Poured into a snifter.

2.5 A: Lightly hazed orange amber color. Less than half a finger of frothy off-white head than fell quickly and left no lacing. Lots of crap floating around.

3.5 S: Big hit of booze from the start. Caramel with apple and peach fruitiness. Bourbon isn't really strong, but there's enough for it to be a good complement to the brew. Leathery with oak.

3.5 T: Taste may even be boozier than the nose. Doesn't matter too much since it's still pretty tasty. This time toffee shows up with the caramel. Light fruits again. Leathery bourbon with peat and vanilla notes.

3.5 M: Heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy, but a bit too syruppy at the same time.

3.5 D: Not bad. Huge beer with big booze and lots of flavor.

A - Pours a dark burgundy amber with a thin cream colored head that dies down really fast and leaves a healthy thin cream/tan colored lacing.

S - Caramelized malt, vanilla, oak, bourbon, light graham cracker, and toffee.

T - Follows the nose: balanced throughout with oak, bourbon, caramelized toffee, and vanilla.

M - Thick, full bodied, sticky, silky on the tongue, and boozy effervescence up the pipe hole.

O - Big, enjoyable, one dimensional, and deserves to be sipped in a snifter at room temp.

Vintage 2011, 12.0% ABV

12oz bottle, poured into my New Holland High Gravity Series tulip, pours a rich, deep copper color with a thin ivory colored head. Aromas are sweet and rich with vanilla, oak, bourbon, and booze. Tastes are sweet with caramel, toffee, booze, earth, bourbon, raisin, vanilla, maple, cinnamon, cloyingly sweet at times but the bourbon helps to cut the sweet. Full bodied and syrupy, low carbonation, and hot alcohol, finishes boozy and peppery. Overall, I love the bourbon on this one. Although it's sweet, it's a nice sipper with the bourbon barrel aging throwing an additional element to the ale.

Bourbon Barrel Pligrams Dole

Pours a clear amber color with a bit of a red tint to it. There is an inch of white head that sits around for awhile. Pretty dense lacing.

The nose has caramel, figs, light bourbon, some sour apple, and a bit of vanilla.

The taste has much more bourbon to it than the nose. Candied sugar, caramel, some figs & raisins, butterscotch and a tad bit of toasted coconut. Nonexistant abv. Pretty damn tasty.

The mouthfeel is medium-heavy with a creamy feel that smooths into some light carbonation.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this brew. Great flavor profile along with a killer mouthfeel.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter. Pours a cloudy light red with a nice off white head. Smells of Bourbon, wheat, and candy, very sweet smell. Tastes of sweet syrupy smoked bourbon barrel with slight wheat aftertaste. Beer is very sticky, full body good carbonation for style. Overall, a very good beer.

2012 bottle poured into a pint glass

A- Nice deep amber color. No head to speak of...minimal carbonation.

S- Bourbon, bourbon and some more bourbon.

T- BIG bourbon. Get some vanilla and oak along with all of the malt.

M- Nice mouth feel. A little hot going down in the beginning.

O- Didn't really know what to expect when I picked this up. I like New Holland's brews and this was aged in bourbon barrels, so I couldn't pass it up. Priced about right for a barrel aged beer at 12%. Pleasantly surprised by this beer. Probably worth trying the Non-BBA version of this beer to see where it came from.

reviewed from notes taken 12/19/12.

poured into snifter glass.

vintage 2012.

Appearance: dark orange bodied beer with a small cap of white head. A little swirl bring the head back to life. Spotty lacing.

Smell: A nice mellow bourbon and oak note. Lots of vanilla. Has a bit of fruitiness and that distinct wheat malt smell.

Taste: Similiar to the nose. Really nice barrel notes. They are mellow and well integrated with this wheatwine. Vanilla and honey. Oak and bourbon. Brown sugar and dark fruits. You can still get the wheat malts and a touch of fruitiness and subtle earthy hop. Finishes with a little bit of sweetness.

