky, clove-like, and plastic-like. Except in certain styles where small amounts are appropriate, phenols are hugely unacceptable. There are many sources of contamination:

* Chlorophenols exist in municipal water supplies and residue from chlorine-based sanitizers. They can affect beer in parts-per-billion (ppb)! Avoidance of both should be given; find a substitute water supply and avoid chlorine-based sanitizers altogether.

* Phenols extracted from malt during the mash and sparge are polyphenols, also called tannins. They interact with proteins to form chill or permanent haze. If oxidized through hot-side aeration, they create oxidized fusel alcohols. Proper sparging, and avoidance of excessive sparging can reduce the phenolic production. Also, sparge water should be low in alkalinity, and not in excess of 167°F. Likewise, extract brewers should avoid boiling grains.

* Phenols are also derived from certain yeast strains that produce aromatic alcohols. Bavarian wheat beers produce acceptable levels of phenols by creating 4-vinyl guaiacol that results in a pleasing clovelike phenolic tone under the correct conditions. Careful selection of yeast can eliminate undesired affects.

* Wild yeast contamination can harbor within plastic-based equipment, such as polyethylene fermenters and plastic hoses. These materials as soft and permeable, hence difficult to clean. Wild yeasts such as S. diatatius produce minor wort phenols that impart medicinal off-flavors. Migration to glass and stainless replacements are the best solution. Also check for defective bottle caps.

* Smoky phenols are a byproduct of smoked malts, such as in Rauchbier, and Scotch ales. Low amounts are appropriate, but excess use of malt can be overbearing.

New Holland's Sundog Amber Ale offers a basic but pleasing ale that's well-balanced with a touch of sweet malt and notes of yeasty fruitiness. Its clear, deep amber body appears copperish in the glass beneath a creamy head of off-white froth that holds well and leaves sticky rings of lace. The nose is limited, offering just a bit of malt, but it's clean and welcoming. It's dextrinous in the mouth with a fine, moderate carbonation (@2.4 volumes CO2/ltr) that leaves it quite smooth. In the flavor, the just-slightly-caramelish and subtly toasty malt dominates upfront but is quickly backed by some spicy hop flavors and a firm bitterness that reigns it all in. It finishes with some lingering malt and a bit of the yeast fruitiness found in the nose, as well as more more spicy hop flavor and bitterness. It's really well done, and although this beer won't bowl anyone over, it could serve quite readily as a steady session ale. Very nice indeed!

Dark amber with nice frothy head that lingers and sheets nicely.
Nice sweet floral and bready nose.
Taste is rather unspectacular, but I'm not the biggest amber fan.
Creamy-to-dry (if that's possible) finish after a spritsy pull.
Easy to drink, but not what I would consider thirst quenching, nor does it have any complexity that draws you in to want more than a bottle if different bottles were available.
Edit-Drinking another one today, and I just don't like it. Taste is too strong with a pine/grasscuttings character.

Pulled out of a variety case. Poured a clear amber with a white head. Looking good. This drank a little more dry than most ambers I've had and coupled with the sharp, hoppy finish, this is a relatively bitter beer.. The malts have a mild, dry toffee and bread crust taste, while the hops have a pepper and orange peel character. Dry and leaning towards a pale ale, but worth a try.

Nice amber color. Came out with a thick beige head and held it. Carbonated as hell. Decent body, but had a dry, metallic, bitter aftertaste that killed it for me. As it warms up from 55°, the aftertaste is diminishing, a little. I am having a hard time finishing this one. My first beer of '05. Hope the year gets better.

Pours an effervescent amber with 3+ fingers of cream colored head. Very good head retention & lacing

S: Bready & malty notes, plus a touch of pear

T Woody & herbal hopa, faint musty grain, dryness, pears up front. leafy hops, apricots & woody hops as this warms. Finishes with a lot of dryness from woody hops, plus a touch of fruittyness

MF: Medium bodied with firm carbonation, starts thinning out as this warms, okay balance

A very run of the mill amber, glad I got this as part of mixed sixer

A: pours a carmel to orange hue with a thin tan head. It's quick to disappear and there is minimal lacing.
S: A pleasant carmel scent jumps out from the get go and is is persistant. There are some faint nutty notes as the label suggests and I can detect detect a bit of floral notes as well.
T: sweeter than expected and loaded with a malty presence throughout. Toward the back, the nuttiness does come through, as well as some slighty bitter notes, but what really stands out is amount of malt and carmel.
M: light to medium in body and likewise with carbonation. It's a tad thinner than I anticipated. A decent sweet finish.
O: not a bad brew and one you could session with. Perhaps a bit more balance is in order as its sweetness dominates, but an interesting take on an amber and one that is enjoyable.

Sundog Amber: Brownish colored beer with a very nice head and nice lacing. My notes indicate that this was, of all things, a tea flavored beer. Think liptons iced tea, and you’re getting warmer. This “beer” had a flat uninspiring taste, not much going on here. Not so good.
