The Poet is obviously in touch with its 'dark side'. Though not entirely opaque, this blackish beer comes close enough (and could pass if not my ultra-bright desk lamp). I'd love nothing more than to make an easy (and corny) beret pun, but, alas, foam resides on the outsides only.

Despite an easily appreciated amount of roast, the nose maintains a lot of fresh barley and raw grain characteristics. There's also a cast of dark fruit esters that sit snugly alongside the overall semi-dark, "fluffy" chocolate profile of the beer. Fairly mellow, but with still some attitude.

Trace elements of creamed coffee and chocolate truffle prevent this from tasting too one-dimensional but, by and large, unless you like you're breakfast cereal well-done, this won't appeal to you. That straightforward 'oat-y' maltiness is a little light and delicate for my tastes.

The Poet isn't overly rich, despite being substantial. It lacks the coffee-ish, dessert-like flavours of other similarly rated beers in the category (Rogue's Shakespeare or St. Ambroise's stouts for instance). I need more character, especially on the finish; this is a little too polite and ordered.

The Poet is nothing to write prose about. It's a solid and serviceable oatmeal stout that neither under- nor over-delivers. More than just your run-of-the-mill stout but not quite a full-blooded, over-the-top offering either, this occupies, for me anyhow, a kind of take-it-or-leave-it middle ground. I liked it enough to buy one six pack but not enough to buy another.

The Poet pours a black color, with a nice large lacing tan head. There is a strong sweet aroma, good hints of roasted malt. The taste has a nice big roasted malt flavor, with big hints of sweetens. Nice flavors, but a bit on the watery side. Overall very flavorful, but a bit watery.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.
Beer is a deep, dark brown with a tan head that quickly dissipates and leaves some lingering lacing down the glass.
A strong roast aroma with hits of chocolate and coffee.
The taste is very nice, smooth and roasty with sweet chocolate and some coffee notes and a hint of dark fruit.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy and luscious.
Overall, one of the better oatmeal stouts I've tatsed.
