Pours a dark black color. 1/2 inch head of a rich tan color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of roasted malt, sweet malt, and oats. Fits the style of an Oatmeal Stout. Mouth feel is thick and smooth with a high carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malts up front, then some slight alcohol flavors come through, sweet malt near the finish along with some very slight hops, the finish is again some good roasted malt. Very easy to drink (a little less thick than I'm used to in a good stout, but still very easy to drink). Overall, a good beer with strong malt characteristics that is definitely worth a try.

The look and smell of The Poet are just average, but the taste and mouthfeel save the day. Nice hints of chocolate, roastiness, and char on the taste, with a smooth and creamy, albeit a little thin, mouthfeel. Will gladly drink this again.

Poured fairly aggressively from a 12-oz can with an illegible date, purchased several months ago at the brewery, into a pint glass.

Look: Dark brown, with a large tan head that lingered a little while, leaving smooth, even lacing.

Nose: Mild and sweet, some oatmeal, some brown sugar.

Mouthfeel: Smooth from the oatmeal, and medium thick, plenty of carbonation.

Attack: The malt and dark roast come through here.

Finish: Bitterness from the dark roast.

Overall: This very drinkable ale is quite pleasant, and not overwhelming in any sense. If the Oatmeal Stout category were divided into English vs. American, I would think of this more as an English ale; i.e., not hop-heavy bitter. I'd be happy to buy and drink it again.

Pours a very dark brown with a medium caramel colored head that goes away quickly. Gives a sweet roasted oat smell. Has a watered down roasted malt taste.

It's cold outside and I thought this would be a good beer to try.... Velvety smooth and taste pretty good .... Not really my style so perhaps I'm not the best critic... But for this type of beer I give it a thumbs up and above average

12oz can served in a Samuel smith ale glass. Date stamp on bottom of can: 06/08/22 09:27.

Appearance: Very dark brown, with some light at the edges. Thick tan head with lots of persistent lacing.

Smell: Faint cocoa powder and a bit of roasted malt. More sweet than anything.

Taste: Definite chocolate note up front, with some notable malt sweetness. Roasted malt character shows up, along with some lingering char and herbal notes at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Very good thickness, with just right carbonation. A bit of a dry finish.

Overall / Drinkability: Easily drinkable, and definitely on the sweet side for an outmeal stout. I'd almost call it a sweet / milk stout, but it's not quite there. Definitely need to pair this with some pastry or dessert, although I think this would go well with a burger as well.

Poured into a cool beer snifter-thing from Target

LOOK: Coca-Cola brown/black, three finger tan head that quickly disappears, moderate lacing
SMELL: Espresso, Dark chocolate (like those high-cacao % ones that taste like chalk at Whole Foods), and malt.
TASTE: Moderate carbonation, sweet espresso opening, then milk chocolate, then an extra punch of sweetness and bitterness on the finish from it being beer and not a Lindt bar.
FEEL: Way lighter than expected for a stout, but not necessarily a bad thing if you look at it more like a session-y sort of thing. Is it Terrapin Wake-n-Bake? No, but it doesn’t need to be.
OVERALL: Not the greatest Stout-with-a-capital-S in the world by any means but a pretty solid drink without being too heavy.

Poured a very dark brown, big frothy tan head than did not stick around long, and spotty lacing. Coffee, malt a bit of cocoa fill the senses, a bit thin. Not bad.
