BOTTLE: 12 fl oz brown glass. Generally appealing label art. Branded pry-off pressure cap.

Reviewed live as an oatmeal stout per the label. Expectations are above average given the brewery and style. Served cold into a Samuel Smith's conical pint glass at high altitude in Castle Rock, CO.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 3 fingers wide. Khaki colour. Nice creaminess, thickness, and fullness. Frothiness is wanting. Retention is good - about 6-7 minutes. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Opaque brown-black; by no means a solid black. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Overall, it's a pretty typical looking oatmeal stout. Has no stand-out characteristics.

AROMA: Chocolate, cream, dark malts, caramel, and oats (but fortunately no accompanying starchiness). Unfortunately, no roasted barley is present. Neither too sweet nor too bitter, but there does seem to be something slightly off about the balance...

No hop profile, yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

Overall, it's a pleasant albeit contained aroma of below average intensity.

TASTE: Chocolate malts and dark malts provide the simple foundation for this plain oatmeal stout, with oats filling out the body and some additional chocolate lending it a bit of interesting character - something of which it is in dire need of more. There's a kiss of lactose sugar. This comes off plain, simple, and perhaps even boring, with below average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. The balance isn't quite dialed in, and there isn't much here in terms of subtlety or nuance. It's just a mundane oatmeal stout. I do like the creaminess, but it just isn't that evocative or interesting.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes come through.

Don't expect any rich chocolate, evocative coffee, vanilla, etc. It's a very basic build for an oatmeal stout.

TEXTURE: Creamy, smooth, wet, medium-bodied, slightly overcarbonated, aptly thick, and unrefreshing. This texture gets the job done - suiting the taste alright - but never really complements the taste or elevates the beer. Overall presence on the palate is decent.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, rough, scratchy, or harsh.

OVERALL: Drinkable. It's an oatmeal stout, but offers no ornamentation. It checks the boxes of what's required for the style, but has no stand-out characteristics. A disappointingly mediocre brew from New Holland that is nice for its price and will scratch your oatmeal stout itch, but will fail to impress the discerning drinker. I might pick it up again, but it's not a paragon by any means.

Recently started to distribute into MA. I am always welcoming of affordable 12oz brews flooding my shelves; New Holland provides.

A- Pouring the 12oz bottle into a chalice reveals a black bodied Oatmeal Stout and a crown greater than two fingers. The head has a very thick foamy texture and great retention. A big ring and blanket coat the top of the beer and lacing is plentiful in the form of webs.

S- Packs good strength here as roast malts leap out of the glass. Dark chocolate, medium-heavy roast grain and coffee are joined by caramel, earthy hops, toffee and cereal notes. Slight red fruits come through but the malts are the main show.

T- For me the prevailing flavors are dark semi-bitter cocoa, moderately heavy roast barley, coffee and toasted oats. It is a dark one for sure. Other things that come to mind are charcoal, cherry/raisin dark fruits, earthy and pine hops, cookies, slight smoke and toffee/caramel with a light sweetness.

MF- Medium bodied but certainly enough to support the layers of blackened flavors presented. Carbonation is on the moderately high side and causes the brew to foam up with a somewhat creamy consistency. Oats are silky. Dark bitter finish.

The aroma on this brew had me right away. Deep and complex roastiness with a mostly clean yeast profile underneath. Dark cocoa powder, roast grains and oats combine favorably and I am left craving oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