Mouthfeel: full bodied beer with low almost moderate carbonation level. Not very boozy for a 12% beer. It got a little bit of a warming as you swallow, thats it. Its a pretty darn smooth drink.

Overall: I honestly disliked Pilgrims Dole, but the bourbon barrel makes it a much better beer! New Holland really exceeded my expectations with this brew. So balanced and mellow for a big beer. I normally dislike wheatwines, but I gladly make an exception for this beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter
2012

A- Very deep dark brown color. Not much of an off white head. Nice alcohol legs.

S- The first thing I get is a lot of bourbon and oak. There is also a slightly bitter and citrusy hop profile.

T- This beer is big on the bourbon. There is a bunch of vanilla at first followed up by rye and corn mash. A sweet beer and of course, very bourbon forward. The wheatwine aspect of this beer is drowned by the bourbon but not in a a bad way. It is well complimented by the aging and the wheat really gives the beer some extra feel and flavor. The bourbon and vanilla really make this beer.

M- Thick but not too heavy for 12%. Not a lot of alcohol taste but a little burn on the way down.

O- This is a great brewski. Not what I picture when I think of a Wheatwine but this is a fine bourbon barrel aged beer.

Appearance - Nice deep amber color with little head. Pours quite thick. Very thin ring of lace around glass.

Smell - Subtle syrupy malts. Lots of bourbon. Good amount of yeast; smells old in a good way. Maybe a hint of wheat and citrus at the end. Smells great!

T - Tastes like a mix between a smooth devil dancer and backwoods bastard. Definitely getting a good amount of bourbon but it's also quite sweet. Lots of malt, lots of alcohol... still so smooth. Aftertaste is figs and bourbon.

M - Syrupy and thick. Not that much carbonation (I'd like more). I feel like this beer would benefit from some more hoppiness.

O - I liked this beer. Quite syrupy and quite a lot of alcohol. I can't help but compare this to backwoods bastard (maybe cause I've had a few recently)... its just sweeter and has less bite.

Got this one in the 2012 Birthday BIF from UrbanCaver; thanks Cam! Never heard of this but sounds cool. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Cigar City snifter. 2011 vintage.

a - Pours a somewhat transparent dark amber color with hald an inch of off white head and low carbonation evident. Head lasts a few second and leaves no lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of caramel malts, bourbon, oak, toffee, sweet dark fruits, figs, toasted malts, and light alcohol. Really nice nose, a nice mix of caramel, fruit, and bourbon, though none are overpowering.

t - Tastes of caramel malts, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, oak, raisins, figs, sweet dark fruits, toasted malts, light alcohol, brown sugar, and some sweet maple syrup. Really nice, and better then the nose.

m - Medium to full body and low to moderate carbonation. Thick and creamy, and pretty smooth. Not hot at all considering it's 12.5% ABV (according to the bottle).

o - Overall I thought this was a really nice beer. The nose was a really nice mix of caramel, sweet dark fruits, and bourbon, while the taste incorporated some vanilla. Very nice beer I'd like to have again.

Poured from bottle into Hoppin Frog tulip. Today's date is 1/29/2014.

Appearance- Deep amber/very burnt orange when held up to a light. Brown while sitting on my desk. Half a finger of cream colored head that reduces by half and then just stays.

Smell- Fig, bourbon and vanilla in that order. Then I get prunes and sweet caramel in the back. I hope the taste is exactly like the smell.

Taste- Way more bourbon than in the nose. More spice too. I detect clove and orange zest. The bourbon is pleasant and not over-powering.

Mouthfeel- More carbonation than expected. Much hoppier too. Great coating all throughout mouth and throat.

Overall- Great beer! To be honest, I will be going back to the spot I got it and look for more. This is not quite a barrel-aged barleywine and not quite a barrel-aged wee-heavy, but it is amazing.
