Thanks to my sister-in-law who occasionally sends me beers from Michigan that I cannot get in Texas. The latest box included several New Holland and a sixer of Bell's Two Hearted.

Pours a deep dark black with reddish mahogany hues at the edge when held up to light. Dark brown head with excellent lace. The nose is bready, with a strong oatmeal scent and notes of dark fruit - cherry, plum. Earthy, but not herbal. The taste is good. Malty sweet, but not syrupy. Again, lots of bread and oats here. Dark cherry. Fig. Coffee. Really nice flavor. Mouthfeel is firm, almost chewy as the beer warms to room temperature.

This is a nice beer. Perhaps not my favorite stout on the market, but totally accessible and very drinkable. I'll revisit this in the future if given the chance.

Sampled on tap at Kraftwerk during their New Holland event on 2/5/11. Also listed as Poet Oak Aged.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a two finger frothy beige head that has very good retention, only slowly fading into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.

Sweet boozy aroma with lots of earthy oak and sweet whiskey character. Decent amount of vanilla/marshmalloe character mellowing out the liquor in the nose. There's also a good bit of roasted malt with hints of oatmeal, chocolate, toffee, coffee bean and burnt toast.

Medium bodied and well balanced with a prominent roasted malt presence that counters the sweet whiskey/spirit flavor. I was expecting this beer to be more of a whiskey bomb but there is a lot of roasted malt with hints of oatmeal, chocolate, burnt toast and coffee bean. The barrel aging is nice but not overpowering. Lots of whiskey flavor without being hot, smoothed out by subtle earthy oak and a mellow vanilla character. Slightly nutty with a dry finish that has some slight sweetness and warmth in the chest. There's also a grainy after taste that is a bit unpleasant ad hurts drinkability.
