I had never heard of this beer before yesterday and on a trip to my local liquor store the manager handed me this beer and said 'trust me'

The beer pours black, but it has a slight ruby tint. It left a one finger beige head which dissipated into a white lace.

The smell of this beer took me by surprise. On the first whiff I got a nose full of wheat and bread notes, but upon further sniffing, slight Chocolate notes came about and bigger coffee notes, with a hint of something that resembles oatmeal (maybe caramel).

The taste of this beer is magnificent. Coffee is the boldest taste in this beer with a tinge of chocolate. On the front end, just as in the aroma, you can clearly taste a bread-like oatmeal blend and on the back end is when the Roasted Malts take over.

The mouthfeel is as smooth as any stout I have ever tasted. Its not watery nor is it over bearing and it has just enough carbonation to provide a refreshing crispness. It is slightly dry/bitter on the back end which I welcomed with open arms.

I could drink 'The Poet' all day; and I can say, with out a doubt, this is the only 'real' stout I can say this about.

I highly Recommend!

Love my stouts, especially oatmeal stocks. This poured as close to a jet black stout I normally enjoy. There still was a hint of brown which gave me the warm aroma of coffee and chocolate.

The head was small and dark. The first taste was on the small side with nice much of a big stout taste considering the oatmeal fame. The mouthful and finish were much nicer, so I needed to taste it again.

Each taste afterwards, I found more round and soft flavors coming out. Almost like the oatmeal was finally trying to push through.

Enjoyable beer, in the top of the oatmeal stouts I have had

Appearance - Opaque black color with a half inch medium-thick tan head that dissipates at a medium-slow rate.

Smell - Sweet roasted malt and earthy smoked wood hops followed by dark chocolate.

Taste - Sweet roasted malt and smokey wood followed by lightly bitter dark chocolate and very mild alcohol with a roasted malt and smokey wood finish.

Mouthfeel - Rich and creamy, very well balanced bitterness/sweetness, medium carbonation, and very mild alcohol feel

Overall - An amazing stout. Very well balanced in every way.
